With a busy Hospital Schedule this week was
able to squeeze in a late morning hunt.
Left the house at 10am this morning whimping
to go early & to cold. Have to be careful with a
Compromised immune system.
Made the 15 min drive to one of my favorite late morning Turkey Woods. I was bungled up
Like the Abolminal Snowman & walked to a vantage point to make my 1st call. Nuttin Talkin !! Made a few more series of calls with
a box call, the woods was quiet as a church mouse other than the very cool wind making
the trees sing me a tune !!
Walked to another spot & called into a deep
what I call a canyon, actually hollow, nuttin honey !! It was 10:45am. Walked back to the
Truck, cased my gun, threw my fold out seat
& call bag in the back seat & headed to another area. Arriving at my 2nd stop, it was
11am, still have a hr or so hunt. This is my kind
of the so called "Runnin & Gunning" in my truck, lol Uncased my gun, got my shoulder
bag & seat & walked to a small knoll where I could call into a hollow, no flat ground in this part of WV, ya gotta be part Mountain Goat !!
1st call I made a Gobbler responded with a thundering gobble, it was 11:20. Walked to
a lil clearing & made another call with my fav
mouth call, he lit up & had moved up the ridge
some, guessing he was still 75 yds over the steep ridge. Time to set up. Made a few soft yelps & he was gobbling before I stopped calling closing the distance quickly. Time to
put my gun to the shoulder. Saw his full fan
appear bout 40 yrds over the crest of the ridge
He was now in full view long necking to find his mate. As I squeezed the trigger on my gun,
I was thinking about my boys, grandsons & friends who say I have a lucky Golden Horseshoe stuck in my Butt as the Big Gobbler
now lay motionless on the woodland floor, it was 11:40am !! He certainly was a big Mountain Gobbler, 22lbs, 10.5" Beard, 1 1/2"
& 1 7/16" Spurs ! Treasured Memories & a Gift from God !
When I started my sons & grandsons hunting
many moons ago, I would say to them, "there's an ole Gobbler out there with his claws wrapped around the limb for the last, it was on this day !!
