🐾 Introducing Maize, our spirited nearly 2-year-old Golden Retriever! A few months back, Maize faced a challenge with right hindlimb lameness and was diagnosed with a cranial cruciate ligament rupture. She underwent a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) procedure here at the Veterinary Specialty Center and made an excellent recovery. However, shortly after resuming her playful activities, Maize encountered another hurdle with a left hindlimb lameness, leading to a second cruciate ligament tear.
Maize bravely underwent her second TPLO surgery, and we’re thrilled to report that she has bounced back beautifully, now completely lameness-free on both hindlimbs! 🤌

🛠️ Did You Know?
Cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs is often seen as a disease of the ligaments, rather than a result of trauma. While trauma-induced ruptures an happen, many dogs experience a gradual degeneration of the ligament, culminating in a full rupture. Research indicates that 50-60% of dogs who tear one cruciate ligament will eventually experience the same on the opposite side within two years. For Maize, this occurred within just a few months.

🔩 TPLO: The Gold Standard in Canine Surgery
Among the various techniques to repair the cruciate ligament, the TPLO procedure stands out as the best surgical option for many dogs. Dr. Gonzalez, a seasoned expert, has performed several hundred TPLO procedures using top-notch implant systems from Arthrex. With a wide array of implant sizes, Dr. Gonzalez has successfully performed this procedure on dogs ranging from 6 Ibs. to over 150 lbs.
Dr. Gonzalez ensures that each procedure is tailored to the dog’s unique needs.

Having a pet in need of surgery is never easy and choosing a surgeon can be daunting, however choosing a Boarded Surgeon maybe in your pet’s best interest. Do you research and ask questions before selecting whom performs your pet’s surgical procedure.

What’s the difference between a primary care vet and a specialist when it comes to surgery?

Any licensed veterinary should be able to perform routine surgical procedures however, some more advanced procedures require extensive knowledge, training and skills or require specialized equipment. Some veterinarians do further their knowledge by taking short training courses to perform certain types of specialized surgical procedures but they may not have the tools or the expertise to manage more complex surgical cases and this may result in a less than ideal outcome or in the need of revision surgery. Be wary of non-specialists who promote special interests or alternate certifications, there is no replacement for the training and experience that a boarded specialist has acquired!!!

Specialists are more likely to have access to advanced instruments, equipment, orthopedic implants and diagnostic tools. They have an adequate number of specially trained staff to care for and watch over animals undergoing surgery.

Imagine your child breaks a bone, and no matter how much you like and respect your family doctor, s/he wouldn’t do your child’s surgery. Your medical provider would recommend a credentialed and experienced orthopedic surgeon for the best possible result. The same should happen for companion animals.

What is a Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon? 🛠️🦴

Those wishing to specialize and become boarded surgeons must complete in-depth training consisting of a minimum of a 1-year rotating internship and often a second specialty surgical internship followed by a 3-year residency, which typically includes more than 1,000 general and orthopedic operations beyond that of a veterinary school graduate. Specialists must publish scientific research and pass a rigorous examination.

Academically, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) board certification represents the highest level of learning and clinical achievement in surgery. Only those who earned the Diplomate credential, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS), are board-certified surgeons and may represent themselves as specialists. 🤌

To our valued clients regarding COVID-19:
To ensure everyone's safety, we will be doing the following:

- Wiping down all surfaces, chairs, doorknobs in our examination · rooms between every
visit
- Sanitizing the lobby frequently
- Washing our hands thoroughly between every appointment and multiple times throughout
the day (we ask that you do the same)
- Asking clients not to crowd the lobby - depending on how busy we are at the time of
your arrival, we may ask you to wait outside or in your car until we can move you and
your pet directly into an exam room
- Asking clients not to crowd the reception desk - if another client is at the desk when you
are moved to reception to check out, we will request that you sit and wait for our
receptionist to call you to the counter when they are ready to assist you

Please do not hesitate to ask staff members about our COVID-19 precautions.
