Feeding raw meat diets or raw milk to cats is popular, but it may be dangerous. Please consider carefully before feeding raw or freeze-dried treats!

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

Don't forget - human food and your furry friends don't mix well! Specific things to avoid:
1. Bones - especially when cooked, they can splinter and cause perforations of the GI tract but bird bones in general also are "pointy." Ham bones can also get stuck in their throat or stomach and cause a blockage.
2. Fat and drippings - just don't do it! These can lead to pancreatitis, which can be deadly.
3. Unbaked bread - this can swell in their stomachs and cause deadly bloat.
4. Uncooked meat - for the obvious reasons and can cause GI upset or bloating.
5. Ham - ham is extemely salty and can cause GI upset or pancreatitis due to high fat content.
6. Stuffing - can contain garlic and high amounts of salt.
7. Mashed taters and gravy - gravy is high in fat!
8. Alcohol - dogs can't process alcohol like humans can and it can be deadly.
9. As always - grapes and raisins - these are toxic.
10. Any desserts containing chocolate, xylitol as an artificial sweetener, or nuts (several nuts are toxic, so avoidance is best!).

While we hope you have had a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend, please take a moment as it winds down to remember the men, women, and service animals who have served and died for our country. Although the ball games and barbecues are awesome, these brave service people and animals are the reason we are free.

As you and your pets become more active with the nice weather, consider what you would do if there is an emergency with your pet!

Did you know that the Red Cross makes a "Pet First Aid" app for you phone with tons of great tips for a cat or dog emergency? Although it won't replace seeing your veterinarian, you can at least begin to treat an emergency while you're waiting to hear back from them or if you are unable to get to the clinic quickly.

In the app, you can create profiles for your pets. It even has some great dog training tips available.

PS: For those human members of your family, there is also a First Aid for humans app available - if you are certified, you can enter your user information but if you are not, you can access a lot of great information as a guest user.
