A SQUIRREL WITH GOOD AIM MEANS BAD NEWS FOR THIS CAR OWNER
There are many ways in which an animal can damage your car. Find out how your auto policy can provide coverage.
The squirrel. So much cuteness in one tiny, furry nemesis. See how one real customer found out that they have uncannily accurate aim, too.
Q: We have some beautiful old trees in our neighborhood — and lots of critters that call them home. The bird droppings wash off, but my neighbor just found dents in the hood of her new car. She swears she saw a squirrel chucking pinecones at it. I don’t know if the squirrels in my yard have that kind of aim, but am I covered if they do?
We posed this question to Jeremy Jivan, a Farmers® agent in Barberton, Ohio, who has seen his share of damage caused by small animals. Here’s what his straightforward take on a squirrelly situation.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a squirrel pitching pinecones, but I do know that my customers are no strangers to animal encounters. They’re more common than you might think.
A few years back, a small animal (still unidentified) wiggled into a customer’s car and wreaked havoc on the interior. It was chewed, gnawed and clawed to shreds. Now, imagine the cost of replacing every inch of upholstery, carpeting and trim in your car. Fortunately, the customer had comprehensive coverage on his auto policy, so Farmers covered the damage. While coverage ultimately depends on the facts and circumstances of a claim, this optional coverage may provide coverage when you are faced with the inconvenient forces of nature, including pinecone-pitching squirrels, a goat stampede or a mouse that makes itself at home in your engine.

Comprehensive insurance also covers damage to your car that’s not the result of a collision with another vehicle or stationary object. That means you could be covered for damage like a rock cracking your windshield to a lightning strike that fries the electrical system. Even damage caused by your own pet is covered because, after all, animals will be animals.
Along with collision insurance, comprehensive can be a valuable additional coverage for your car. It’s optional in most states, but usually required by lenders and leasing companies. If you no longer carry collision on your car, you can still get comprehensive by itself.
Here are more examples of what comprehensive auto insurance may cover:
Theft, vandalism, riots
Wind, hail, floods, lightning
Hitting a deer or other animal
Damage caused by animals
Falling or flying objects
Fires and explosions
As you can see, there’s a reason we call it “comprehensive.” It often covers many things you would never think of, like squirrels fastballing pinecones.

If you are hearing noises coming from your attic it is probably either squirrels, rats or raccoons.

The best way to determine what unwelcome guests you have are by interpreting the sounds they make and the time of day or night you hear them.

If you are hearing sounds around sunrise and sunset, it could be squirrels. A fast pitter-patter in the middle of the night are most likely from rats. And if you hear loud scratching and thumping and bumping it could be a raccoon. In either case be cautious that now they have claimed your attic as home, and if you enter their home - they may be scared defensive. And if they have already had babies they become very protective. A full grown raccoon can weigh between 25 and 35 lbs. and are strong and aggressive if they are protecting a litter. Not something you want to meet face to face! Rats and squirrels are no picnic either. Best be safe and get the help of a professional.

For a detailed inspection of your home or business call James at Animals In The Attic Brevard for a free home inspection. He knows where to look and how to stop rodents from entering your home. And of course if you already know or suspect you have rats don't wait any longer.

Rats are smart and determined critters and they know how to exploit all the secret openings in your home. Typical home construction will keep the AC in and the rain out, but leaves holes and vulnerabilities in your home. All it takes is a opening the size of a quarter to let in a rat. And a mouse needs even less of a hole to get in!

They are usually looking for a safe place to have their babies. Warm and cozy and away from predators - your attic is perfect for them! It have nothing to do with how clean or dirty your house is.

And once they have that first litter of baby rats, its no easy feat to get them out.

Rat Facts - What do rats eat? Anything, even each other! In your attic they can eat the insulation off your electrical wires. In your home they can get into anything short of canned foods. They will steal food from your pets bowl or even get it right out of the bag through a small hole packaging they've eaten through.

Of course any food that is left out is a target, and don't forget about the crumbs from bread and cookies. There is a reason why your mom said don't eat in your bedroom!

So why does it matter if rats are in your home eating food and your wires? Well once the insulation is eaten through and exposed wires touch, you have a great potential for a fire. When a fire starts in a hidden location like a wall or in an attic, usually by the time you find out there is a fire its too late!

And if a rat is eating food right out of your pantry, the exposed food should be thrown out immediately. there is no salvaging the remaining food. Rats carry numerous bacteria and viruses that are dangerous to you and your family and can even cause death.

If a rat (or rat family) finds a food source in your home, they have no reason to leave. they will stay until they run out of food or we run them out.

Opossums Kill Ticks, Help Stop the Spread of Lyme disease.

Studies show that if you seen an opossum around your neighborhood, you should consider yourself lucky. While they look like the type of animal that would spread disease, the truth is that their appetites for ticks makes them effective in stopping diseases spread by them.
Tick populations are on the rise, and just three types of them can carry 15 diseases, including Lyme. The medical community has realized that Lyme Disease is often misdiagnosed and that the disease is more prevalent and problematic than previously known. Scientists are testing ways to limit the transmission of Lyme Disease by limiting record-high tick populations through natural ecosystems.
A study compared squirrels, mice and opossums, which all eat ticks, and found opossums were the most effective ecological traps. Researchers found that ticks favor opossums twice as much as the other animals, and opossums are the most effective at killing ticks. Opossums kill almost every tick that occupies them; a single opossum kills over 5500 ticks per week.
