Let’s talk about the dental procedure at our facility! If your pet is coming in for a preventative dental cleaning or because of a dental issue, the procedure will be performed under anesthesia. We start with giving some pre-sedative pain and relaxation medication, and place an IV catheter. They are then given a sedative medication to transition into general anesthesia and intubated in order to protect their airway. The scaling then follows and full dental radiographs are obtained in order to get a good sense of the tooth roots health and jaw line. At this time, if everything looks great, the teeth will be polished and the procedure will be done; if anything is of concern the doctor will speak with the you, the owner, and together work on a plan for extractions. At the end, a final scaling is performed along with the polish to finish out the procedure. Check out these before and after pictures!

Dental disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats — by the time your pet is 3 years old, they will likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as they get older if preventative measures aren’t taken. Early detection and treatment is critical, dental disease doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth — we can see kidney, liver, and heart problems associated with bad dental health. Regular brushing or dental products like water additives, toys, or treats/some food can help stave off disease, but the best and most curative way of treating dental disease is a routine thorough cleaning and evaluation performed under anesthesia.

Important information about avian flu.

Experts at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine have provided a resource page for pet owners and the general public on highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (H5N1).

Recently, H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Experts recommend that pet owners discontinue raw pet diets, and limit pet access to wild birds and raw milk.

Refer to this page for updates, recommendations and more information on this evolving H5N1 outbreak: https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/baker-institute/research-baker-institute/h5n1-avian-influenza-bird-flu

Happy 13th Birthday to our unofficially official hospital manager (cat) Bello!! He has the very important job of looking after the staff and the patients and he does it very well. He came to Dr. McCann as an underweight sick cat in 2017 with very severe stomatitis, and needed full mouth extractions if he wanted to survive. He was surrendered to Dr. McCann, she took ALL of his teeth out, and now he lives his BEST life with all of his girls and puts up with all of our antics 🩷 We love him very much, happy birthday Bello! 🐈 🐾
