Walk Your Dog Month is an annual observance celebrated in January to highlight the importance of regular exercise and outdoor activity for dogs. This month-long event encourages dog owners to make a commitment to walk their furry friends more often, providing numerous physical and mental benefits for both dogs and their owners. Like humans, dogs with arthritis may experience more severe symptoms as cold weather intensifies. Joint pain and stiffness can worsen, making it more painful during winter and more common to slip or fall. Here are a few things you can do to help sooth their pain and prevent an accident:

❄ Maintain a healthy weight - extra pounds add stress to joints and bones, increasing their likelihood for developing osteoarthritis.
❄ Use dog coats or sweaters to help keep their joints warm.
❄ Walk daily to ensure joints stay lubricated – short, easy strolls are best.
❄ Get them a cozy bed (or several!) designed for pets with arthritis.
❄ Use dog ramps, stairs, and a helpful lift when rising and laying down.

If you’re still concerned and want to explore more treatment options, contact your veterinarian to schedule a consultation.

Pet owners always do their best to keep their pets safe, but animals tend to explore the world with their mouths and can accidentally ingest poisonous substances. The ASPCA compiled a list of the top pet toxins with a few examples:

⚠ Over the counter medications: Ibuprofen, naproxen, cold medications, and herbal supplements
⚠ Prescription medications: ADHD medication, antidepressants, and heart medication
⚠ Food: Xylitol (artificial sweetener), grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and garlic
⚠ Veterinary products: Animal medications - especially ones with added flavor that could be mistaken for a treat
⚠ Household Items: Paint, glue, and cleaning products (even natural products)
⚠ Rodenticides: Another toxin that could be mistaken for a treat - never leave rodenticides out where your pet can find them
⚠ Insecticides: Ant bait, bug spray, and foggers
⚠ Indoor & Outdoor Plants: Autumn crocus, azalea, lilies, sago palms, tulips - to name a few
⚠ Garden Products: Fertilizers, herbicides, and soil enhancements

Be sure to take precautions around your home to ensure pet safety.

If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, don’t wait. Contact us immediately. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

National Pet Travel Safety Day serves as a reminder to keep your pet safe every time you travel with them. Whether it's a family vacation, a car ride to the park, or even to the vet, you want to make each and every trip a safe one! πŸš—βœˆ

- Keep your pet secure in the car. An unsecured pet can be a distraction for the driver which puts them, any passengers, and the pet in danger. Also, never let your pet ride in the bed of a pickup truck. This is illegal in some states and, regardless of the law, puts your pet at a high risk of injury. The best way to keep your pet secure in the car is by using a harness or putting them in a pet crate and keeping them buckled in.

- In addition to keeping them secure, avoid letting your pet ride in the passenger seat or in your lap. If the airbag deploys in an accident, it could severely injure your pet (or worse). Secured in the back seat is the safest place in the car for your pet.

- Keep them comfortable while traveling with a spacious crate. As a rule of thumb, your pet should be able to stand up, sit down, and turn around inside the crate without touching the sides. You could also place a comfort item in the crate for them to travel with to help relieve some stress.

- Prepare a travel kit ahead of time with everything your pet might need while traveling and when you reach your destination. For example, your kit might include the following: food, water, bowls, medications, a leash, waste bags, a scooper, a litter box, and extra litter.

This is a reminder that both dogs and cats are known to ingest antifreeze (an unfortunately sweet tasting substance). This often occurs when antifreeze isn't stored properly or isn't placed out of paw's reach. Antifreeze can cause serious nervous system damage, kidney failure, and death. All it takes is less than a tablespoon!

If your pet has ingested antifreeze, there is an antidote! However, it is EXTREMELY important to get treatment for your pet as soon as possible. Contact us right away. You can also call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888)426-4435
