If you listen past the wind, you’ll hear Ruby happy and dreaming in the sun. ☀️

Yesterday, we received 14 round bales and the cows were very proud of themselves that they pushed one down the hill. I love it when visiting farmers say things like, “these are some dang happy cows”!

I wonder if that ever crosses their mind when they get back to their own cows? 🤔

I’m not an advocate for farmers feeding livestock a corn based diet.
Corn causes a cow’s stomach to be more acidic which increases the ecoli in their system and in the ground and on their hide and in your food. If there is an outbreak, it’s almost always traced back to too much feed.

I do give it to these knuckle heads a few times a winter when it’s super cold or we are expecting bad weather. They want to be in their shelters with full bellies not standing at the hay trough all day.

The other all got corn too but these four all insisted on eating the same exact kernel, as you can see in this photo. Give them a bag of corn and it gives crack-ed corn a new meaning. You can tell how skinny and underfed they are. 🤣

If we do get all of the snow they are predicting here in then they’ll get hot oatmeal for breakfast because that’s how we roll here at TCR. 🤪

Queen Elizabeth is in the middle taking a nap while the others are on duty…like the royalty she is! 👑

As if Massey Ferguson didn’t already light up my ♥️. I got to drive Scarlet in the dark. The reindeers needed feeding and now they are all tucked in for a warm (sunny and 60 in TN today!) winter’s night.

Akiva, look at me so I can take your picture.

Never ideal to have your biggest cow in the driveway, standing in the middle of what used to be hay for the littles. But, what can a girl do? 🤷🏼‍♀️
It happens!

Cows need water when it’s super cold just as much as when it’s super hot! Last year, we put in a drinking “fountain” from Drinking Post Automatic Waterers.

It works like a frost free hydrant. The cows touch it with their nose and the bowl fills with water and it is always clean, cold and fresh. The water they don’t drink falls down the pipe below the frost line to prevent freezing.

Next spring, we hope to have enough money to put one in for Sanjay, Little and the calves. 💦

This wasn't the first time that I didn't make the traditional rescue choice and I doubt it'll be the last.

It was important to me that Frankie came to the farm with his momma despite there being nothing wrong with him. After watching nineteen babies leave for the sale barn, she deserved that.

Our awesome donors made it happen, and for them, this Thanksgiving, I am . Momma was donated but we had to pay the farmer for Frankie to keep him from going up for sale.

I miss his Mom so much.
She taught me that not every cow is used to my overzealous cow-affection.
She showed me that she'd defend that baby if it was needed.
She taught me a little patience.

Winning the honor of her affection meant more than she knew. When she arrived, I couldn't touch her and when she died, I was holding her in my arms.

Happy Friday from Ferny Fern Fernando!

Did you know that there are very few male Holsteins living in the world? 🐄

Holstein steers are about 5 ft. at the shoulder which means they are close to 7 ft. tall with their head up. 🤪
