With many questions circling about the new canine respiratory illness, we wanted to take a moment to share what we know thus far. We are citing information from reliable industry sources, including the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association.

According to these sources no causative agent has been identified yet (the assumption is viral). There have been NO confimed cases in Ohio at this time. It has been officially or anecdotally reported in 12 states to date. Cases in Oregon (where it possibly originated) have followed 3 general clinical symptoms:

- Chronic mild to moderate tracheabronchitis (think coughing and other respiratory issues) with prolonged duration (6-8 weeks). Minimal or not responsive to antibiotics.
- Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics
- Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.

We want to remind our clients the importance of keeping your pets up to date on their vaccines and having your pet seen right away if they show any signs of the above symptoms. While it is unknown at this time how this illness is transmitted, it does seem to be contagious between dogs. Therefore, limiting your dog's exposure to other dogs, especially situations that put your dog in close contact with multiple dogs, may be beneficial.

This has not affected our daycare, boarding and grooming being open at this time.

As new information unfolds, we will be sure to pass that information along.
