In light of the upcoming holiday weekend, we’d like to share some information on blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria.

🦠 Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria that is toxic to dogs. Debunking the common misconception, it is not an algae at all. It can be found in stagnant, slow moving, freshwater sources such as lakes and ponds.

🦠If you plan to be around water this weekend, please take note of the symptoms of cyanobacteria toxicity. If you suspect that your dog has cyanobacteria toxicity, it is an emergency, so seek veterinary care immediately.

🦠Our clinic will be closed from August 31st through September 2nd, but our emergency services will remain available. If you have an emergency during this time, please call our on-call veterinarian at 307-302-9989.

Mosquitoes are out and about! Due to the drastic increase of West Nile Virus detected in horses last year, we urge everyone to vaccinate horses against WNV and be aware of the symptoms.

🦟 In August of 2023, 24 equine cases of West Nile Virus were detected in Wyoming.

🦟 During that time frame, 10 Wyoming counties were affected, including 3 cases in Park County and 4 cases in Big Horn County.

🦟Only some of the affected horses had a fever.

🦟The most common symptoms shown in 2023 were neurological deficits. Including, but not limited to, generalized or hind-limb weakness, lethargy, incoordination, stumbling, muscle-twitching, and abnormal sensitivity to outside stimuli.

In the cases that we treated last year, the horses that received veterinary attention quickly had the best recovery time. It is extremely important that if you notice any neurological symptoms to seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY.

The best prevention is vaccination. Limit your horses exposure to mosquitoes as much as possible, use plenty of fly spray, and avoid stagnant water.

If you have any questions about West Nile Virus in horses, or to schedule an appointment to vaccinate your horses, please call us at 307-868-2440 OR message us on Facebook!

📣 We have a very exciting announcement! 📣
Jennifer Lewis with Rocking Horse Therapy & Rehabilitation will now be offering laser therapy services through our clinic!
📣What is laser therapy?
Laser therapy is a drug-free, surgery-free treatment that uses a beam of light to deeply pe*****te tissue. The laser energy is absorbed by the cells, initiating a chemical change that reduces pain, reduces inflammation, and speeds healing.
📣What are treatments like?
Treatment protocols are unique to each patient and the patients condition. For some conditions, a single treatment may be all that is required. For more chronic and difficult conditions, a series of treatment may be necessary to get the maximum benefit.
📣How are treatments administered?
The laser light is delivered to the affected area through a noninvasive hand piece. Many patients feel immediate relief, and are often calmed by the treatment. Human athletes receiving similar treatments report feeling a soothing warmth during treatment.
📣What conditions benefit from laser treatment?
All species can benefit from laser treatment: dogs, cats, horses, and even cattle! Laser treatment benefits conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon and suspensory injuries, back disorders, joint pain, wound healing, degenerative joint disease, and surgical incision healing.

To check pricing, book a laser therapy appointment, or to ask further questions, please call the clinic at 307-868-2440!

Update: Happy April Fools! Hopefully this sparked a few laughs today. In all seriousness… please don’t bring us any coyotes to treat 🫣 We would all like to keep our fingers.

FOUND: Mixed breed dog found on the side of HWY 120, just past the Meeteetse Creek turn off. We suspect that he/she was hit by a vehicle, no obvious injuries. No collar, we cannot get close enough to determine gender or assess the possible injuries. Very skittish and aggressive. We cannot get her out of the kennel she was brought in.
Please call the clinic at 307-868-2440 if you recognize this pup!

Here’s the answer to our pop quiz on Wednesday!
🛑The blood on the right is from the jugular vein, whereas the blood on the left is from the carotid artery. As the model shows, these are extremely close on a horse! The blood from the carotid artery is more oxygenated, making it appear a much brighter color.
🛑The common phrase used is: “If it’s pink, stop and think. If it’s red, go ahead”.
🛑Injecting medications into the carotid artery is extremely dangerous and within seconds of injection can cause seizures and even death.
🛑Of course, you should not rely solely on color. If you are questioning if your needle is in the carotid artery, leave the needle inserted and detach the syringe. If your needle is in the jugular, there will be a steady drip of blood. However, if your needle is in the carotid artery, the blood flow will be very fast and more stream-like. If you believe that you have hit the carotid, simply remove the needle, and hold pressure on the area for 10 minutes to prevent a hematoma.

We are quickly approaching warmer weather! While we are very much looking forward to some sunshine, the snakes are too. During the month of March, we are offering a 25% discount on all Rattlesnake vaccines!
FAQ:
How old does my dog have to be in order to receive the vaccine?
🐍Dogs must be at least 6 months old to receive this vaccine

Why get the Rattlesnake vaccine?
🐍The Rattlesnake vaccine does two things: Minimizes the damage of the Rattlesnake venom and slows the reaction time. The Rattlesnake vaccine is especially beneficial for those who live in rural areas and are farther from a Veterinarian.

What should I do if my dog gets bitten?
🐍If your dog does get bitten, immobilize them as much as possible and get them to a Veterinarian right away. Do not use a tourniquet on the area or try to suck the venom out.

To book an appointment with us to receive the discounted Rattlesnake vaccine please call one of the clinics.
