Cue combos challenge your pup to think when you consistently change up the order of asked for cues. Does your dog offer cues that you don’t ask for? They tend to do this when they think the cues are one and the same. For example they sit then offer a paw. A great way to break this habbit is to ask for cues in different sequences. I teach my pet parents how to condition a cue so your dog understands what is being asked of them in different environments. So they understand Sit is separate from down and so on. Beginner Step #1 Sit/Stay Combo Goal: have your pup stay in the sit for a longer duration. What this cue is teaching your pup: Strengthens their Impulse control, by keeping them longer in a Sit you are teaching them patience, teaching single minded focus, the value of following your lead. By using treats we offer them a pay off for following our lead. The treat and positive praise over time will create a conditioned response pathway in their brain. Once a behavior is conditioned you can take away the treat and use positive praise and pets as a reward. Consistency is key, Happy Training! For this and more contact me for all your dog training needs & contact us for your free phone consultation today. Sit-Stay Stage 1, beginner stage with the hand signal. For Stay the hand signal is your hand up in a Stop Sign position. Tip: hold a treat in the hand that is in the Stop Position. Step # 1 have a handful of treats in one hand ready to go. In the other hand that you will hold up, have one treat. Step# 2 ask for the Sit (one time only), use the Marker word Yes to communicate they did what was asked for. Step #3 Immediately say Stay (only one time) as you simultaneously hold your hand up in the stop sign position. Use the Marker Word Yes. Step 4 Give the multiple treats in your free hand, one at a time by sliding them forward or by allowing them to eat the treats out of your hand. And you have completed the beginning stage of a successful Sit/Stay. Stay tuned for this cue in action from start to finish. Bell Training is a great potty training tool if your pup isn’t alerting you to go out. What you are seeing here is Sailors second training session of Bell Training, in this session I gave him the space to figure out what it was I was asking of him, and when he seemed confused I showed him again what I wanted: by cupping under the bell with a treat in my hand so when he took the treat his nose gently jingled the bell. Sailor proceeded to rock this exercise by using his nose repeatedly to ring the bell. At the end of the this exercise I said his potty catch phrase , “Do you have to go out” and we went outside for him to do his business. With all new behaviors you are teaching a dog set backs will happen, as dog training isn’t linear. Positive conditioning takes time. By using treats with a combination of positive praise you are creating a pleasure pathway in their brain, so consistently with their “paycheck” is key. Is your pup getting enough daily outdoor activity? Most dogs will display unwanted behaviors out of boredom and out of having pent up energy because they aren’t getting enough physical and mental stimulation activity. Estimated amounts of exercise based on breeds: Toy breeds: at least 30 minutes Non-Sporting Dogs: at least 45 minutesTerriers & Working Dogs: at least 60 minutesHounds, Herding & Sporting Dogs: at least 90 minutes. Each dog will have their own unique needs and therefore some dogs may need more exercise then the above activity time. Combined activity with mental stimulation through the use of Kongs and Puzzle Toys and incorporating training into your daily routine will keep many unwanted behaviors in check. Backyard play does not replace taking your dog for a walk. Walks are enriching by giving your dog the opportunity to sniff, sniffing reduces anxiety by releasing calming hormones. Puzzle Toy, Kong enrichment challenge! Set up a combination of enrichment toys for your pup to give them a different experience, alternate combinations daily. Pro Tip: freeze multi layered food in the Kong to add difficulty and duration. It will take your pup longer to eat. Goal: create a harder task that challenges your pup mentally and burns off energy. Licking creates endorphins and sniffing creates a calming effect. *Sound On* for Loose Leash Walking Exercise, stage one, the stationary exercise explained. I teach you and your pup the Loose Leash Walking Exercise in stages so that each stage is fully understood by your pup then we can graduate to the next stage. Once your pup can do this exercise successfully in the house, we then add in distraction and difficulty by taking them in the backyard to practice this exercise, then we go into the front yard. When they can successfully complete this stationary exercise in all 3 places then we are ready to move onto Stage 2 where we add in steps. From here we work to add on steps and then finally we do this on a walk and TaDa your pup no longer pulls! 🎉🐕🐾This exercise teaches your pup: -How to follow your lead while on leash. -When there is tension to break the tension by coming towards you not pulling away. -Teaches them what side to walk on when you are holding the leash a certain way. -Teaches them eye contact and to pay attention to you while on leash. -Teaches them you are a team and how to work together as a team. -Teaches them to stay by your knee while on walks (unless they are sniffing-sniffing is enriching) For this and more contact us for your Free Consultation. How do you know if your pup really understands what cue your asking of them? -If they offer cues with out being promoted all in a row they most likely think they are all the same cue- If you ask them for a specific cue and they give you the wrong one. -If you ask them for a cue in public or a different environment and they don’t perform it, they aren’t ignoring you it means the cue hasn’t been solidified fully. -You have to repeat cues multiple times until they do it, again they’re not ignoring you they’re figuring out what it is your asking of them. Tips: Practice cues separately and continue to reinforce with a combination of treats, positive praise and pets.Use the “Marker word ‘YES’” to convey they did what you asked of them, it will also remind you to reinforce, doing this is especially helpful when asking for multiple cues so they understand each cue is separate. -Take them into different environments and practice each cue with them. There are different levels to training and each level has specific goals, so if your pup isn’t listening in certain environments or situations go back to basics. We are here to help you take your training to the next level of having a pup that listens to you in public and is polite and predictable in public setting.
