Lazy X Heart Ranch Welcome to our ranch in Menoken, ND. We raise American Quarter horses and black Angus cattle.

We have been raising AQHA Performance horses since 1977 in Menoken, ND. We focus on breeding all-around horses that can be used all day on the ranch, barrel races, and shows. We currently stand Freckles Shining Ace (Palomino grandson of Shining Spark), RCOne Little Pepto (Sorrel son of One Time Pepto), and Shiver N Shine Two (Perlino son of Shake Shiver N Shine). We have a wide variety of broodmar

We are still impatiently waiting for our first foal to be born at the LXHR and are now nearing the 320 day safe mark for a few more mares. One of which is Shadow's 2025 foal by Pepto.

This is Shadow's first foal with us from our program. Shadow is a big, soggy mare who is homozygous black and 7 panel negative.

The resulting foal will only be black, bay, blue roan, or bay roan.

It is available in utero

Grandma Lois and I made it to the spring Hermanson-Kist Horse Sale yesterday for a little bit to see LXH One Time Cowboy go through the ring. It’s so special seeing our Pepto foals grow up. Cowboy is a 2 year old gelding out of one of our young mares RWS Im Oaks Cowgirl. He is headed to SD to begin his ranching and cow work career!

Eden is sired by Whisper Smartly, a stallion we laid to rest fall of 2023 due to cancer. Doc was sired by Smart Little Lena (LTE $700+k). Doc's dam, Whisper ofa Playgirl (Freckles Pl***oy) earned over 150k in the NCHA with progeny earning over 150,000.

Eden's dam, Evvi is sired by Rawhides Slvr Bullet ( #1 All-time AQHA Open Reining Point Earner, Open AQHA Champion, and earner of the NRHA Morrison Trophy). Evvi's dam, Elys Tonto Adair was a granddaughter of Doc's Prescription.

Eden is expected to mature to 15 hands. She is 6 panel N/myhm, EJSCA N/N, and her DNA is already on file with AQHA.

Meet Archer!

He is such a gorgeous young stallion. He is 6 panel negative and EJSCA negative. He is by our Freckles Shining Ace (grandson of Shining Spark) and out of our Ivers Catalena Annie (Doc Olena and line bred Parker's Trouble - AQHA hall of fame).

Archer is halter broke, but not broke to tie yet. He is grained daily with total equine supplements, on zesterra minerals, and up to date on vaccinations and worming.

Archer banged up his right front knee the end of January. He had some swelling in it due to this and it is almost gone. He had X-rays done on 2/27 with Dr. Lindsey Horner and his knee is sound.

Archer measures an approximate mature height of 15.1. He will make for a versatile prospect and has been incredibly easy to work with so far.

Ace has mastered what time I get home from work everyday so that he can get his treat.

In the mornings he gets his grain when Daymon lets the chickens out and feeds them. In the afternoons he waits for me to get home for an apple treat.

He still is our golden boy even at 20 years old this year.

Very smart c**t out of a first time dam. Gin has been quick to pick up “ranch expectations” such as waiting outside of his stall to be let in for grain daily.

His sire was a son of Smart Little Lena out of a money earning daughter of Freckles Pl***oy.

His dam is by a money earning son of Freckles Pl***oy and out of a daughter of Blue Peptolena

Shiner is such a sweetheart. He had never met Liz prior to today but he took to her quickly giving lots of love to her while we were trying to take pictures.

Shiner is 6 panel negative, halter, leads, and measures for an estimated mature height of 14.1-14.2.

Frenchie Momma is officially in the corral and coming in for grain daily as foal watch commences very soon.

Frenchie is 309 days bred today and she tends to carry right about 330 but we don’t want to take any chances especially with how cold it’s going to be.

Frenchie is in foal to our RCOne Little Pepto. The color choices are 25% Buckskin, 25% Bay, 25% Palomino, and 25% Sorrel. She’s had one c**t followed by the last four being fillies so I anticipate a c**t this round.

Foal is available in-utero and after.

Outlaw spent time training the last 6 weeks — ponying, tying, and other various ground work. He got hauled home in some bitter cold temps but still looked great when he unloaded. We are so excited about the quiet and willing mind on this young stallion. Outlaw is technically two now, but won’t be two until June. He’s just a hair over 14 hands today. We are hopeful he will hit 15 hands when he’s done.

Outlaw is sired by Shiney Outlaw and out of our daughter of Pick Play. He is 6 panel negative as well.

37 of our mares coming home in preparation for our colder weather coming in along with getting the mares that are due early closer to home. We will miss these 40° days! But we know they’ll be back before we know it.

Baby Shiner and Momma Lil having a great time in the high winds. Shiner is Lil’s first foal and she is doing a great job with him. She’s such an attentive dam.

The bred mares thought a new horse was joining their herd this morning, but it was actually a moose. The lead mares ran to greet it then quickly realized it was not a horse and turned the herd around. We don’t see moose in our area very often (about one a year or less) so this was a rare and appreciated moment.

Tequila (Whisper Smartly x LXH Shining Tess) at 2 hours old already “smiling” — it’s moments like this that make the endless chores and expense worth it.

Here’s to the close of 2023 on 123123 day. A big year of gains, losses, and moving forward with our dreams. Thankful for all of our family and friends.

Our Story

Raising AQHA Performance horses since 1977

Daymon and Lois Mills started ranching out of Lazy X Heart Ranch in 1977, originally they mainly had cattle, with quarter horses to tend them. Over the years, they have went on the focus more on breeding tried and true working horse bloodlines. A couple years ago, they received an award from the American Quarter Horse Association for raising c**ts for over 25 years.
