Update | 6/11/24 9:30am: Internet and Phones have been restored. Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding.

Update: Comcast Technican will be out in the morning to fix the internet. In the meantime, please feel free to text our number below. If you do call, it may seem like you are put on a hold and then the phone call will end. We promise that it is due to not having any internet connection as our phones are cloud based.

Due to an area connection issue, our internet is currently out, which means our phone lines are down. We are working quickly to get this resolved and restored. If you need assistance in the meantime, please text 804-559-9800.

With excitement, Doc has been captured and reunited with his owner!! Thank you ALL for your commitment, dedication and generosity! A big thank you to the local businesses around Lee Park Road for their patience and understanding as our search team searched parking lots and properties at all hours of the night looking for Doc! We appreciate Hanover County Sheriff's Office for checking on us and keeping an eye out as well. Special thanks to Bennet Funeral Home for allowing us to use their parking lot and other areas during this mission. Lastly, thank you to the neighbors and community for your patience and vigilance and reporting sightings. This has been a tiring effort, Doc has been on the minds of everyone and this outcome turned successful because of all the outreach and support by so many.

6/7/24 - DOC HAS BEEN FOUND and REUNITED WITH HIS OWNERS!

Important Information | Latest Update: 9:40am 6/7

— Doc escaped from his elderly owner in our parking lot.

— Doc WILL RUN if approached due to his skittish behavior. If he runs, do not chase him! It is best to keep activity quiet and observe from a distance if spotted. We highly encourage the public to remain diligent and report any sightings of Doc so we can track his whereabouts. We have a trap set. It will be near impossible to put your hands on him.

— Do not leave food down, this may deter him from the trap set.

— We will be utilizing this post to provide updates!

⭐️ See Below!

— Update as of 9:40am 6/7/24: Doc has not been caught yet, despite several sightings and another night of monitoring his movements. He is very active starting around 7-8 pm, often bolting across Lee-Davis Road and Lee Park, especially at night. We urge everyone traveling on these roads, particularly at night, to slow down and use caution. ⚠️ especially around Bell Creek Middle and Mechanicsville High School. We will be attempting another capture this evening. Daytime sightings are rare. We have several plans in place, including multiple traps. If anyone can loan a large animal trap, please drop it off at Mechanicsville Animal Hospital. To assist this evening, contact the number above.

— Update as of 7:00pm 6/6/24: There has been a confirmed sighting of Doc on Lee Park Road in the wooded area behind the oral surgeon. This is one of his normal spots, so he is staying in the area as we assumed.

— Update as of 5:32pm 6/6/24: The last accurate sighting of Doc was at 4am at Bell Creek Middle School parking lot. He has been known to venture there and Mechanicsville High School’s parking lot and of course back to Lee-Park Road. There was a potential sighting of a black dog on Bell Creek Road near Sandy’s Plants near the culvert this evening around 5:30pm, but could not confirm if it was Doc. I will be out this evening monitoring to see if I see him near Bennet Funeral Home, where he has been since in that area. Please be on the lookout near these locations, especially the potential sighting on Bell Creek Road.

— Update as of 12:00am 6/6/24: We currently have a trap set. Several community members were out tonight monitoring the situation. If you see him, please text 804-690-2413 to help us track his whereabouts and ensure he stays in the area and that he is safe. He seems to have created a diameter around Lee Park Road. At this point, we are extremely confident of knowing his travel route. He WILL RUN if approached due to his skittish behavior. Therefore, it's best to keep activity quiet and only observe from a distance. Tonight, he approached the trap and put his head inside, showing some trust in the food and water placed there. We kindly ask the public not to leave food elsewhere and to not approach or chase him. Members in the community have dedicated their time this evening and into the morning to check the trap every few hours. The trap is located at a place that he keeps migranting back to.

— Update as of 2:24pm 6/5/24: A team member of ours recently sighted Doc this afternoon. We have been in contact with a professional who specializes in tracking and trapping lost dogs. Following their recommendation, as we set up traps and cameras, we request that the public refrain from putting down any food, as this may deter him from approaching the traps.

— We highly encourage the public to remain diligent and report any sightings of Doc so we can track his whereabouts. However, we ask that you avoid actively searching for him or trying to approach him when he is spotted, as he will run. This could unintentionally push him away from the traps.

We cannot thank everyone enough for their dedication, support, time, and commitment to finding Doc. We will keep everyone posted! Fingers crossed.

— Update as of 2:00am 6/5/24: Last night and into this morning, many members of the community spent their night tracking down Doc. Despite many attempts and sightings, we were unsuccessful as he runs when approached. Please continue to look out for him and be cautious when driving around Lee-Davis and Lee-Park Road. He is known to cross the street to Mechanicsville High School, then back to Lee-Park Road and around Bennett Funeral Home. We believe he is staying within this territory around our building. Please contact us immediately if you see him!

6/4/2024: Doc the German Shepherd pup had other plans besides his vet appointment this morning and got away from his owners in our parking lot. He is likely somewhere near the Lee Park Road/ 360 area, please call our office at (804)559-9800 if you spot him!

Our office now offers Phovia, a quick and easy treatment that can reduce healing time by more than half. When combined with its special gel, the Phovia system releases fluorescent light energy to stimulate different skin layers and promote regeneration. This results in fewer applications of creams and sprays, reduced antibiotic use, and less time in the dreaded e-collar. The Phovia system is very safe, takes only about 2-4 minutes per treatment, and can be used for various conditions. Many pets see improvement in just one or two sessions, like our patient pictured here in the video after just one treatment, with no oral medications. The before and after pictures shown were taken on the day of treatment and then seven days later.

TC is a neutered male 8 year old kitty whose elderly owner became sick and could no longer keep him. He has been staying with us until he finds his new person, and he would really like someone to bail him outta here! He is very sweet and loving , but would prefer somewhere more calm and quiet than our hospital for his permanent address. He is current on vaccines and will need to remain on urinary diet once adopted . Please let us know if you’re interested in this cool cat!

Join us in helping James River Greyhounds assist these fast friends in their transition from racing life to pet life by dropping off some much needed donations. Many of the JRG Greyhounds are patients here and they are all the most wonderful, loving dogs. We can’t say enough good things about the work Mark and his team do to adopt them to their new homes!

Dear Boarding Clients,

We hope this message finds you well. We want to inform you of a recent change in our boarding policy regarding our hospital food. To ensure the well-being of your pets, we are implementing a requirement for owners to provide their own food supply during their pet's stay. We will no longer offer our complementary diet as an option. This change is motivated by our commitment to maintaining a consistent diet for your pet. We understand that dietary changes can add stress to your pet's gastrointestinal system, and we believe that offering the same diet they have at home can contribute to their overall well-being and reduce any stress to their gut.

In the event that there is insufficient food provided for the entire stay or if a last-minute extension is requested, rest assured that we will not allow your pet to run out of food and will feed them our hospital supply. However, to prevent any future charges for diet supply and to ensure a seamless boarding experience, we kindly ask that you bring an ample supply of your pet's food during their next boarding visit.

Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to providing the best possible care for your beloved pets while they are in our care for boarding!

Sincerely,
Mechanicsville Animal Hospital

Thank you Leashes of Valor for all that you do for the veteran community and trusting us to provide veterinary care to animals who are are making an impact on human life 🐾💚 Wishing our own, a very Happy Birthday, Dr. Callahan!

Not all heroes wear capes. "Doc" Callahan is one of them. It's Doc and the amazing staff at Mechanicsville Animal Hospital who see our future service dogs when they first arrive at Leashes of Valor. He helps keep them well along their journeys with us -- and sometimes even long after they've met their warriors.

And as many of you may remember, it was Doc who, on not more than a moment's notice, made a house call so that Axel could cross the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by those who loved him most.

What you may not know is that Doc and his beautiful "better half" are also fosters who regularly open their hearts and homes to the pups in our program, like this little guy. Today, we hope you'll join us in wishing Doc Callahan a very happy birthday.

Today, we salute you. What you do for us and so many others truly changes lives.
