When you get a kitten from Emmers Scottish Folds you know that the parents aren't over bred. Some "breeders" think it is OK to breed a queen 2-3 times (or more) per year, but WE DO NOT. The health and safety of our queens is far more important than mass producing kittens. Our queens are bred once per year, if that, and they are of an appropriate breeding age. That means they will not be bred when
they are still kittens because we feel it is unacceptable for babies to be having babies. Our queens are fully mature and since folds tend to mature slower they may be
1 1/2 years of age before we even think about breeding. All of our breeding cats are tested as PKD negative through a DNA test and we will gladly share those results with you. They also see a board certified cardiologist to be HCM screened yearly (starting at 1 year of age) by echocardiogram. Once a DNA test for HCM is developed for folds we will do that (unfortunately this will be slow going because not many fold breeders are sending echo results with DNA samples to the feline geneticists). Our studs and our queens both will be out showing before being bred. We feel that we should only be breeding the best cats which usually means your show cats. We focus our program on bettering the breed and the only way to do that is to use studs and queens who fit the breed standard. As for the kittens we are responsible for bringing into this world-we will not "pull" them from mom until they are ready. This is very individualized and because of this we will not let our kittens go until they are 16 weeks of age. This means you will know that you are getting a kitten with a stronger immune system, properly socialized (many kitten behaviors are learned between 8-12 weeks so sending a kitten home at 10 weeks they won't have fully developed social skills) and will be altered. Because our main focus is on the health of our cats we keep few breeding cats. The more cats in a household the more stress they have and the less individual attention they receive. With fewer breeding cats than most breeders, and with only breeding our girls once a year at most we don't have many litters so yes we do have a waiting list. We do apologize that it may take longer for you to get your perfect kitten but you can be confident that when your kitten comes home you are getting a kitten from a place that is dedicated to the breed and breeding the PROPER way!
