Hillcrest Animal Hospital

Hillcrest Animal Hospital We are a full service veterinary hospital. We offer various services, including surgery, medical tre He sold the practice to Dr. Ledbury in January of 2002.

In 1981, a veterinarian named Norm Griggs bought a house on the top of a small hill on Stage Road in Bartlett, TN. He painted the house blue and white and started his own veterinary practice. From this beginning, he and his wife, Melody, established Hillcrest Animal Hospital. Dr. Griggs hired Cary Ledbury, a young veterinarian, who shared the practice’s keen interest in excellent customer service,

medical, and surgical practices. Soon, the house on the hill would no longer accommodate all the patients, employees, and clients. A new building was then built on the same site, and was constructed around the old blue house so that medical services would not be interrupted. Twenty years after starting Hillcrest Animal Hospital, Dr. Griggs decided to retire and move to Florida. The practice has continued to grow and currently has four associate veterinarians, as well as a staff of about 20 technicians, receptionists, and kennel personnel. Dr. Ledbury has become known for his interest in surgery, and is well known for his skills in orthopedic surgery. To accommodate the continued growth, Dr. Ledbury expanded the facilities by building a new surgery and boarding facility in 2006. Today, our facilities include two spacious lobbies, five examination rooms, two treatment rooms, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a modern surgery center, grooming facilities and spacious boarding areas. The boarding facilities include indoor/outdoor runs, VIP runs, a playroom for dogs, and daycare services. Every effort is made to insure the excellent care of your pets while they are with us. We take pride in our history, our facilities, but most of all in our employees who work hard to make your Hillcrest experience one you will value and recommend.

Happy Holiday Season Hillcrest Family!

As you've likely seen on the news or social media, there is a "mysterious respiratory illness" affecting pets in some states (mostly northwest and northeast.) While we have seen a few upper respiratory illnesses in dogs lately, the volume is significantly less than it was this summer/early fall AND the severity has been nowhere near the severity of these cases in the news. We have spoken to both the local diagnostic lab and the state veterinarian to check on state trends, and they confirm that as of right now, no one is reporting that an outbreak of this nature has occurred in our state.

What we have seen (locally) is an uptick in a commensal respiratory organism that likes to take any opportunity to cause trouble. While "kennel cough" (also known as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease—CIRD) is usually blamed on one or two pathogens, it is actually a complex of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. Pets that are infected with more than one at a time tend to have more significant disease.

SO...what do we recommend to keep your pet protected and healthy?
1. Make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations.
2. Don't socialize your pet with other dogs whose vaccine status is unknown to you.
3. If your pet begins to exhibit any upper respiratory signs, seek veterinary attention immediately. We can submit swabs for PCR testing, BUT most viral causes are undetectable after 3 to 4 days.
4. If you plan to travel with your pet this holiday, be cautious traveling to any area that is experiencing a high volume of CIRD.
5. Always contact your vet with questions specific to your pet. A great client-doctor relationship is unbeatable for protecting your pet's health!

We have seen several pets with this condition in the past few weeks, so we wanted to post a link to help educate all our paw-rents of female cats and dogs. If your pet has a heat cycle and begins to feel sick within the next month or two, please get them to the clinic as soon as possible. When caught and treated early, the outcome is usually ok. If a pet is very ill and septic by the time we see her, the prognosis can be quite poor. Risk increases as your pet ages. If you do not have plans to breed your pet, or if her breeding days are over, we recommend spaying. If you have any questions relating to your specific furbaby, give us a call!

Pyometra is the life-threatening infection of the uterus that generally occurs in middle-aged to older female dogs in the 6 weeks following heat. A uterus with pyometra swells dramatically and is filled with pus, bacteria, dying tissue, and toxins. Without treatment, the pet is expected to die.
