Kidney (or renal) disease is very common in dogs and cats, and it may be reversible or permanent based on underlying causes. The disease could be a result of age-related changes to the kidneys, acute injury or toxin ingestion, congenital defects present from birth, or in rare cases, a side effect of some medications. To prevent kidney disease or slow its progression, it's vital to stay regular with wellness visits so that together, we can monitor renal levels with blood work and urinalysis and catch any changes ASAP.

"If I had to sum up the staff at PetCure Oncology in a few words, it would be that they are a supportive, caring, and professional family! They were there for Duffy & myself every step of the way, and in every way you could imagine. Duffy was diagnosed with a SubQ Mast cell tumor of the neck/chest, which literally popped-up overnight in April 2024. The tumor was surgically removed in May, although some could not be removed. So after he recovered, we met with PetCure Oncology doctors, who did further tests and developed a plan for treatment. So in June Duffy had 3 consecutive SRT treatments, to radiate any remaining mast cells. It was quite a whirlwind of decisions and treatments, and I couldn’t have gotten through any of it without the support, guidance and caring nature of the entire staff! They were absolutely amazing, and treated Duffy with all the compassion he (and I) needed.

We are now approaching his first follow-up exam, and I’m happy to say Duffy is doing excellent! So far no side effects, and he’s eating better and has that little spring back in his step. At 10 years old he is once again his perky self... My family and I look forward to every happy and healthy day in Duffy’s life, and much quality time! We also pray it will be a much longer life at that!" - Debra M. and Duffy 🐾 on their experience with PetCure Oncology at Northstar VETS in Robbinsville, NJ

We get it: when your pet is itchy, you start to scratch, too! The good news is your pet doesn’t have to live with incessant itchiness. Learn to spot the signs, then book a visit so that together, we can discover the cause and explore options for long-lasting relief, like:

Cyptopoint®: an injectable therapy that provides 4 to 8 weeks of allergy relief with a single in-office dose. ¹ Plus, for a limited time, get $25 off when you buy 2 doses of Cytopoint. ²

Or Apoquel®: an oral medicine that can be given at home for fast relief of allergic itch.³

Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable may increase the chances of developing serious infections and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse. Consider the risks and benefits of treatment in dogs with a history of recurrence of these conditions. New neoplastic conditions (benign and malignant) were observed in clinical studies and postapproval. Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable have not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporines. Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. “We've been using Village Vet for several years now. First for our sweet guinea pig and now for our cat. They have been so wonderful from the start. Helping us through our guinea pig going over the rainbow bridge to getting our rescued kitten healthy and strong... It speaks volumes when my cat is adventurous and curious when she's here for her check-up. She was rolling around on the floor, letting everyone pick her up and hold her. At just over 2 years old, I love this place for her, from regular check-ups to boarding.” - Amy M. on their experience at Village Veterinary Medical Center, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner in Knoxville, TN

“Fantastic experience from start to finish. After having a rough time and recovery with her last cleaning (in another city) I’ve been terrified to put my 11 year old girl under anesthesia again. We went a few months past her one year mark and after a serious issue arose in her mouth a couple of weekends ago it was time to face that fear. They were able to get us in quickly, and take care of the issue same day. Her recovery has been a dream! She’s back to hard food after several extractions and a deep clean. Communication prior to, during and after her procedure was phenomenal. Every staff member was incredibly caring and sweet towards her AND towards me - a helicopter dog mom. I would recommend this location to anyone looking for pet dental care that leaves your pet healthier and happier! Can’t thank them enough for the level of care.” - Ariel M. and Mila 🐾 on their experience at The Pet Dental Clinic in Queen Creek, AZ

The best way to know your dog is at a healthy weight? Staying up-to-date on their routine wellness appointments!
Your vet will monitor your pet’s weight and will be able to provide their professional diagnosis. Between visits, here are some clear signs you can look for to get an idea of whether your dog is overweight:

✋ By Feel: You should be able to feel their ribs and there should not be a thick layer of fat covering these bones.
🔎 By Sight: The chest should be wider than the abdomen, and you'll notice a significant tuck-up from chest to stomach.
😴 Behavior: Overweight dogs may also walk a bit slower than before, take more naps than usual, and may pant on your daily walks.

"It’s hard to put all the words on here, I cannot say enough about Dr. Bloom and Dr. Matos. Our French bulldog needed to have a Myringotomy. I didn’t even know this existed until I watched my baby have right side facial paralysis. Dr. Bloom and Dr. Matos explained everything in great detail, so we knew what to expect for her healing process and they genuinely cared about educating us about everything with her breed and the procedure. Our baby girl has regained full function of her mouth/ears and we are almost fully healed in the eye/nose area. I highly recommend Bloom Animal Hospital and I will be forever grateful for the care they provided." - Monicka H. on their experience at Bloom Animal Hospital in Livonia, MI

A choking dog is a scary situation no one wants to encounter, and it can turn into a medical emergency quickly. Dogs are typically able to cough up bits of food or foreign material lodged in the throat, but it is possible for a dog to choke on an object or food. Understanding how to check for obstructions and perform the canine Heimlich maneuver can save your dog's life.

💾 Save this post for reference, and for a more thorough overview, ask your vet for a demonstration at your pet's next visit.

that a 2022 study found that 61% of U.S. cats are classified as overweight or obese*? Carrying excess weight can not only lead to health problems like diabetes and heart disease in cats, but it also effects their mental health and playfulness.

Between visits, here are some clear signs you can look for to get an idea of whether your cat is overweight:

✋ By Feel: If you feel your cat's rib cage, the padding on healthy cats will be about as thick as that on the back of your hand. If you can’t feel your cat's ribs at all, or if you can only feel them when pressing firmly, then they may be obese or overweight.

🔎 By Sight: Begin by looking down at your cat when they are standing. There should be a slight indentation above the hips resembling a waist (remember that this may be difficult if your cat has long hair). If the waist area bulges out instead, they may be overweight.

Save this diagram for easy reference, and if you think your cat may be over or underweight, learn more here: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/is-my-cat-overweight

Here's a fact all dog owners should know: It’s estimated that 1 out of every 4 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. There are several clues that might indicate your dog has cancer ― and the sooner you spot them, the sooner they can be addressed. “As in humans, cancer is best treated when detected early,” Dr. Julie Bulman-Fleming, Thrive Pet Healthcare’s National Specialty Director of Oncology and Medical Director of Veterinary Cancer Group, told HuffPost this week.

He was very informative, candid, and knowledgeable when assessing Kai Lani’s situation and possible surgery outcomes. He took the time to ensure that we understood the risks and potential outcomes prior to coming to KC so that we could make the best decision for our family. A study conducted by NSF.org ranked pet toys as the 7th germiest household item, just behind faucet handles! Pet toys are a source of coliform bacteria (including Staph bacteria), yeast and mold in many homes. Encourage everyone in your household to wash their hands after playing with household pets and especially before eating.

To Clean: Hard toys can be cleaned gently with hot soapy water, rinsed with fresh water, disinfected with a bleach solution of half a tablespoon of bleach in one gallon of water and thoroughly rinsed to remove any residue then allow to air dry. Soft toys can be washed with other laundry on the washer’s sanitizing cycle. Wash monthly or more often as needed. 🧼

Warning:️ this post is about p**p! 💩 If you’ve ever wondered why you’re asked to bring in a f***l sample as part of your pet’s annual wellness exam, the answer is to check for intestinal parasites.

There are a variety of parasites that thrive inside of otherwise healthy pets, so having them routinely tested is essential to their well-being. Your pet's p**p will be checked for evidence of hookworms, roundworms, giardia, and more. 🔬
These parasites can not only make pets uncomfortable and irritable but can also lead to many more serious issues if left untreated. Several parasites can even be transmitted to people, so by having your pet’s f***s examined, you are protecting humans in your household, too!

To learn more about what intestinal parasites we test for in f***l exams, visit:

06/17/2024

Check your pet for ticks every day, especially after they spend time outdoors. Run your fingers through your pet's fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps. If you find a tick, it’s important to act quickly and safely. You can either try to remove the tick yourself or take your dog to your nearest pet urgent care or an emergency pet hospital for help.

If you choose to remove the tick from your dog, follow the steps below:

1) Use tweezers (or a tick remover instrument like a Tick Key) to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, removing the whole head and body.
2) Pull the tick straight out with slow and steady pressure. (If the head of the tick is left in the skin, it can cause an infection and still transmit disease, so make sure the whole body is removed!)
3) Once the tick is removed, you can place it in a sealed container in case your vet wants to test it for diseases.
4) Clean the area of your dog’s skin with soap and water then apply a pet-safe antiseptic.
5) Contact us for advice on next steps. We may ask you to bring the tick in for testing.

06/12/2024

Many of the diseases that parasites cause can spread from your pet to you and your family, too. Pests like and can crawl or hitch a ride into your home on shoes, clothing, or even on the fur of another pet. Itchy yet? Let’s talk pests:

🕷️ Ticks 🕷️
Not only are ticks a threat to our pets, but an estimated 476K Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year.* They aren’t just a warm weather issue, either: contrary to popular belief, ticks don’t die in the winter and do not hibernate, either. If you or your pet spend time in grassy or wooded areas, get in the habit of spot-checking yourself and them for these small, spider-like creatures after every outing. If you find one, pull it off carefully and intact, then call us.

🐜 Fleas 🐜
These teeny-tiny jumping parasites aren’t just annoying for the itchy rashes they cause in pets and people. Studies have shown that the plague is once again on the rise and that fleas are one of the culprits. Fleas can multiply and jump from host to host alarmingly fast, so if you catch your pet itching more than usual, have them checked for fleas ASAP.
