Leashes for Living is a unique program that teaches veterans with disabilities to train their own service dog. Through positive training techniques, the veteran learns how to communicate with their canine partner. By teaching their dog special skills and manners, the veteran is capable of achieving an enhanced lifestyle.
The learned tasks are based on the veteran’s needs, thereby giving them greater independence not only in their home but in the community.
Once the team is established training begins, goals are set, and the team works toward various achievement levels which include, but are not limited to: AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Public Access Test Our 7 Levels of Obedience and Manners Advancing to: Special Skill Awards for the Service Dog Teams Special Trick Training for the Therapy Dog Teams After graduation, using the knowledge and techniques taught in the program will enable the person with disabilities to continue training the service dog to perform new tasks as the person's needs change.
