September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month!

Good Afternoon!

So we have some big changes coming to the McPherson Animal Shelter! We are working with a new Veterinarian and are now able to get all of our animals Spayed/Neutered before they go home! This is huge for us as we will now be able to offer fully vetted animals! With that being said, our prices will be changing due to us offering more services for the animals in our care. Tater and Dale will run straight into your heart if you let them!

Dale is a 10 month old Border Terrier. He is a small breed and is only 16lbs!
Tater is a 6 month old mixed breed who will be a medium sized dog as he is currently only 36lbs!

We didn't even get the chance to post this girl up for adoption and she was adopted. Chicca went home to her forever home yesterday! She was a sweet, shy and cuddly girl while she was here!

We had a blast at First Responders Night on the 15th and then made a splash at The Making A Splash Adoption Event at The McPherson Water Parks' 2nd Annual Pup Pool "Paw"ty on the 17th! This is Dale. He is a 10-month-old Border Terrier. He is an incredibly friendly and outgoing companion who adores making new friends and engaging with other animals. His warm and playful nature makes him a perfect match for children of all ages. His enthusiasm knows no bounds when it comes to playing with his squeaky toys and engaging in a game of fetch with his cherished ball. Moreover, he finds great joy in cuddling up and showering affectionate kisses on everyone he encounters. If there is another dog in the home a meet-and-greet is required.

Today is National Check the Chip Day! Make sure your pet's microchip is up to date and registered! If you don't know the number you can go to most Veterinary Clinics or Animal Shelters and they should be able to scan your pet for you.

If your pet doesn't have a microchip you can get one here at the shelter for $20! It can make all the difference in getting your pet back and can help prevent theft. Keep your pet safe and Check the Chip.

City Ordinance Sec. 10-47

Vaccinating your pets is very important for the safety of other animals and people they are interacting with. The rabies vaccination is an essential vaccination that should be provided for both inside and outside animals. The rabies vaccines can be a single-year vaccination or a multi-year vaccination.

Vaccinating and keeping your animals current on their vaccines creates a barrier of protection if they were to be bit by an infected animal. It also decreases the chance of domestic animals spreading rabies to the human population.

The rabies vaccination for people can be costly, so by having a veterinarian vaccinate your pet, it decreases the chance of people needing the vaccine if they were to be bitten.

Due to the rabies vaccination being required by the State of Kansas, the rate of animals that have come up as positive for rabies has decreased significantly. In 2023, there were a total of 25 positive tests for rabies in the State of Kansas while in 2013, there were a total of 60 positive tests for rabies.

Last night was the BEST night! We had a double adoption! Tulsa and Buddy are going to be roomies and best buds! Their new families are fantastic and we wish them the best lives ever! Thank you all so much for adopting and congratulations!

Update: Adopted!

Meet Buddy, the two-year-old male Pit Bull. Buddy is a playful and loving companion who adores affection. His playful antics include zoomies and fetch. He would do well with other dogs in the home, but we do not know if he does well with cats and children. If there is another dog in the home a meet-and-greet is required.

This week is International Assistance Dog Week! The infographic below explains what an Assistance dog also known as a Service Dog is. They do a very important job and we feel it is very important to highlight them. Please remember that an Assistance Dog AKA Service Dog is not the same thing as an ESA. It takes a long time and a lot of money to train an Assistance Dog to do the job they do. It is important to remember not to touch or talk to an Assistance Dog while they are working. We know that everyone is waiting for an update on Jubilee. We are happy to let you all know that her dad came and got her today! You can see in these photos the love they have for each other.
