Working on horses these days might consist of me using baby talk with the horses and saying โ€œwhoaโ€ to my baby, but it all works.

So I canโ€™t tell you how many people messaged me about Summer and Apollo, ๏ฟผ Iโ€™m not sure how this even became a question but yes, she runs him barefoot! Fun fact she trims him most of the time herself too. ASNY has very good hard feet too never ever needed shoes, so I hope this answers your questions ๐Ÿค—

TURNOUT: A CURE ALL?

In my experience, the short answer is no. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Hear me out. Turnout time is widely thought to be a magical process, where if enough patience is used, a horse will come back out of the pasture cured of all ailments.

Will your horse come back from turnout time with a renewed energy due to rest, play, longer access to feed, and a mental break? Will it give the body time to recover muscles, heal tendon stresses, and relieve abscesses? Of course!

But will turnout time cure him of any bodily tension? No. They do not somehow fix themselves in the pasture, no matter how long they are turned out.

As a general rule, if you turn a horse out with one issue, it is likely to come back with more issues due to months of compensation.

People that try to cure bodily tension with turnout time find that their horse is โ€œbetterโ€ upon returning to work, but they quickly go back to their former state of discomfort and hindered ability.

The best course of action going into winter is to have your horses worked before turning them out. Your mind can rest easy knowing that they are not worsening any unaddressed problems while enjoying their winters off.

A different disciplineโ€™s perspective, but still relevant! It is my belief that improper posture and a kissing spine diagnosis CAN be directly linked.

COLLECTION TO COMBAT KISSING SPINES

Kissing spines seems to be the lameness du jour these days. Iโ€™ve seen a bunch of posts and articles on the subject lately. Here are a couple of my observations. Nobody in those posts talks about training proper collection by engagement of the hindquarters. Most only mention lowering the head/neck. The thoracic sling is not, does not, and can not lift up the front end of the horse. Thatโ€™s the job of the hindquarters.

I was blessed to know and work with a legend in the industry. I'm even more honored to have the opportunity to write a tribute to his life. Thank you for everything, Bill.

Bill Hackett rode saddle horses that bucked so often that his kids grew used to picking up all the items in the sagebrush that fell out of his shirt pockets: a tally book, sunglasses, smoking...

We loved watching Kaycee work on a mare to relieve her of a headache. She has a natural born touch with horses and has worked on hundreds of them. Read her story in the latest issue of RITW, on stands now.

I am very honored to have my work and story featured in the current edition of Raised In The West Magazine.

After telling Cyd that my story was not that exciting, she insisted on stopping by to watch me work on a horse post-branding in June.

Sometimes, the daily grind of work makes us forget how exceptionally blessed we are. What may appear to us horse people and cowboys to be โ€œjust another dayโ€ is something out of a movie for others. This outsiderโ€™s perspective gave me a renewed gratitude.

Iโ€™m grateful for Godโ€™s gifts: work, horses, beautiful country, and most importantly, the people I get to be around. Iโ€™m blessed because of folks like you, who call me to help your horses reach their full potential. My life IS a dream, and Iโ€™m happy to have been reminded of that ๐Ÿฅฐ

P.S. the countdown is on for babyโ€™s arrival in a couple weeks. Not to rush anything, but Iโ€™m excited to be back ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’•

Kaycee Monnens Cortner doesnโ€™t remember life before horses, and she canโ€™t imagine life without them now. She started riding as a two-year-old on her parentsโ€™ ranch, picking up a natural aptitude as she grew. Years later, sheโ€™s so in tune with horses she has made a career performing equine bo...

Wellโ€ฆ that happened fast! ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿผ All of a sudden, weโ€™re at 30 weeks, itโ€™s getting harder to tie my shoes, and this little girl is growing like a w**d. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Iโ€™ve officially decided to hit pause on equine bodywork until after her arrival. Thank you so much to all of my clients this spring, whoโ€™ve been patient through bathroom and snack breaks, and been so encouraging. My body felt great throughout working, and I am so grateful for an active and safe pregnancy!

Since Iโ€™ve never done this before, itโ€™s hard to say! I know Iโ€™ll never stop working on horses (because yโ€™all wonโ€™t let me๐Ÿ˜‚), and I wouldnโ€™t want to. It may just look a little different: impromptu babysitting, planning days at handy locations, and hauling to me are all great options that might make things easier with a babe. Iโ€™ll be listening to my body and familyโ€™s needs postpartum to decide when to come back.

Motherhood is a wonderful gift, and I donโ€™t take that for granted. I canโ€™t wait to fulfill this role that God has given me โค๏ธ

In the meantime, Iโ€™ll still be posting educational content on Cavvy Savvy and on this page, so stay tuned for that! If any of you have questions, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out. Pray for us! โ˜บ๏ธ
