I hope everyone in the OKC Metro area is okay from last night. It looks like we are in for round 2 today and round 3 tomorrow. I know, it's not Spring time. I thought it would be a good reminder for theses tips.

You might be weather prepared, but are your pets? It is just as important to make sure they are safe and have the necessities they may need in case of an emergency. Here is a run down on what is a must for your pets in a weather emergency:

1. Identification: This is HUGE! You dog, cat, ferret, bird, horse etc. need to have some type of identification on them. Preferably permanent such as a microchip (registered and updated) or tattoo. But even just having their collars on with current name and number is better than nothing. So many animals are lost or misplaced after a natural disaster. After the Big tornado in May 2013 I personally saw hundreds of animals lost and looking for their homes because they did not have any type of ID. Get your animals microchipped. Put a collar with your information on it. It doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to do the job. My dogs all have "tornado" collars they wear in the spring. It has their names, my info and they are water proof and are bright collars for visibility.

2. Bag with the essentials: Its good for your pet to have a "go bag" for them with food (enough for 3 days) Water, any medications and maybe some treats. Put a food/water bowl in there, extra leashes, medical records like vaccine paperwork and a blanket. Have this in an area that is easy to grab or put it next to your "go bag" or in your shelter. If you home is damaged or you are not able to get back to you home after a disaster then having these essentials will make life a little easier and you will have to worry about one less thing.

3. Leash/Carrier: If there is an emergency you need to be able to get your pet where they need to go. Have them on a leash or in a carrier so you have control of them and they don't run off. Dogs and cats will get scared just like us in storms and their natural instinct is to run away and hide. If you know storms are coming go ahead and put them on a leash or in their carriers so it is one less thing to think about.

4. Muzzle: This may be a weird item to think about but it can add some safety to your "hidey hole". When dogs get scared and stressed out they can bite. Put them in a storm shelter with other people and animals in a tense situation and they could bite if stressed to much. Having a basket muzzle for your dog or putting them in a carrier can keep them safe and you as well. Teach them to wear it positively and its just another normal thing to wear. All of my dogs know how to wear a muzzle just in case we are in a situation where they are jammed in a cellar with other dogs or people and there is a storm above us.

5. Have a plan: If a tornado or severe storm is coming what is your plan with your animals? Do they have a safe spot? Will they come down in the storm shelter with you? Is there room for them? Can they go down on their own? If not can you physically lift them up and down in the storm shelter? If that is not an option where else in the house can they go? I love animals and my dogs are my babies and part of my family. But if it means choosing between them in a shelter and other people I will find a safe place for them elsewhere. So I have a plan in advance. Put them in their kennel or carrier in a closet, bathroom or hallway in the middle of the house. Put pillows or a small mattress over the kennel. Sometimes cats can be safer if they find their own place to hide. Dogs not so much. Make sure they have their Identification on them. We also now have much more warning about severe weather. Go ahead and put them in their safe spot before the weather hits. That way you aren't fighting to catch them and put them there when the storm is hitting.

Just like every Okie knows, its good to have a plan. Make sure that plan includes your pets. I have my dogs ready for today and will be keeping my eye on the sky. Tell me how you and your pets are staying safe and prepping for nasty weather.
Stay safe everyone!
