maturing is realizing that a trainer isn't a red flag ONLY because they said a red flag phrase. You gotta look at the whole substance of what they're saying to determine whether they're an educated source.

WHY you *may* want to lure your dog ⬇️
Think:
"I'm luring my dog right now to SHOW her the big picture
"to give her an idea of where we're headed and what my grand master plan is.
"I am NOT making my dog do the behavior."
I know this is a *super* subtle difference, AND it may be a thought you have to ponder on your own for awhile before you fully understand it.
But the difference is coercion:
"Show my dog the behavior" = just giving her some info so she can make an informed decision for herself whether she wants to do it.
"Make my dog do the behavior" = manipulating and contorting her body so that she's in my desired position.
Part of this is a mindset piece, yes. And some people may think I'm speaking semantics.
But *ACTUALLY* this mindset switch will inform how YOU set up your training sessions.
- how and when you fade a lure
- whether you actually want to use the luring technique to teach XYZ skill in the first place
- what behaviors you look for in your dog to tell you if she's doing the behavior because she genuinely wants to, or if she's doing the behavior because there's a treat in front of her nose.

Your job as a guardian isn't to run to a "whisperer" for all the answers.
Your job is to master how to ask your dog questions.
That's what truly having communication with a dog is about: asking your dog questions and being able to decode their answer.

It's okay to say you got your dog for selfish reasons.
It's okay to say you brought your dog home because you wanted to build the friendship with another soul that you never got as a kid.
It's okay to say you have your dog because you need something to hold you when you're sad.
It's okay to say you have your dog because it's the only relationship you can trust to not hurt you.
When you admit that the deep, real reason you have your dog is actually about connection with another individual,
it becomes abundantly clear that whether or not they sit/stay before dinner doesn't really effing matter.
It becomes clear that it doesn't matter if you let your dog sleep on the bed, or clean the crumbs off the floor, or scratch at your leg for attention.
There are no rules to how you build your friendship with your dog. The only guideline is:
Lead with connection.
Claim the TRUE why that you have your dog. If it isn't "because I wanna bark orders at someone", then don't.

Would I spend $400 just to hear "he's fine" again?
Yes.
Does that mean everyone can & should spend that money? No.
There are a lot of people that would spend $400 and then some on their dogs who don't actually love their dog unconditionally. They're simply paying their problems away.
We have to stop equating "how much" you spend on your dog with "how good" of a dog guardian you are. They are not inherently tied together.

It's really no wonder your dog doesn't "improve" in 1 training session
His brain has to sleep to process and store what it absorbed that day.
If his sleep is impaired, then that information will not store as well.
(It still retains info cuz brains are super cool. But it just won't be as proficient as we want it.)
After a training session, think to your dog:
"okay, I've just dropped some new information on you. Now go rest a good chunk of your body so your brain can tuck this info away for next time."

I said it. {More ⬇️}
There's really no point in a basic six week "obedience" class if all they're teaching is obedience behaviors.
That's why YouTube & Free Apps exist.
No, you should only pay for a basic skills class IF it's clear that the important takeaways of the class are lifeskills.
That is, the JOURNEY to the behavior. NOT the behavior itself.
"Sit" = pattern recognition
"Down" = body awareness
"Come" = scent tracking & familiarity w/ important people
"Stay" = arousal control/ emotional self-regulation
"Back Up" = spacial awareness
"Spin" = Flexibility & Athleticism
And, yes, all of these can be interchangeable lifeskills. I was just giving one example per behavior.
Guardians (and trainers) need to care far more about the cognitive skills acquired inside than just the obedient behavior happening outside.
If all you care about is teaching a butt to the ground, there are millions of ways to learn that for free. Don't pay for it.

I love how Mom reads the most subtle behaviors from her reactive, sensitive dog, Poppin. These aren't Poppin's overtly aggressive behaviors. These are the precursor behaviors that we should actually respond to. When Poppin says, "I can't train through this," instead of Mom saying, "but I have treats, let's do it again!" Mom says, "Okay. I understand. Let's get outta here!" This is a great example of - it doesn't matter what *you* think your dog "should" be able to train through, or what she trained through yesterday. It matters what your dog says she CAN train through in the moment she's confronted with her trigger. Your dog has the final day on a learning opportunity. PS. When you stop thinking about basic obedience dog training being about "what behavior are they doing?" (Sit/Stay), and you start thinking about it in terms of life skills (emotional regulation, sensory regulation, spatial awareness, arousal control), you suddenly stop worrying about their mistakes as much. And actually you EXPECT the mistakes more. Because you now have a better appreciation of the difficulty level. It's no longer, "is he sitting?" It's now, "is he able to regulate his emotions in this environment?" which is much more difficult.
