Anger, devastation, and heartbreak…Unfortunately that is the reality of rescue. It’s exhausting and emotionally draining. Everyone in rescue has wanted to give up at some point. Some still do and some have already. Then something amazing happens and you continue to fight another day.
Today was an emotional rollercoaster. We were pi**ed. We were devastated. We were heartbroken. But then that amazing thing happened.
It rained ALL night long last night. 15mph winds. Thunderstorms. It was just a nasty night, and still some prick left a crate full of puppies in our parking lot. They had no shelter. Nothing to block the wind or rain. They had nothing at all but each other. We arrived this morning to find seven soaking wet, freezing babies all piled on top of each other struggling to survive and one little boy laying in the back all alone and lifeless. Once the seven were safely removed and transferred to different crates we were able to get to the little boy in the back and our worst fear was confirmed. He had no heartbeat and was not responding to any stimulation. With a broken heart, we wrapped him up in a clean blanket, placed his broken little body in a bag, and took him to the vet with his siblings to have him cremated. He was unloaded first. We walked in the door of the vet clinic and heard what we thought was a groan. The staff immediately rushed to help unwrap him but once again no heart beat could be found and zero response to stimulation. He was pronounced dead. Preparations for cremation started again and he let out another groan. The staff scattered gathering supplies. Heating pads, towels, dryers, everything they could get to raise his body temperature and dry him off. Still no heartbeat could be found but then he took a breath! Cordova Station Animal Hospital worked on him for over an hour before he finally had a good consistent heartbeat. They worked a miracle today and we will forever be grateful to them. He is a fighter but he is not out of the woods yet. He is alive but he is very weak. He is our Christmas miracle!
Since there are 8 of them and it’s Christmas time, we went with Santa’s reindeer for their names. We could use some prayers for our sad little broken reindeer this week. Hopefully they will all be happy little playful pups ready to roll next week!!
