This young lady used to be our client when she lived locally. She selflessly adopted a special needs dog. She spends so much time making sure he has an excellent quality of life. Please donate if you can.
Skippy needs a new wheelchair.
For those who don't know Skippy, he is my 4-year-old pitbull who is a ray of sunshine on wheels everywhere he goes. Very early on in his life, prior to coming into rescue, Skippy suffered a spinal cord injury that left him permanently disabled. He has what I affectionately call "chronic Scooby-Doo legs." His two back legs are constantly going involuntarily, constantly kicking; it often looks as if he's running in place.
Skippy loves life. He loves people. He never meets a stranger. He is wonderfully funky and derpy and unhinged in the most wholesome of ways. He is an experienced foster brother, a fearless explorer, an avid walker, and the most shameless attention hog. He is practically the unofficial mayor of our block; nearly every neighbor within walking distance knows him by name.
If he meets you once, he'll never forget you, and chances are, you'll never forget him either.
It is hard to talk about Skippy without mentioning his infamous walks around the neighborhood. And it's impossible to talk about his walks without mentioning his wheelchair, since without his wheelchair, Skippy can't walk. For the past year, Skips has been using a Walkin Wheels cart donated to us by a local family. It is truly beautiful how that all unfolded; the timing was unbelievably perfect.
I could show you video after video of Skippy's crazed excitement when he sees his wheelchair. He loves it. He knows it allows him to do his favorite thing in the whole world. Without his wheelchair, the best he can do is fumble, flop, & bunny hop his way around, a few feet at a time, usually scraping up his legs and paws in the process. With his wheelchair, he can fly. He can play. He can go say hi to his friends. He can do close to whatever any able-bodied dog can do. For Skippy, I think it's safe to say, his wheelchair is his most prized possession.
The past several months, however, I've noticed his excitement for his wheelchair dwindling. The day after a good walk, he has started staying in bed; I'll try to coax him out, but he'll refuse. He seems tired and sore. Several times now, he has fully resisted getting into his wheelchair, which is unheard of for Skippy. He's even hobbled himself away from me as I approached him with it.
I've put in countless hours trying to reconfigure Skippy's wheelchair, but no matter what I do, he just isn't comfortable. I've noticed his belly hanging lower, his back swaying deeper, as time goes on, and it's not good. Skippy is only 4 years old; he shouldn't be looking like an old man. I've spent even more hours trying to figure out alternatives to buying a brand new wheelchair.
At the end of the day, Skippy needs a new high-quality, custom-made wheelchair.
I have been in communication with Eddie's wheels. They make wheelchairs tailored to your dog's specific needs and measurements. A high-quality, custom made wheelchair for Skippy will be $725, including shipping.
We appreciate any help we can get to cover the cost!
