I normally don’t share many personal things on here, but I do feel compelled this time.

Saturday was almost the worst day of my life, but God intervened again…
In the early evening, Apollo started retching and only foam was coming out. I examined his stomach and he was bloated.. my worst nightmare was coming true. I rushed him to the ER thinking it was bloat/GDV, as it is very common in Danes. The vet said it was worse - a mesenteric torsion, which is where the intestines somehow wrap themselves around the mesenteric root and cutoff the blood supply. She said the only two options were surgery (30-50% survival rate for the surgery itself) or euthanasia. At first, I was going to have the surgery done, but after thinking about it, I didn’t want to put my 11.5 year old boy through that, as if he did make it through the surgery, recovery would be rough. They wanted to euthanize him there, but I just couldn’t- I wanted my family and Bender to be able to say goodbye and to just have as much time as I could have with him. They said he definitely wouldn’t make it to the morning and if he wasn’t euthanized, the passing wouldn’t be pleasant. I had them give him an 8 hour pain injection and we headed home.
I reached out to 4 different vets to see if they could come to my house to do an in-home euthanasia and not one responded. I was extremely irritated, as I wanted him to go peacefully, but I didn’t know Gods plan.
I stayed by his side all night and just cried and cried thinking about how life would be without him and mourning him before he was even gone. Well, by the grace of God, he made it to the morning and didn’t present any signs of pain— I couldn’t believe it.. yet, another miracle! Since then, he’s been eating, drinking and having normal stools (I know, tmi), so I’m pretty sure he’s out of the woods.
I know he’s old, especially for a Dane, and that every day I have with him is a blessing. I know his day will come someday, but I’m glad it didn’t end like they said it would. This is all to say that there is power in prayer and I’m so thankful to God for more time with my dear Apollo.
