Lazy X Heart Ranch

Lazy X Heart Ranch Welcome to our ranch in Menoken, ND. We raise American Quarter horses and black Angus cattle.

We have been raising AQHA Performance horses since 1977 in Menoken, ND. We focus on breeding all-around horses that can be used all day on the ranch, barrel races, and shows. We currently stand Freckles Shining Ace (Palomino grandson of Shining Spark), RCOne Little Pepto (Sorrel son of One Time Pepto), and Shiver N Shine Two (Perlino son of Shake Shiver N Shine). We have a wide variety of broodmar

e bloodlines but primarily have Shining Spark, Freckles Playboy, Peptoboonsmal, Boon Bar, and Playgun bred mares. Check out our website for full listings of our mares and available horses.

Posting Baby Jewell as we prepare for 2025 foaling to start in just 5 weeks.

Baby Jewell is out of our late Sunny Day Jewell who was as gentle and little as they come and by our herd stallion Freckles Shining Ace. Baby Jewell was much anticipated and we looked forward to keeping her in our herd to replace her dam but as Daymon and Lois continue preparing to retire, she’s one on the list that could go.

Baby Jewell was halter broke as a weanling and also freeze branded. She’s been haltered in our chute twice a year and wormed. She’s also friendly and she’ll come in the barn for grain, but for all intents and purposes she is a range mare.

She’s not officially measured but she’s 14.1-14.2 hands.

We bred her in 2022 and she had a lovely sorrel filly in 2023 by our RCOne Little Pepto. She had a very traumatic labor experience and we got there a bit too late. She was a mess and in shock and ended up rejecting the filly. Due to this we left her open for 2024. We exposed her for one heat cycle in early April 2024 but she did not take.

She’s currently open and ready to be trained and/or bred to the stallion of your choice.

She’s 6 panel negative and DNA’d

Outlaw spent time training the last 6 weeks — ponying, tying, and other various ground work. He got hauled home in some bitter cold temps but still looked great when he unloaded. We are so excited about the quiet and willing mind on this young stallion. Outlaw is technically two now, but won’t be two until June. He’s just a hair over 14 hands today. We are hopeful he will hit 15 hands when he’s done.

Outlaw is sired by Shiney Outlaw and out of our daughter of Pick Play. He is 6 panel negative as well.

Our hearts go out to everyone who has worked with Shake Shiver N Shine over the years and his untimely passing away. RIP Shake. What a great horse that was lost too soon.

Shake sired our wonderful perlino stallion Shiver N Shine Two (Sparky).

Merry Christmas from the Mills/Trefz Family!

As the Christmas season is upon us, we at Lazy X Heart Ranch wanted to take a moment to extend our warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This time of year always brings reflection and gratitude, and we find ourselves especially thankful for your continued support and trust in us.

This past year has been a rewarding one, and we've been so pleased to see so many of our horses find wonderful homes with families across the United States. During the past three years we have had foals find their way across 19 states. We truly value the relationships we build with our customers, and it warms our hearts to hear stories of how your new horses are doing. We cherish every photo and video we receive from pasture photos to show videos to even the next generation being born.

We’ve had some exciting things happen here at the ranch the past year, between adding on to our barn and breeding to Aaron Ranch’s Idolized in Blue for a 2025 foal. We also have our stallion prospect, Shiney Boons Outlaw, in training. Outlaw is sired by Shiney Outlaw (LTE $222,500+ and three world championships titles) and out of our Pick Jodees Fortune by Pick Play by Freckles Pl***oy. Outlaw has potential with his laidback personality and excellent confirmation. We hope that if his training continues to progress in this way, we will be able to expose 2 or 3 mares to him in 2025 to give him a shot at producing.

More excitement is coming in 2025, with breedings to Aint Seen Nothing Yet, Shake Shiver N Shine, and Shining In Town. We will also be breeding to sons of Ivory James and One Time Pepto. We are working to provide the best bloodlines with crosses between cutting, reining, and cow while incorporating some speed and emphasizing soundness of mind.

Time also takes its course on the ranch and we laid to rest some broodmares that touched our hearts during their time at LXHR. We lost Poco Docs Cookie in July. Cookie was born at the LXHR in 2004, and during her time, she raised 9 foals. She crossed best with Freckles Shining Ace, with 3 of their foals earning ribbons at local shows. In September, we put down Shesa Hot Gun (Dakota) due to cancer at only 12 years old. Dakota was sired by Guitar Gun and out of a Jackie Bee mare. She raised five foals during her too-short life. A repeat buyer brought her 2018 foal, LXH Cutters Dusti, to ND to pick up her foals this fall and it was like looking at her dam once again. In November, we laid RB Docs Last Lena to rest due to arthritis. Rosie O was a granddaughter of Rosie Ollama and out of a Goodbye Sam granddaughter (sire of Jody Fairfax). We only purchased her in 2019, but she produced 12 foals during her lifetime.

We know that owning a horse is a significant commitment, and we appreciate you choosing Lazy X Heart Ranch to be a part of your equine journey. We are always here to support you and your horses, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need any assistance.

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season filled with joy, laughter, and cherished moments with loved ones (and, of course, your horses!). We look forward to working with you more in the New Year.

God Bless,
The Lazy X Heart Ranch Family

Check out this young stallion that was born on the LXHR that’s available!

LXH One Time Ranger
2022 Bay Roan STUD
6 panel negative
15.2 HH and still growing. (May finish at 16hh)

Ranger is sired by our RCOne Little Pepto by the great One Time Pepto (LTE $331,097) and out of a money earning daughter of Pretty Boy Cat, Pretty Catlyn (LTE $85,000+). One Time Pepto, sired by Peptoboonsmal and out of the Smart Little Lena daughter One Time Soon, is a part of the elite group of National Reined Cow Horse Association Million Dollar Sires. One Time Pepto offspring have so far earned over 20 million in NRHA, NCHA, NRCHA, and AQHA competitions.

Ranger’s dam Mellon Bar (passed in 2023) was sired by Sugs Chita LTE $2683 in earnings from the NCHA and earned 30 performance points with AQHA. Her maternal grandsire, Roan Beau won over $10k on the race track in 1979 and goes back to Deep Sun.

Ranger has been used to push cows in and out of the barn and as a turn back horse. Started in a cutting program he has now transitioned into a reined cow horse program but is not going to be a good fit their program due to size. Very sweet and quiet stud. Easy to load and travel. Drinks and eats on the road (hasn’t been hauled a ton but the places we have gone he’s done really well)
He is still a baby but has the potential to be an amazing stud/powerhouse prospect.

-Lightly started on barrel pattern but not enough to make him set in his training.(trot and slow lope)
-Tracks the roping dummy (have not thrown a rope off yet)
-Has all the buttons just ready for a job
-A couple cosmetic scars and he does turn out at the knee on the front left leg but it doesn’t change the way he moves or seem to bother him
-UTD on coggins, Teeth, and Vax.

PPE welcome at buyers expense

A bit of an NFR special

DOB: 05/09/2024
Panel Results: 6 Panel N/N

Sire: Freckles Shining Ace (6 Panel N/N)
Dam: Ivers Catalena Annie (6 Panel N/N)

Archer's sire is Freckles Shining Ace, our home-raised stallion by Shiners Ace who is an own son of Shining Spark. Shining Spark was the NRCHAs youngest Million Dollar Sire, who reached million dollar status in 2004.

Archer's dam is Ivers Catalena Annie, who is sired by Catalena Son Evans who was sired by Catalena Boy by Doc Olena. Annie's dam Muriel's Trouble Gal was one of our broodmares that was line bred Parkers Trouble (AQHA Hall of Fame 2016 and AAA) and Bert (AQHA Hall of Fame 2007).

Archer has incredible full siblings and should mature around 15 hands.

Weaned, wormed, and friendly. He hasn't been broke to lead and tie yet, but would not take much, he follows us around everywhere.

Our second mare highlight is Ivers Catalena Annie

Annie was born on the LXHR in 2003 to our mare Muriel's Trouble Gal and by Catalena Son Evans.

Annie has raised 13 foals for us in her lifetime and has another one cooking for 2025.

She has produced:
1. 2007 Sorrel c**t by ML Hotshots Pl***oy (sold on app)
2. 2008 Palomino c**t by Freckles Shining Ace (sold on app)

5. 2012 Red Roan c**t by Mr Pepto 401 - El Peptos Catalena
6. 2013 Gray filly by Mr Pepto 401 - LXH Peptos Abby
7. 2014 Bay Roan filly by Mr Pepto 401 - LXH Peptos Allie

12. 2022 Bay filly by Freckles Shining Ace - LXH Shiners Angel
13. 2024 Palomino c**t by Freckles Shining Ace - LXH Shiners Archer

Annie's sire, Catalena Son Evans, was a gorgeous blue roan stallion out of the Tveit's breeding program (photo of him in comments). He was shown in 2003. His sire, Catalena Boy, earned 1 AQHA performance point, $12k in NCHA earnings, was the 1994 SDQHA High Point Open and Amateur Reiner, and earned his NCHA certificate in ability. Catalena Boy's sire, Doc Olena, speaks for himself.

Annie's dam, Muriel's Trouble Gal, was line bred Parker's Trouble and Bert bred. Parker's Trouble had 19 starts, 5, 2, 2, with earnings of $4609 by 1952 grading him as AAA. He then went on to prove himself on the ranch and gained his place in the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2016. Bert proved himself as a producing stallion and was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2007.

Annie has excellent bloodlines that have complimented our stallions Cord and Ace over the years. We are continually impressed by the athleticism and trainability of Annie's foals.

This year I’ve put an emphasis on trying to take at least one nice photo of each mare, especially some of our older broodmares.

My first highlight is EMS Freckles Jodee ‘Jodee’

Jodee is sired by Cee Doc Freckles and out of Grand River Lil

She is a granddaughter of Doc Clabber, great granddaughter of Colonel Freckles, and on the bottom side has Yellow Jack, King, and Sugar Bars right off her papers.

Jodee was born in 2000 making her 24 years old in this photo.

Jodee was purchased at the Bismarck Livestock as a weanling and started as a riding horse for Papa Daymon before becoming what we call the “herd matriarch”. Jodee has protected us when she feels a stallion would get too close to us in the pasture to walking beside me as a little kid to go see all of the foals in the pasture. Jodee also maintains her lead mare position to this day.

On top of all of this, she produced 10 amazing foals for us. The primary highlight is our stallion Freckles Shining Ace.

Jodee is starting to show her age now but everyone who meets her has been quick to point out how good of shape she’s in at her age as she still lives in the pasture and receives no special treatments yet. She’s also still sound and runs like the wind.

A good majority of the foals produced here at LXHR can trace Jodee back in their lineage.

Grandma Lois and I made a fun trip to the Rhode Family in Halliday yesterday to visit LXH Shiners Bodie and LXH One Time Sierra. They are just yearlings and boy have they grown. We also dropped of their 2024 foal, LXH Shiners Leia and brought Drifts Rolling Ellie with for some groundwork since we were making the trip anyways.

Thank you Rhode Girls; Kia Rohde and Kaylee for a great time 💗🙏🏼

What a success story with young LXH Shining Ryder. Ryder was sold off our place as a yearling stud c**t. He was then consigned with Danielle with Seventy Two Equine this fall. Danielle texted Grandma Lois and I about Ryder coming to her place and we instantly knew who to contact. A man, who had been in touch with us who owns Ryder’s 17 year old brother and wanted the exact replica of him. The stars aligned and Ryder is heading to his new home later this week. 🎉❤️🙏🏼

We are so thankful to have played a role in helping Ryder find a new home 🏡

Our Story

Raising AQHA Performance horses since 1977

Daymon and Lois Mills started ranching out of Lazy X Heart Ranch in 1977, originally they mainly had cattle, with quarter horses to tend them. Over the years, they have went on the focus more on breeding tried and true working horse bloodlines. A couple years ago, they received an award from the American Quarter Horse Association for raising c**ts for over 25 years.

  • Crystal Mills, grand daughter
