I just finished maceration on this small black bear skull and the dentition tells a story. One upper tooth is completely missing, with clear evidence the loss occurred during the animal’s life rather than post processing. The remodeled, irregular socket and surrounding bone changes are consistent with antemortem tooth loss, most commonly associated with infection, trauma, or severe periodontal disease. Finds like this are a reminder that skulls preserve a biological record long after soft tissue is gone.

Coyote mating season is underway and typically lasts several weeks through late winter into early spring. During this time coyotes are more territorial and defensive, which increases the risk to pets. Small dogs, cats, and even larger dogs can be targeted, especially if left unattended outdoors.

Do not allow pets outside alone, particularly at dawn, dusk, or overnight. Use leashes, keep yard lights on, and remain alert to coyote activity in your area. The risk exists year-round, but it is elevated during mating season.

Stay aware. Supervise pets. Reduce preventable losses.
