Senior alert! This spunky, older fellow is around 55 pounds, 8-10ish years old, and we believe a boxer/pit mix. His four-year-old human foster sibling named him Rex! Rex has had rough life as evidenced by the roadmap of scars on his skin. He was skinny and unhealthy when rescued with terrible allergies, parasites, some lumps that needed to be removed, and teeth that needed cleaning. Rex was picked up as a stray in Houston with many painful, ulcerated burn marks on his paws and underside, thought to be from trauma from being on concrete in the hot sun. He then almost lost his life when he landed on the euthanasia list due to space at a high kill shelter. Despite all of those things, Rex loves people and his forgiveness for our species is very gracious. He reminds us all that age is just a number and resilience can open doors for life to improve for the better. Rex has done well with the kids and all the other dogs in his foster home. He seems to be crate trained and housetrained. We are looking for a forever family to spoil Rex for his remaining time on earth. We have promised to find him a family that will give him regular meals, cuddles, stability, and vet care (though he definitely has a phobia/distrust of the doctor’s office😬). He also requests bed and furniture privileges as he’s becoming rather accustomed to those and appreciates snuggling under his blankets 😂. He is not shy about demanding what he wants and has quite the personality. Rex is still fairly spry and with decent mobility for his age, though he does benefit from some arthritis management. Rex would most appreciate a mature household where he can be a happy home-body living his best predictable life complete with daily treats and pets.

We are excited to introduce you to Andy! Andy is a 10 lbs, 12-year-old, Chihuahua mix that comes from a home of lifelong neglect. Since joining MHCR in January, Andy has had A LOT of medical makeovers. He got a dental with a ton of extractions, a much needed nail trim, a cryptorchid neuter (his testicles didn’t descend) AND he had a benign mass removed from his side. He’s outwardly a whole new man. One would think he feels like a new man, too. But, alas, he is still PI**ED off. He is a grouchy m**o that likes to live on his terms. He cohabitates with other dogs and children but he voices his displeasure with them regularly. He’d likely do ok in a home with calm, older dogs – the more dead the better, and no kids. He’s house trained and free roam trustworthy, though, which has to count for something, especially amongst small, male, dog lovers. Luckily, Andy is older, so rescuing him (and it is indeed a rescue) will not be a decision you’ll regret for another 10 years – we’re guessing 5 tops, depending on your karma. Why are we so excited to introduce him, you ask? Let’s just say his welcome is wearing thin.

Meet Charlotte! 💕🐶
Charlotte is a gentle 3.5-month-old sweetheart who is learning how wonderful life can be! Though she is timid around humans and needs time to build trust, her progress is slow but steady. With patience and love, she will continue to blossom into the amazing dog she’s meant to be.
Charlotte adores other animals and will absolutely need a home with another confident dog to help show her the ropes. She finds comfort and confidence in the company of other pups. She’s about 80% house trained and already knows “sit” and “wait” – such a smart girl! She will also need daily exercise to help her build confidence and continue her progress.
If you have a loving heart, a little patience, and a furry friend ready to welcome Charlotte, she will reward you with a lifetime of love. Could you be the perfect match for this sweet soul? 🏡💕

🎶 Oh Sandy, baby, can’t you see? 🎶. Sandy is a playful, 1 year old, chihuahua/meerkat mix. It’s true, just look at her pics. Sandy is dog friendly, good with older kiddos, and around 9 lbs. She’s looking for a young, fun family that likes a frisky canine companion. She’s a bit shy at first meet but warms up and she comes complete with her own bunny bed that’s her fave!

Yesterday’s donation button snafu thwarted our fundraising efforts 😩. So, allow me to introduce you to the second puppy with a massive unexpected medical bill.

This is Willow and she had a broken heart. ❤️‍🩹 Willow went in for a routine spay appointment. Upon examination prior to, the vet heard a very loud heart murmur, which meant no surgery for Willow and the need for echocardiogram.

🏥 24 hours later, Willow was off to Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Cardio Dept!

👩‍⚕️The cardiologists determined Willow had stenosis of her pulmonary valve. 🫀. That means her valve was constricted, essentially, not allowing proper blood flow through her heart. If left untreated, this would be fatal. 💀

We don’t easily accept that kind of prognosis for a puppy, so off to surgery she went. We are happy to report the doctors successfully ballooned 🎈her valve and her pressures are now normal.

What’s even cooler? They did it all through a tiny little nick in one of her veins. 🩹

Willow’s prognosis is wonderful and now the only damage is to our budget. If you can spare a few bucks, we’d be ever so grateful! As always, donations are tax deductible. Please give this post a share.

Little Maggie is such a unique gem! She’s petite at around 25 lbs (ok, well, she will be when she hits her weight loss goal). Maggie is dog friendly, low-medium energy (say what???), and she’s just as sweet as she can be with her foster mom. Maggie is good on a leash, calm in public, and enjoys car rides. Did I mention her tiny little nubbin? Because she has a teensy one and it’s so cute! Maggie doesn’t like being touched by people she doesn’t know. Care should be taken by her family to help others be respectful of her boundaries.

Maggie joined MHCR from a very small, underfunded, shelter in Texas. She had spent some time there and the shelter staff thought she might be pregnant. Turns out she just likes food. 🤷‍♀️. Maggie got a dental, a spay, and has started her heartworm treatment. She’s ready to settle in with her forever humans. We recommend a home with a fenced in yard, and someone looking for a snuggle buddy.

UPDATE: OUR DONATE BUTTON WORKS NOW! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

MHCR peeps we got hammered yesterday with unexpected medical and could really use your help!
🏥First up is Annie! 🏥

She entered MHCR in November as an extremely emaciated, somber young pup. While she put on weight in foster, it wasn’t as quickly as we’d have liked and we noticed she drank an excessive amount of water. 💧 After much testing, it was discovered that Annie had a huge liver shunt that was causing her body to not properly filter her blood. 🩸 This would ultimately be fatal to her. At only a year old, we couldn’t let this be her fate.
🚑Yesterday, she had a life saving surgery at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital by a first class team of surgeons. 👩‍⚕️ They identified the massive shunt within her liver and were able to apply a suture that will scar over time, slowly blocking off the shunt so her blood filters properly. 🪡 As you can imagine, this was an extensive surgery, with lots of imaging and testing on the front end and even more testing for follow-ups in the months to come to ensure it’s working. 🩻
💰Any help you can offer towards this sweet girl would be much appreciated. As always, donations are tax deductible!

Marshmallow is a curious and outgoing pup! She is brave and is the first to investigate new things. Marshmallow has extra dew claws on her back legs that are floppy and adorable, confirming our suspicions that she is a Great Pyrenees mix. She loves to play tug of war with her foster canine siblings and pounces like a cat on a mouse. She’s also very attention driven which makes training a breeze! Marshmallow is approx 12 weeks old.

Willow is extremely adaptable pup! She loves all people (she’s mostly with adults in her foster home but has been happy to meet a couple small neighbor children too), engages well with other dogs and has been respectfully learning some important manners and social cues from them. She gets a little scared of loud noises but recovers quickly and is building her confidence a little every day. Willow is playful, lovable and extremely eager and quick to learn new things. She had a basic understanding of “sit”, “down” and “come” within about 48 hours and is making impressive strides with potty training. Willow is approx 12 weeks old and is believed to be a Great Pyrenees mix.

Good golly Grady! Just look at this handsome, fluffy, mug. Grady is a 7 month old, male, Great Pyrenees mix. He LOVES his human kids and canine friends. His foster mom frequently finds him up in the swing set with the whole gang. Grady is big and clumsy. He’s stubborn, like Pyrs can be, but he’s smart, too. Grady uses a doggie door and he’s working on making positive associations with his crate. He much prefers the fluffy dog bed next to his foster mom’s side at night. If you’re looking for a family dog and have a large yard, Grady is the guy for you.

Miss Mabel is an energetic, fun, smart as a whip, Schnauzer/Heeler mix. She’s a medium sized girl with the body of a heeler and the coat of a schnauzer. Mabel is approximately 8 months old and dog friendly, but is best paired with a similarly sized, playful, male. Senior dogs will be very annoyed by her energy. Mabel loves every human she meets, big or small. Mabel will thrive in a home with a yard and humans that enjoy smart pups and that like to train. No cats, please.

Cute is a breed, isn’t it? Seriously, look at that face and brown ear! Ian the cutest little waddler, with super soft fur. He’s approx 6-7 months old and we believe he’s a heeler mix (maybe border collie or Pyrenees?). Ian’s needs are pretty simple—he wants to belong and be loved. If you do those two things, you will have a loyal, loving and sweet friend for life. He has proven to be very adaptable. As long as you set and consistently show him what the rules are, he will quickly learn how to live in your home. He is an intelligent and curious little guy. Ian is a sweet and friendly boy. There is not a mean bone in his body. He isn’t destructive either—even his stuffed toys are safe. He’s still young so needs things in his mouth, but will happily chew on whatever toys and bones you direct him toward. Ian understands what “nope” means and will stop doing something that you teach him is not OK. He “speaks” when “spoken to,” but he’s a pretty quiet dude. His favorite things are meal time, his collection of Nylabones (he is a puppy after all), his pack, and playing in the snow. At his foster home, he has loved having dogs to play with and enjoys a fenced yard, we request both in his forever home. Ian is still young and has things to learn. His foster family has been teaching him important words like, “come,” “sit,” and “potty.” He’s mastering his house training and leash walking skills and he sleeps quietly all night without any accidents in his crate.

Meet Nala, the sweetest cuddle bug with an adorable wiggly butt and a heart full of love! 💕 This precious girl might be a bit timid when it comes to sudden noises (we’re looking at you, vacuum!), but her gentle spirit shines through every day. 🌟 Nala has the most incredible underbite – you’ll definitely want to snap a million photos of that cute face! 📸 She’s inseparable from her best canine foster friend, Dwight, and together, they make the perfect duo! 🐶✨ Nala is 4 years old, and around 35 lbs. She is best suited in a quieter home with another canine companion to show her the ropes.

Raisin is a 6-7 year old, Boxer mix. She found herself on death row at a high kill shelter due to lack of space. She entered the shelter with puppies and they were all adopted and/or went to rescues. She was facing a fate no mama dog should. Luckily, a foster stepped up and saved her life! Raisin as been recuperating from the years of stress on her body. She’s now been spayed, undergone treatment for heartworms, and is gaining the weight her body has needed for far too long. Raisin requests a forever home with excellent sun exposure, as she LOVES a good cat nap in the sun. Have cats and dogs already? Raisin doesn’t care! She’s friendly with all (large and small). Raisin is house trained and dog door trained. While she makes an excellent snuggle buddy, she’s spry and has pep in her step. She enjoys tug, playing with toys, and taking car rides. She’s really quite a turnkey dog for those seeking less work with optimal reward!

Ladies and gentlemen please put your hands together for BIGGIE, named after the famous Biggie Smalls! And yes, he does love it when you call him Big Papa. This gorgeous brindle boy is confident and loves to play with his canine foster siblings. He sleeps through the night in his kennel and is so close to being fully potty trained. Biggie loves a good chew, rope or plushy toy to occupy his time. He’s also a huge fan of anything cozy when it comes to blankets and beds. The number one thing on his wish list though is a big yard to run around in. Biggie is a very smart boy and is doing quite well with his training. If you have space in your heart and home with a passion for helping dogs be their absolute best, then Biggie could be your guy! He’s estimated at 4.5-5 months old and is presently 33 lbs. Given his breed, Presa Canario, we prefer similar breed experience.

Meet Belle, our sweet, southern bell. This beauty queen is quite a lady. She’s around 3-4 years old and weighs around 58 lbs (ideally she will fill in around 60-65 lbs). Belle isn’t much of a barker – what true lady would be? She is excellent with the other dogs in her foster home from the cranky seniors to the rambunctious young boys. Belle came to us from a high-intake, high-kill shelter in Houston, TX. She found herself on the euthanasia list due to lack of space. A foster saw her plea and offered her a safe place to land. Once arriving into foster care, we quickly grew to just adore this girl. True to her little lady ways, she’s not had a potty accident in the house and has been trustworthy free roam. Belle will do well in a variety of homes. She would greatly appreciate a comfy couch, as that’s where she likes to recharge and a canine sibling would be a perk, too!
