HOW you take them out is just as important in order to establish the first simple rule: WHERE to pee! 💦. The very first thing you should do when arriving home with your new puppy is take to them to their bathroom spot. Here’s the step-by-step: 1 . CARRY your puppy inside, do not put them down, go right back outside through the door you plan to use for potty breaks. 2. CARRY them to the designated spot in your yard and placethem down.*Pro Tip: Do not put them down or try to have them follow you until you’ve reached the designated area or they WILL have an accident on the way. 3. When they go, it’s a “Potty Party!”🎉 Immediately praise and reward them! Use positive reinforcement by saying something like “Yes! Go Potty!” and give them lots of pets, love and attention right after they finish. This makes a clear connection between going potty and receiving rewards. 4. Let them explore the yard for a few minutes. Don’t rush back inside-puppies might hold it next time to avoid ending outdoor play immediately. Teaching them where to go first thing and rewarding them immediately for doing it correctly creates a strong potty training foundation and gets things off on the right foot. #newpuppyparents #newpuppytips #puppypottytraining #cavapoopuppy #minigoldendoodlepuppy #cavapoobreeder #puppylife

This might be one of my most asked questions! We begin potty training all our puppies starting at 3-4weeks old using artificial turf mats. By the time they go to their forever families at 8 weeks they are indoor potty trained, and also well on their way to pottying consistently outside as well. Why artificial turf? After trying everything from pee pads to grated litter boxes we found artificial turf to be the ideal option. Not only can we move it from room to room as needed, it’s not messy, the puppies won’t shred it like pee pads/newspaper nor does it smell as bad (iykyk) and it helps with the transition to using real grass outside. ✨Bonus: it also can be used during bad weather for any age dog when it’s not safe to go outside. To clean and disinfect, we use the Wysiwash system which attaches to our hose; spray each side thoroughly making sure any 💩 is removed; hang to dry in the sun. There are also other artificial turf cleaners on the market, specifically formulated to pet waste, such as Simple Green and EcoStrong. Have questions about how we potty train or our turf system? You wouldn’t leave a 1yr old human baby unsupervised, why would you leave a puppy unsupervised?? -Puppies do not have the ability to distinguish what is okay for them to play with. They don’t know it’s NOT okay to chew the kids’ shoes, your new couch, pee on your rug or to chase the cat! -Whatever you do, do not give them full reign of the house. You’ll be setting them up for failure. -Instead invest in a playpen, gates or better yet, crate train them and have them earn freedom. These simple accessories will prevent puppies from getting to things that are off limits, from going potty on your expensive rug and possibly from accidentally harming themselves. -If they do end up with something they shouldn’t have, distract puppies with things that they CAN play with and away from doing things they shouldn’t be doing. -It’s YOUR job to show them what’s ok and teach them the rules and boundaries that will keep them and your house safe. And until they can show you with their choices and behavior, freedom should be limited. #cavapoopuppy #cavapoobreeder #newpuppyparents #newpuppysurvivalguide #newpuppy #dogmomlife
Puppies need sleep - lots of it, just like babies. Like excitable toddlers, puppies are growing and learning at a fast rate, and just as a lack of sleep has a bad effect on a child’s behavior, your puppy will exhibit less than desirable behavior if he doesn’t get enough sleep. Your puppy will need a whopping 18-19 hours sleep in every 24! 🤯 So only expect 4 to 5 hours of being awake and only about 30min to an hour at a time. If they’re kept awake and playing, you could both be heading for a stressful time. Here are 5 signs to look out for to know when your puppy needs a rest: 1. Nipping and biting - Puppies explore the world and express themselves with their mouths. When they are too tired to focus on other ways to express themselves, they turn to nipping and biting. 2. No longer listening - Just as kids get defiant when they are too tired, so do puppies. So if your dog suddenly ignores cues that they usually master, it may mean they’re overtired. 3. Hyperactivity/inability to settle - After a certain amount of time without sleep, the hormone cortisol kicks in. Cortisol provides a “second wind” of energy, but also makes it difficult to calm down. 4. Chewing - Similar to dogs who don’t get enough activity and stimulation, dogs that don’t get enough rest can engage in destructive behaviors like chewing. If your new shoes look like you went for a run on a cheese grater and your dog is the culprit, they may need more rest. 5. Excessive barking - Since overtired puppies can’t settle down, they will look to you (or other people/animals) to continue interacting with them. They may bark excessively to get the attention of someone who will keep the playtime going.
Betcha didn’t know puppies are born deaf AND blind! Puppies are born with their eyelids and ear canals closed to protect their delicate eyes and ears that aren’t quite done developing. A pup’s eyelids open when they are about 2 weeks old. But their sight isn’t fully functional just yet; their eyes still need a little time to develop, so you might look like a fuzzy blob to them. Their ear canals open around three weeks of age, allowing them to hear for the first time. Those tongue trills get them every time! 🙂For those first 2-3 weeks they rely on their sense of smell to help them find their way around — although as newborns, the only thing they’re interested in finding is mom and her milk. To do this, puppies use their vomeronasal organ (also called Jacobson’s organ) to detect pheromones from mom. Pheromones are chemical signals that are released into the environment as a method of communicating with other dogs. The vomeronasal organ, which is tucked into the bottom of the nasal cavity and just above the roof of the mouth, is thought to be involved in communications related to parental (e.g., Where’s my mom?), social (e.g., Who peed on the fence?) and reproductive (e.g., Which female is in heat?) situations. Pretty amazing huh? Now go astonish your family, coworkers and friends with how smart you are! 😉. #puppyfacts #themoreyouknow #cavapoopuppy #toycavapoo #cavapoobreeder #newpuppyadventures #newpuppyparents #natureisamazing #cavapoo #minigoldendoodle
