Today, on Melanoma Monday, we join the efforts to raise awareness about the signs of this dangerous cancer in pets.

Malignant melanomas often manifest in areas like the lips, mouth, eyes, or nail beds, but with early detection and treatment, there is a high chance of successful outcomes.

If you notice any signs of melanoma in your pet, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance and consider requesting a referral to a Veterinary Oncologist.

MedVet Oncology treats several types of cancers, including melanoma. For a list of MedVet Oncology locations, visit:

After her primary veterinarian at Rainbow Veterinary Hospital discovered a chronic UTI and kidney infection, Ahsoka visited MedVet Pittsburgh's Emergency department for further evaluation. While our dedicated Emergency doctors, Dr. Anne Stoneham and Dr. Caroline Thompson, treated Ahsoka’s kidney infection, they surprisingly uncovered an ectopic ureter. This condition occurs when the tubes responsible for draining urine from the kidneys fail to attach properly to the bladder, often resulting in urinary incontinence (especially in young female dogs).

Thanks to MedVet’s comprehensive, collaborative care, Ahsoka was transferred to the skilled hands of Dr. Leah Miller in specialty surgery. Dr. Miller facilitated an abdominal exploration to locate the correct positioning of her ureters, followed by re-implantation within the bladder. To round out Ahsoka’s care, we completed a prophylactic gastropexy, which involves suturing the stomach to the diaphragm to minimize the risk of complications to less than 1%, along with a spay.

After three weeks of exercise restrictions and another round of antibiotics, Ahsoka is now urinating normally and enjoying her best life!

Introducing R***r, a patient with a history of bilateral peria**l fistulas, or an abnormal connection between the a**l ca**l and peria**l skin. During R***r's recent recheck with Dr. Lindsay McAuliffe at Pittsburgh Veterinary Dermatology, a re**al exam revealed a thickening over his left a**l sac, raising concerns of scar tissue or an emerging a**l sac tumor. Unfortunately, further examination with Dr. Leah Miller in our Surgery department confirmed a mass effect on the left a**l sac, indicating the possibility of cancer. R***r's family made the difficult decision to remove both a**l glands for testing, which unfortunately revealed R***r's diagnosis as cancerous.

Through MedVet’s collaborative care, Dr. Christine Anderson from the Medical Oncology department soon determined that R***r's tumor exhibited several favorable factors, including small size, no invasion into blood or lymphatic vessels, and a thin margin of healthy tissue. To the family's relief, R***r's condition did not require chemotherapy or radiation. R***r now returns for recheck exams every three months to closely monitor for any tumor recurrence. Should the need arise, the expertise of Dr. Anderson and Dr. Miller will guide R***r and his family through the next steps of his journey. At MedVet Pittsburgh, we are committed to providing comprehensive care to our patients and their families, ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Meet Fiona, the adorable Shar Pei and St. Bernard mix whose unique genetics blessed her with deep wrinkles around her face and eyes. While these wrinkles make her 100% cute, they also have caused issues as she's aged, and she has developed lateral canthal entropion and trichiasis in both eyes. This meant that her eyelids were rolling inwards, and the hair on her eyelids was causing irritation and scarring on her eyes. Over the past six months, Fiona's owner noticed constant teary eyes, ocular discharge, and increased pawing at her face. Despite attempts to provide temporary relief with artificial tears, the frequent eye medications became stressful for both Fiona and her mom.

Thankfully, they found Dr. Danielle Micceri at MedVet Pittsburgh's Ophthalmology department, who performed entropion surgery. By correcting Fiona's eyelid position, the surgery eliminated the constant source of irritation and abrasion from the rubbing hair. Now, Fiona has been enjoying a month free from any eye discomfort and tearing. No longer burdened by constant cleaning and wiping, Fiona and her mom can fully embrace the positive aspects of her breed and cherish her wrinkles without any disruptions to their lives.

Many of us will be heading outdoors during the warm months ahead, which means a higher chance of tick exposure for us, and our pets. Ticks can carry diseases, like Lyme disease, that pose serious health risks. Be wary of overgrown bushes, dense vegetation, and excessive yard debris, as these are prime hideouts for ticks.

Lily toxicity is more common in warmer months, particularly for cats. Some types of lilies will cause local irritation to the mouth while others can cause kidney failure.

If your cat has eaten a lily, take them and the plant to your veterinarian, or a pet ER like MedVet, to help determine the best course of action and start immediate treatment if needed.

Join us in celebrating the incredible journey of "Perfect” Willow at MedVet Pittsburgh, a nickname given to her by our team due to her continued impeccable behavior during appointments. Willow first came to us in August 2022 with left hindlimb lameness, also known as dropped hock. After numerous appointments, a CT scan, stress radiographs, and a custom-made orthopedic brace, Dr. Lynne Snow determined that Willow needed a partial tarsal arthrodesis, a fusion of the leg bones from her "ankle" down.

However, surgery was just the beginning for Willow. She would require four months of biweekly cast changes, a responsibility that fell on her dedicated parents. Understanding the importance of proper care, Willow's owners were incredibly diligent week after week with their attention to detail, ensuring her bandages were clean and dry.

At Willow's final appointment, tears filled everyone’s eyes as our team held a mini celebration for her and her family. We are immensely proud of Willow's determination and her family's unwavering love and care.
