Uh oh. The plant inspector has arrived. Thankfully, these baby Mulberry trees got Tiny’s stamp of approval.

The grapes are on the vine! I am so pleased. This is the first year they have held fruit. There are three varieties. One is supposedly bronze, the other purple. The last vine has the largest fruit and clusters and is called Southern Home. I’ve been anxious to taste that one for nearly 10 years since I learned of it. A hybrid muscadine variety, its fruit are said to be the closest to a table grape but with full muscadine flavor.

I’ve carefully bagged all the fruit to keep birds and squirrels and bugs from stealing them.

I have the best memories of picking sun ripened grapes from my great grandfather’s vines and listening to him tell us about all his different varieties. We ate them fresh, turned them into jelly, and he made wine with them. There is nothing that mimics the taste or rich fragrance of muscadines in the summer.

Had to snap this photo of these Oklahoma zinnias while I was florist-ing. I am head over heels for them! I was a whole garden row of the ombré pink. What is neat about zinnias much like roses is that while the overall plant can produce flowers of uniform color, they can also throw a “sport”—a flower that is unique from its siblings. In roses, this is one of the ways new varieties come to be. Cuttings of the “sport” are taken and rooted to make a new variety. There ya go! Your lesson in horticulture for the day paired with a pretty picture 🌺 🪴

A monarch soon to emerge. He attached himself to a seed starting tray in a terrible spot. I brought him in to give him a safe place to emerge. Then back outside he goes. This warm winter has kept the monarchs breeding nearly all through the season. They only paused for a couple weeks in January.

The subtropics and tropics white potato: Cassava! This incredibly hardy and productive plant grows from hardwood cuttings stuck directly in the ground. After about 9 months, you dig up the roots, dust them off, peel them (the skin easily comes off in one thick peel) cut in half to reveal the skinny, stiff, fibrous core, slice that off, then cube your root. They must be boiled for 10min or until fork tender, then you can cook them longer to make mashed potatoes or move them to the oven to roast them, or let them air dry for a few minutes and fry them to make incredibly crispy, starchy home fries. Growing cassava is so easy. You just have to give it some room, water, and a bunch of compost when you plant. This big batch of the Togo variety from will be parboiled then frozen for future use. It makes excellent fries straight outta the freezer.

Getting the garden ready for Spring flowers: Step 4) Plant cover crops. Whether you are rolling your garden, not tilling, or planting in a raised bed, cover crops are a useful tool to rejuvenate your soil. The right cover crops can take nitrogen from the air and restore it in their roots to feed the next crop. Some can kill pathogens and harmful nematodes. All enrich the soil web of life.

Getting ready for the Spring season: 3) Start lord of seeds! This is the first round of 375 plants. There will be successions of zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos in the coming weeks, but this is round 1.

Caterpillar ID wanted: In Central FL, found this guy in my house, probably from my backyard cut flowers. He seems to be in the geometrid family, but he has flower pieces stuck to his back and moves like a leaf blowing in the wind. Very cool. Would love help ID-ing him.
