Dogs need the dentist too!

Signs of dental disease in your pet are:
🦷Bad breath
🦷Painful mouth
🦷Tarter build up on teeth (especially molars)
🦷Red inflamed gums
🦷Swollen lymph nodes in neck
🦷Reluctance to eat hard foods

It’s not just about aesthetics!
Dental disease can cause a variety of health problems in pets. Abscessed teeth can make a pet very sick. Extensive dental disease can even negatively impact the kidneys and heart.

The best method of treatment is prevention.
Pets that get annual dental cleanings are less likely to develop dental disease and an excess buildup of tartar. Dental disease that is not addressed often results in the pet needing teeth extracted.

Once tartar is hardened onto the enamel of the tooth, the only safe way to get rid of it is by getting a professional dental cleaning. Breaking this tartar off in other ways may cause further damage to your pets teeth and overall dental health. The best way to assess your pets dental health is to consult your veterinarian! They can accurately determine if your pet needs a dental, and how frequently they may need them in the future.

Arthritic change in horses is inevitable. Most horses will develop some level of arthritis as they age. There are a few different ways this can happen. The most common is the repetitive use of their joints over the years. Any horse with a job who gives their all every time we climb into the saddle is at risk. From barrel racers who fly around corners, a reiner who puts their horse through tricky maneuvers, to the everyday cow horse navigating tough terrain to bring the cows home. Some horses develop arthritis from an injury or infection sustained at some point in life. No matter what the cause, supporting health joint function and the comfort level of your equine friend is our priority.

💉There are things you can do to support the health of the existing cartilage and the joint. Starting joint supplements is always a good idea but joint injections are another good option to get your horse back up to competing level.

💉What is in the injection? These injections not only have medications to help decrease the inflammation or pain of these joints but also have a medication that slows the progression of arthritis in the joint.

💉How long do they last? It depends on the horse, Mild cases may only need an injection once per year, Severe cases may need them every 3 months.

Talk to your veterinarian about how severe the arthritis is in your horse to determine if joint injections are a good option for your equine partner.

In light of the upcoming holiday weekend, we’d like to share some information on blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria.

🦠 Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria that is toxic to dogs. Debunking the common misconception, it is not an algae at all. It can be found in stagnant, slow moving, freshwater sources such as lakes and ponds.

🦠If you plan to be around water this weekend, please take note of the symptoms of cyanobacteria toxicity. If you suspect that your dog has cyanobacteria toxicity, it is an emergency, so seek veterinary care immediately.

🦠Our clinic will be closed from August 31st through September 2nd, but our emergency services will remain available. If you have an emergency during this time, please call our on-call veterinarian at 307-302-9989.
