It’s that time of year! I just renewed my membership to Pet Sitter’s International (PSI), the most widely respected association in the pet sitting industry. They have excellent courses on how the pet sitter can be prepared for emergencies, perform first aid/CPR, how to care for exotic pets, and many more! The resources are excellent and I wouldn’t be able to find them anywhere else. Thank you

"It’s October, which means that fall is in full swing and we can count on all things being extra cozy and probably a little pumpkin spiced. But there’s another key marker to the fall season, and that’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

During the month of October every year, we take the time to celebrate our rescued canine counterparts and encourage our friends nationwide to open their hearts and their homes to a dog in need. While we want our friends everywhere to expand their furry families and adopt, that’s not the only way you can get involved this year.

Besides adopting, you could also consider becoming a foster caregiver for a large dog. Large dogs have so much love to give but are sometimes overlooked in the shelter due to concerns over strength or energy levels, and common misconceptions such as “big dogs need more space”. The reality is that all dogs, regardless of size, are individuals with their own unique personalities, needs and ideal homes.

Foster caregivers help dogs in need as they make their journeys toward loving homes by giving them lots of love and time to experience living in a home. And now, with shelters still operating at limited capacity, fosters are becoming “Adoption Ambassadors” and helping their foster pets find loving homes.

And even if you’re not ready to adopt or open your home temporarily as a foster, you can also help shelter animals by sharing adoptable animals’ profiles on your social media channels with your family and friends. Visit our friends at The Shelter Pet Project to find a shelter near you where you can get more information on adoption, fostering and everything you need to help rescue dogs in your community!"

September is National Preparedness Month, and any emergency plan you have should include your pets!

The following tips can help you make sure you are prepared if you and your pet(s) need to evacuate:

-Update identification. Make sure your pet wears current identification at all times that includes his name, rabies tag and your cell phone number since you will not be at home.

-Keep your pet’s records handy. Create a file for each pet that contains health history, vaccination dates and a recent photo. Keep the file in a safe and secure place.

-Research animal-friendly places. Know where you can take your pet in the event of an emergency. Evacuation shelters and pet-friendly hotels outside a 60-mile radius of your home are good places to start.

-Stock up on emergency supplies. Keep extra leashes, bowls, newspapers, trash bags, cat litter, litter pans and at least a five-day supply of pet food and water on hand. Be sure you have a pet first aid kit as well.

-Get a carrier. Have a properly-sized pet carrier for each pet. Carriers should be large enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably.

-Communicate your plan. Make sure that the other people you rely on for your pet’s care, like your pet sitter, are privy to your specific pet-care plan in case you are away from home when a disaster strikes.

“A study from the American Veterinary Medical Association that claims only 22% of lost dogs who enter shelters are reunited with their humans. However, that percentage jumped up to over 52% for dogs who had microchips.”

Keeping our 4-legged friends safe and sound! Here are three benefits of microchipping your pet🐾:
1. Identification; microchips can easily identify lost pets
2. Medical records; In the case of an emergency, microchip databases store medical records and history
3. Lasts a lifetime; microchips are permanent, and your pet will only need one once!

I appreciate your business! 😊🐾

It's National Small Business Week, and we want to send a big THANK YOU to professional pet-sitting and dog-walking business owners who provide such a valuable service and are vital parts of our communities.

While using an app to find a pet sitter or dog walker may seem like a quick, convenient way to secure pet care, Pet Sitters International encourages pet parents to seek out the services of a ⭐local, professional pet-sitting or dog-walking business.⭐

Not only does working directly with a local pet-care business help you avoid the “middleman” and put more money into your local economy (apps/third-party sites typically take a portion of your pet-care fee), you are also able to ensure you are working with a pet-care professional that has insurance customized for the care they offer and has taken advantage of continuing education to ensure they are offering quality care.

Looking for a professional pet sitter or dog walker?

Some questions to ask include:

✔Does your business have the proper business license or permit, if required by your state/city/province?
✔Do you have pet-sitter liability insurance that covers the services you provide?
✔Are you able to show proof of a recent background check?
✔Do you use a pet-sitting services agreement that will detail the services we agree to?
✔Are you a Certified Professional Pet Sitter® and/or have you taken advantage of pet-care training such as pet first aid or classes on animal behavior and safety?

Members of Pet Sitters International have access to ongoing resources and training to ensure they stay up to date on the latest pet care and business best practices.

We've all been there... catching your dog or cat drinking from the toilet. Is it safe?

Toilet bowls harbor bacteria and can contain toxic chemicals left over from household cleaners—which pose a danger to our pets. In this article, our experts explain why it's unsafe for pets to drink from the toilet bowl, and how to stop this behavior.

Did you know? April is Pet First Aid awareness month! I personally obtained my first aid certification for pets and I carry a pet first aid kit with me to all of my client's homes. Some situations require immediate assistance before you can bring your pet to the vet. My belief is that you can never be too prepared.

Also, researchers at the University of Harvard in Cambridge, MA, suggest that dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease."

“January typically has some of the coldest days of the year, so what better way to stay warm and reap the health benefits of cuddling on National Cuddle Up Day? Whether it's a three-dog night (a night so cold it takes three dogs to cuddle up with to stay warm) or only slightly chilly, there are multiple benefits to cuddling with a human or canine, or other pet.”
