🐾 Memphis Pet Owners: Watch Out for the Kissing Bug! 💔
The kissing bug is a blood-sucking insect that can carry a dangerous parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, that causes Chagas disease, a life-threatening illness that affects the heart.
🧬 The CDC said human cases of the disease have been reported in eight states including the Mid-South states, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas. So, our pets are at risk as well. Outdoor pets especially are at greater risk, through both bites and ingestion of infected bugs.
Who’s at Risk?
🐕 Pets who sleep outside
🪵 Homes near woodpiles or brush
🐜 Pets that chase or eat bugs
🏚️ Pets in kennels, barns, or sheds
⚠️ What to Watch for in Your Pet:
💤 Unexplained tiredness or low energy
❤️ Irregular heartbeat or heart-related issues
🐾 Swelling at bite site (usually face/mouth)
⚠ Sudden collapse, especially in young dogs
📉 Weight loss or appetite changes
Chagas often goes undetected until it’s too late. Early signs matter!
✅ Protect Your Pets:
Bring pets indoors, especially at night
Clean up brush, wood, and debris around the yard
Use preventatives year-round
Don’t let pets eat insects

👀 See a suspicious bug?
🚫Don’t touch or crush it, that is increasing exposure risk
Safely capture it: Use gloves, scoop it into a sealed container, or take a photograph
Submit it for ID/testing: Contact your local extension office or health department for identification or testing for T. cruzi
Consult your vet: If your pet could have been bitten or ingested a bug, talk to your veterinarian about monitoring or testing.
