Linus is more nervous than his sister Lucy so his progress has been just a tad slower as we work to bond with him and earn his trust! He had a great morning session with Trainer Drew though! They worked on building engagement on the leash and getting on the place bed on command! Good job, boys!

Miss Lucy is getting into the routine of training and learning how to respond to both her trainers and leash guidance! Trainer Ashley does a lot of 180 degree turns and waits for Lucy to follow suit, giving lots of praise and releasing tension on the leash as soon as she does! She is catching on quickly!

Maggie has an insatiable hunger and loves to beg for food at home! Working on her place command while people eat (or pretend to eat) near her, should help with this issue a bit and give Maggie a job to do instead of breathing down everyone’s necks for a morsel of human food! 🤣

Ruby is back for a little refresher…mostly help with her impulse control as she still has a lot of puppy in her! This results in her often trying to bust right through thresholds like a bull in a China shop! We did some work today with this and she got back into the groove quickly!

Like many little dogs, Lula Mae’s first response to unfamiliar things is usually to bark! We want to show her a more polite way to behave when she is in these situations so we use positive reinforcement and a dog who will keep their distance as we allow Lula to gain confidence slowly and with structure! We began her session with working on her engagement with her trainer, and then progressed to letting Lula sniff Laika. Laika gives a fair (yet loud lol) correction when Lula throws herself at her, but then proceeds to sniff her back end in the appropriate dog greeting manner! She is learning! Good job, lil girl!

Bear had his first socialization session with Laika and he did very well greeting her politely and focusing on Trainer Ashley when she asked! Good job, Bear!

Bear is TOTALLY obsessed with his housemate Paisley who went through our program awhile back! He loves to chase her around, but has also proven to be able to still give his trainer his attention and fight his urges to pounce and play with lil P! Check these two out learning to balance work and play! 💕

One of Maya’s biggest triggers is other dogs! At the beginning of our session, she was a very fixated on Laika and would bum rush her in attempts to greet. After some time and rewarding her for following through on commands with Trainer Ashley, Maya settled a lot and the novelty of a new dog being around wore off. She was then able to compose herself enough to politely greet Laika and end things on a neutral note! Good girl, Maya!

Nail Trimming Tip: Stealing a page from Chowder's puppy training days, we used the same method to introduce Barton to nail trims. Barton is now approaching 13 weeks, and this is his first experience with "grooming." As we all know, nail trimming can be a nightmare for dogs and their owners! We gave Barton a bully stick and waited until he was really enthralled in chewing it, and then calmly started to trim his front nails. We will continue to create a positive association with nail trims by only allowing Barton to chew the bully stick when his nails are being done. The key is to reserve the bully stick only for nail trimming. To this day, Chowder gets so excited to see the nail clippers or dremmel because he knows he will get to enjoy his bully stick.
