Best goat advice ever!

Some hard truths for goat breeders. Especially new ones. I keep seeing the same s**t over and over. This is nothing new folks. I get it. It’s summer. We are all hot, tired and pissy.

1. The market is cyclical. what goes up must come down. What goes down must come up. You either stick with it, or you quit.

2. You will lose money. Probably for several years at the beginning. We are all one bad drought or one bad vet bill or one dead tractor away from losing $$ or having to sell something beloved to make ends meet.

3. Yes. I know you paid $2000 for that kid. You will not get $2000 for his offspring, you probably won’t even get $1000 for his offspring. Your herdname is brand new. No one has ever heard of it. You are not proven. You don’t have a line. You are breeding 2 big name goats together and hoping for the best. Sometimes it works. Oftentimes it doesn’t.

4. Rome was not built in a day. Neither will your herd be. It will take YEARS. Decades. More $$, blood, sweat and tears than you can imagine. You will f**k up and lose entire years worth of does because the buck you picked didn’t work and you had to back track. That doesn’t mean you sell his daughters to some newbie. It means you pull their papers and sell as pets or eat them.

5. Your herdname means everything.

6. Never, ever forget there is a human who loves that animal. People will ask you to critique their goats. Be honest but be kind. Every goat has one good attribute you can pick out. If you cannot do that politely decline to give your opinion (y’all wouldn’t believe who taught me that).

7. The pet market exists because of us. Because most of us don’t have the balls to eat our own goats. So what to do with culls? Pull papers and sell as pets. IF you are not a terminal herd you are contributing to the pet trade. Do not sell them on one hand and look down your nose with the other. The pet market is not your market until you need them and 99% of us will need them at some point. if the pet trade is stealing your sales look to your own herd to figure out the problem.

8. Goats are versatile animals. Nigerians in particular. People breed them for different reasons with different goals. The breeder of 30+ years is at a different place with their herd than the breeder of 10 years. Some people enjoy milk test, some people enjoy showing, some people enjoy homesteading. Some people just enjoy cute little goats. There is nothing wrong with any of these goals. I promise your goals will change with the years. I guarantee it. Don’t belittle people with different goals who are in a different place than you. There is no wrong reason to keep goats.

9. Goat breeding is HARD. You will bury your best friends and your greatest accomplishments. This part does not get easier. Ever.

10. Be kind damn it. It doesn’t cost a thing.

Onyx is growing so fast! Working with her has made me realize how much I miss having foals around. Bella is technically due July 3rd, but I don’t think she’s going to make that date. Foal watch has begun on her. Kevlar is also growing again. She’s not a fan of her training sessions; But boy does she have a great mindset! So willing to do what I ask! I can’t blame her with this week’s heat wave.

Onyx is doing great! She is almost a week old. She’s such a cutie and I could watch her for hours.

English Shepherd. (noun.)
A type of farm collie, a herding breed found in the United States. A working farm dog beloved by their family. The heartbeat of the homestead.
See also: Shadow Shepherd

English Shepherds are one of the most special breeds I have found. They are a historical breed. The type of dog often seen in a black and white photograph of your great grandfather’s farm. They are rooted in tradition and kept alive by small farms and homesteads scattered acrossed the county.

They aren’t a flashy breed. Not quite as sporty as Mals and Whippets, and not quite as natural or tight eyed as Borders in herding. But they are one of the most well rounded breeds I know. They are very nice moderate, mid level working dogs that hit the balance of work/home life flawlessly. They are able to hang with you for a 10 mile mountain trek, be trained to compete at the highest level in disc, but are also very effortless to live with. They aren’t dogs you have to “wear out” during the day in order to be able to enjoy them in the evening. And that I find incredibly valuable for the average American family, or weekend warriors dog sports person like myself ✌️

They are incredibly special in their intuition and communication. They have almost human like communication and eye contacts. They can read people and situations better than any other breed I have seen. They are a very engaged and handler focused breed. This makes them very easy to train and bind deeply with. They love nothing more than pleasing and working for their person. They are very bright and learn incredibly fast. They learn in a very scholastic and methodical way. This makes them great Trick Dogs, Demo Dogs, and amazing at Rally and Obedience.

Many lines are avid fetchers and therefore make great disc and doc dogs. They don’t have the same pressure sensitivity that many herding breeders have because of their loose eyed herding style. This translates to sports in that teach a hand off is normally effortless.

Historically, they are invaluable to homesteaders who need a dog that can move herds of cattle, sheep, and goats when needed but double as livestock guardians and overall farm managers. As farm mangers they have been bred to observe and learn the routines and the status quo, and then maintain it independently. They keep all the animals in their normal spaces, protect against predators, and enjoy sunning themselves will watching flocks graze. They are also bred for vermin eradication. Killing off moles, mice, and raccoons in a barn is a natural pass time for them. And because of this they make very good barn hunt and nosework dog.

There are cons with the breed. They are ‘keep the status quo’ type dogs. This means without proper socialization they aren’t very adaptive to changes in routine, location, and company. If they aren’t brought up with guests coming over, they will assume guests coming over are invaders and a threat to the family and farm. If they aren’t socialized in public from a young age, they can be shy with new people and dogs because it is different than the status quo. Like many other herding breeds, they can be sensitive and hyper aware of sounds, movements, textures ect. These can be challenging for newcomers to the breed and herding group in general.

Symphony was raised from an early age going out in public, meeting and greeting new dogs and new people, eating dinner on patios out with the family, and guests coming over to the house. So none of these things are a problem for us. The first 4 months of a pups life is the “crucial socialization period”. During this time it is imperative that you have many guest over and take your pup out in public, to parks, stores, and/or restaurants multiple times a week.

The two most unique things about the breed however, are their built in off switch and their human like bond with their person.

Almost all have a very nicely built in off switch and are incredibly easy house dogs. They are very rule oriented and because of this are very reliable. They love learning and following rules, enforcing rules, and being right. Symphony has been trust worthy alone in the house for my long nursing shifts at the hospital since she was 6 months old. Nothing is ever messed up or out of place. She is a very tidy and thoughtful dog. She also will walk in an off leash heel very naturally and has a very reliable recall. They are incredibly reliable and easy family members.

They bond extremely closely with their people. They know their person so well and can tell in an instant if anything is wrong with the family or the farm. Their eyes have a way of staring straight into your soul. Many first time ES owners comment on most on this nature of the ES. They are soul touching dogs that are most fulfilled as the very heartbeat of their family and farm.

The English Shepherd.

8 Surprising Goat Milk Health Benefits:

The health benefits of goat milk include its ability to protect against weight loss, reduce inflammation, optimize digestion, improve the bioavailability of nutrients, strengthen bones, boost heart health, strengthen immunity, increase metabolism, prevent toxins from accumulating in the body, and benefit the overall health. This article talks about human benefits, but these same benefits also relate to our pets consuming raw goat milk.

1.) Builds Strong Bones. Milk of all varieties is rich in calcium, and goat milk is no exception. Goat milk gives you a comparable amount of calcium as cow milk without many side effects, ensuring that the calcium deposits stay rich and stable and helping to prevent osteoporosis.

2.) Anti-inflammatory Properties. One reason why people tend to love goat milk is that they are able to enjoy it without the inflammation and upset stomach that cow milk often causes. This is due to the unique enzymatic makeup of goat milk that soothes inflammation in the gut.

3.) Nutrient Uptake Efficiency. One of the main benefits of goat milk is that the chemical composition is far closer to human milk than cow milk. Human milk is similar to goat milk, so our bodies are able to get more nutrients out of the milk as it moves through our system and it causes less stress on our digestive processes.

4.) Metabolism Booster. Goat milk is far more nutrient-dense than cow milk, which means that you don't need as much of it to receive the same (or better) nutrient intake. A single cup provides nearly 40% of our daily calcium requirements, 20% of vitamin B intake, as well as significant amount of potassium and phosphorous. Furthermore, studies have shown that goat milk can help to increase the uptake of iron and copper in our digestive tract, which is essential for people who struggle with anemia and other deficiencies.

5.) Protects the Heart. There are nearly twice as many beneficial fatty acids in goat milk as can be found in cow milk, which means that our cholesterol balance is safe if it is consumed. By balancing our essential fatty acids in the body, we can prevent atherosclerosis, stroke, heart attack, and other coronary complications. The high potassium levels in goat milk also help to reduce blood pressure, as potassium is a vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels and relieves tension in the cardiovascular system.

6.) Boosts Immunity. Cow milk contains trace amounts of selenium, but there are significant amounts found in goat milk. This rare mineral is a key component in the immune system functionality, protecting us from illness and fending off infections.

7.) Growth and Development. Goat milk is a very rich source of protein, which is an essential part of growth and development, as proteins are the building blocks of cells, tissue, muscle and bone. By ensuring a steady stream of protein, we protect our metabolic processes, stimulate growth and overall health.

8.) Weight Loss. Although goat milk has more fatty acids than cow milk, it actually has less "bad" fat, which means that it can help people lose weight, without compromising on their nutritional needs.
