Kermit got to go on his first trail ride today with a horse and mule! He definitely tested me a few times when we first left, but once he realize he had to keep going he was a pro! He rode on a loose rein and hardly spooked at anything. This sweet boy gets to stay with me till July for training!!

Got a bridle and bit fit to this guy today! He definitely tested me a few times today, but the bit is much easier to control him and it doesn't rub his nose where the halter did. Time to make real progress now!

06/13/2024

Axel is coming along. Poor guy is very scared of everything, especially by his chest. He got a week off from the halter while I was gone so he slightly went backwards and was more fearful than usual, but he's becoming better by the day. I can pet him almost everywhere and now pick up his 2 front feet, as well as brush him. He'll come around with time 🥰

Kermit is getting more confident by the day. He's still really hard in the nose when he's not focused tho, but he's getting better. He handles fear much better now too for the most part. Now to fit a saddle and bridle on to this pretty guy!

Kermit is doing wonderful in his training! 🥰 next step will be to add a bit and to see if we can find a saddle to fit him

Aspen and Albert made it here! They are so cute and seem so sweet. Later today I'll separate them into their pens to start working with them. They don't seem to have an ounce of aggression at all, they likely just respond to fear.

Thank you so much Kristin Trapp for bringing them all the way down to me! It will be nice to have a fresh challenge to work with. You guys are so kind and I will forever appreciate your support! And thank you Rachel Ann for thinking of me to take on the beautiful babies.

The progress may be slow at first, but I'm super excited to see how they turn out in the end 🥰

Yesterday Kermit got the start to being ponied! I always start by letting them show whatever emotion they want to show, weather that be fear, curiosity, etc. This guy had some mixed emotions, but he naturally has a big fear of horses so this was a big deal for him. Once they either come to me or show signs of getting more comfortable, that's when I start ponying them. Kermit had a few fits at first with not wanting to walk or trying to bolt, but he was starting to get the hang of it after a little bit. We made it out if the round pen as well, but he needs a bit more practice before he'll be comfortable walking near on a loose lead. What a good boy he was though!

I was requested to teach snoopy to trot in hand and his first lesson was so great! He likely won't be a pro in the week i have before he leaves for his new home, but he did great. This is the first time I've attempted to teach a donkey to trot like this because of my lack of time, but he seemed to respond pretty well.

Snoopy came into my care about a week ago. He was given to me to work with and sell as I felt fit. He was supposed to be trained to ride, but I took him for a test spin and he was worked with undersaddle, but trained pretty poorly. This guy gets very sad and loses his spirit when it comes to being ridden so I found him the perfect home with Sue Brook. He will be very loved and won't be ridden unless he shows he wants to be. He should be off to his new home in about a week or so 🥰

Axel got a halter yesterday! He really wasn't thrilled and put up more of a fight than I wanted, but he's doing so much better today. Hopefully he'll realize this is only to help him soon so he can join his new family 🥰

Kermit's first ride with me! All the ground work paid off. He's not even been here a week and he's made so much progress already! I'm excited to see how much he'll learn for his remaining time with me 🥰

05/21/2024

Axel is making so much progress! I can almost just walk right up to him and pet him all over. He's still shy around his chest and face and with sudden movement. Today he learned about the halter. I didn't even attempt to put it on, I just want him to be comfortable with it and have no fears attached to it. He has the sweetest personality.

Kermit is the newest member of the program! He will be here for about a month to learn some new skills and brush up on his riding. He is a gorgeous blm donkey with a very upbeat personality. Follow us to see his journey with me!

Axel has improved so much already. This sweet guy is very shy around his chest and panicky when there is movement near his neck and shoulders. Yesterday he wouldn't let me pet his neck because my feet were too close to him so I used a flag and waved it under his neck. After his initial panick and attempt to attack it, he finally relaxed and he's starting to relax with me. This little guy was very misunderstood in his last home and with his last trainer so it'll take a little effort to let him know it's ok, but this sweet boy already has the best home lined up when he's done with training!

This sweet girl arrived into the program about a week ago. Paris came here to help fix her problems being saddled and bridled. She doesn't seem to have much of a problem with the saddle, but she really hates the bit so we have to work a ton on that. She also puts her tongue over the bit so I'll have to fix that problem before I can ride her. She's a super sweet energetic little mule. Paris should be staying here for about 2 months depending how she progresses. I've only had one lesson so far and she's already doing better. Starting today she will be getting worked very regularly to help improve her for her owner.

Meet Axel! I will be training this guy within the next few months for the LUCKY A RANCH, INC. I have already worked with him twice and he seems so sweet. We were told he is dangerous and kicks out, but was previously tamed. From working with him just a little bit I can see he only kicks out of fear as he's only tried to kick me once when I was getting him between 2 panels so we could doctor his legs and I put way more pressure with the flag than he was comfortable with. He seems to never have really been tamed and acts as if he's never seen any of the tools we use to tame the donks and has never taken a treat. It took a couple days for him to take treats off the ground and he finally took one from my hand today. This guy has the sweetest face and I bet he'll be a love bug in no time. Follow my page to watch his progress. He'll be available to his new home after he finishes his training 🥰

Next spotlight is of Luigi! Luigi and I competed it the 2024 Las Vegas wild showdown. He was by far the hardest donkey I have ever trained, but has become an amazing little b***o since the show. He might have already found his new home, but stay posted as things happen all the time. This little guy would make an excellent companion or hiking buddy with time to learn to trust his new person.

Tostito competed in the 2024 az b***o bonanza and won champion in the riding division. This sweet boy has been done with training and sitting in the field for a few months now. He prefers getting love, treats, and quality time over anything else. He would rather not work and really doesn't enjoy being ridden. This sweet boy is up for adoption to his perfect home, but I will be very picky as to where he goes since I put so much time into him. He is being advertised as a hiking b***o to just go on walks with, or to go as a companion as long as he gets a lot of attention and love. He has the kindest personality ever. Someone will be getting a really great donkey 🥰 contact me for more details.

Aspen and Albert are the next 2 that will be joining the program! These 2 donkeys are coming from Hee-Haw Halfway House, formerly Foghorn Farm Donkey Training. They were both rounded up from the blm and have been taken good care of, but they have a ton of fear and slight aggression. They should be arriving here at the end of May to start their long training journey. After their training is over they will be up for adoption so keep an eye out! Thank you Rachel Ann for trusting me with these 2.

Meet Benji! He's the first donkey that will be a part of this training program from the LUCKY A RANCH, INC. This sweet guy has been with me for a couple of weeks already and has made great progress. He was previously used as a roping donkey and that took a toll on his confidence. He has the sweetest personality, but is very shy around his face or with ropes. He does all obstacles already and will make a wonderful donkey with time. After he gets castrated, he will start his journey on becoming a saddle donkey for my nephew who also lacks confidence so they can grow and learn to trust eachother.

Welcome to Ears to the Sky Training and Art! Here's a little about myself. My name is Jacque Ashburner and I'm located in southern AZ. My program focuses on training donkeys with positive reinforcement from wild to willing, teaching them tricks, starting them under saddle, and working on groundwork. I have been around donkeys my whole life and had the pleasure of working with them for about 5 years now. In that time I have been able to tame over 15 wild donkeys and work with so many more. I have competed in several TIP challenges with 9 donkeys and placed top 3 with them all! Along with training, I offer custom paintings of your equine friends. This has been my goal for a while now, so I'm super excited to get started!

All of June is already booked for training, but if you'd like a custom painting or to send your long ear friend my way, don't hesitate to reach out!

Don't forget to watch out for the introduction of the animals I have in at the moment or the ones that are/will be up for adoption!
