What does it mean to rescue a horse? It means saving them from an uncertain fate, maybe even death. When we see a sweet face like this at a feedlot or with a kill buyer with an auction number glued to their coat, we know we have to do everything possible to get them out of there. Not everyone believes in "bailing" horses from the auction pipeline, but we do! Just five weeks ago this beautiful soul found herself alone and scared because someone sold her. Aurora will never again be at risk, be sold or even bred for human greed.

It has been such a long road to recovery for Nixie, but we have made it! For those of you who remember, we pulled her from a feedlot over 1 year ago. She suffered from slight rotation of and fracture of the coffin bone. Over 12 months of treatment rehabilitation, trimming antibiotics and X-rays. She is sound and she is almost ready for us to saddle her up and assess her talents. This was only possible through patience and excellent care from our amazing veterinarian, Dr. Millian Wills of Potomac Animal Wellness (P.A.W.s) and a farrier who dedicated most of her own personal skills and time, Katie Carroll. We believe Nixie will make a wonderful trail riding parture for the right person.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Foxy Girl. She arrived here at SMEM 2 years ago a very senior mare in poor health. Her last day here was a beautiful sunny day with a hearty meal, lying in the sun and lots of TLC from our entire team. We are happy that we were able to provide her protection from harm and show her kindness and love in her final years.

The happy update regarding these missing minis just shows that the community can rally together, make a different and prayers do work! The fact that they now know they're whereabouts is amazing, however they are not totally safe until a binding contract can be made with the people who have them now. We need the community to realize that without adoption contracts and people that will honor them, no horse is safe from a kill buyer! We are so happy for the wonderful team at The Santana Center. They are a wonderful group and actually were mentors to Southern Maryland Equine Miracles (SMEM) in the beginning of our rescue. I myself adopted a sweet mare from them.
We are encouraged by their story and realize now that we need to make our own local community aware that SMEM is currently going through a similar heartbreaking and stressful situation.
More information, photos and details will be posted soon in hopes that we can have the same happy results and get our horse back in trustworthy caregivers.

And here she is!
AURORA (no longer a tag #), beautiful, creme colored, 10-yr old, 14.2 hand mare. Bailed her from a feedlot thanks to a community of people that cared and donated towards her safety. We continued fundraising to pay for her transportation from Louisiana to Maryland where she is now safe wt us at SMEM. She was listed as "heavy with foal". However, this week's examination by Dr. Willis has proven otherwise. Lucky for this girl, she is NOT pregnant. We have found her to be extremely sweet and she knows things! Stay tuned for her story going forward as we look forward to working with her under saddle and helping her find the best, forever home.

This is what happens when people who adopt fail to uphold their part of the agreement and don't honor their contracts. If you ever wonder why a rescue organization has to do farm inspections, background checks and do regular checkups on each adopted horse after adoption, this is why. And even when we do our due diligence and try our hardest to protect a horse with all these precautions, people can't be trusted. Praying that these horses are returned to their rightful owners at the Santana Center!

Please share and help the Santana Center find these ponies. This is a great reminder to ALL that rescue doesn't end at adoption! Animal adoption contracts are meant to protect the animal for the remainder of their lives. We take very seriously this commitment to the adopted animal. Adopters who breach their contracts, lie about the whereabouts of a horse, block or refuse to give truthful updates causes serious concerns about the integrity of the adopter and the wellness of the animal. Legal action is then required to protect the animal.
