December 2nd is the day we celebrate all the wonderfully unique, one-of-a-kind pups out there — the dogs with stories written in mixed colors, mixed genetics, and mixed mischief. Mutts truly are special, and every dog deserves love, no matter their heritage.

Here at Vom Geliebten Haus, we work exclusively with purebred West German Show Line German Shepherd Dogs, and we’re very intentional and selective about every dog in our program. But that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate all dogs — purebred, mixed breed, shelter mystery-specials, or “I-swear-he’s-part-fox” surprises. Every dog is a treasure.

And in honor of National Mutt Day, I have to share a little story from a few weeks ago…

A gentleman called to ask about our program. Lovely conversation — and then he asked, very casually:

“Do you have any Golden Shepherds?”

Of course, I thought he meant coat color — maybe golden/red pigment? So I explained that our dogs are red and black, not pale golden, and we don’t have lighter-colored GSDs in our program.
He said, “No, no, it’s a breed. One parent is a German Shepherd and one is a Golden Retriever.”
At that point… I may have paused. And laughed. Politely. 😅
I told him, “Sir… that’s not a breed. That’s… a mutt. A lovely, sweet, adorable mutt, I’m sure — but still a mutt.”
(And for National Mutt Day, what perfect timing this story turned out to be!)
He explained that he loves German Shepherds, his wife loves Golden Retrievers, and they wanted to compromise.

So I gave him my best professional breeder advice:
“Get two dogs.”
One German Shepherd for you, one Golden Retriever for her. Everyone wins — especially the dogs!

A little behind-the-scenes breeder humor for today…

Yes — we do have a waiting list.
And yes — sometimes I get that phone call…

Someone asks, “Do you have a puppy available?”
Me: “We have a waiting list.”
Them: “How long is the wait?”
Me: “About four months. Would you like to learn how the waiting list works?”
Them: “No thanks, I’ll just call you back in four months.”

…And before I can even explain what that actually means — click. 😂

Fast forward four months
Same person calls:
“Hi! I’m ready for my puppy!”
Me: “Did you want to join the waiting list?”
Them: “WHAT?!? You told me four months!”
Me: “Yes… and the people who joined the waiting list four months ago now have puppies.”

I promise — I’m always happy to explain how everything works!
But “I’ll call you back in four months” is the puppy equivalent of hitting snooze on your dreams.

Today my heart feels extra full. ❤️
We always love hearing from our puppy families, and today we received the sweetest update about Katya, one of the puppies from our program, who was also a breeding female until we retired her and placed with a wonderful family. Staying in touch and following our older dogs as they grow, thrive, and are loved in their forever homes means the world to us.

Here is the beautiful note we received:

“Just wanted to let you know Katya is doing great! We love her so much! So thankful for her! 🥰” “She is such a wonderful, sweet girl! ❤️”

We are truly blessed knowing Katya is cherished, healthy, and surrounded with so much love. Updates like these remind us why we do what we do.

Snow days with my dogs are pure magic.
There’s something about those first soft flakes that turns the world quiet and peaceful — and then turns my pups into the happiest, wildest little snow explorers. Watching them bounce, zoom, and stick their noses deep into fresh powder is the kind of joy that fills your heart right up.

They remind me to slow down, breathe in the cold air, and enjoy the simple moments… the soft crunch under our feet, the sparkling trees, and the warmth of being together.

Grateful for this season, this snow, and these dogs who make every winter day feel like a little adventure.

Puppy Update Time!
We absolutely love receiving updates from our VGH families — they truly brighten our day and remind us why we do what we do.

Today we’re sharing a beautiful update from Beretta’s family, and our hearts just melted reading it. “Must share a few photos from this morning — Beretta’s first snow!! Of course, she loves it!
Beretta is doing fantastic as ever. She is very confident in anything she does. She has a great presence and spirit (sweet with a touch of spice)!!
She loves people and cannot wait until that first pet!
I love her dearly and could not be more happy to have her be a cherished member of my family.
The snow has just begun here as we have to come.

Nothing brings us more joy than seeing our puppies thriving, loved, confident, and embraced as true members of their families. Beretta looks absolutely radiant in her first snowfall, and we can already tell she is living her best life.

Naming a puppy is such a personal moment. It carries wishes, meaning, personality, and sometimes memories. And somehow, this simple letter has woven a beautiful thread between families, litters, and years of breeding.

Our children grow into whatever we plant in them. I’ve always told mine that they’re smart, they’re kind, they’re precious — and because they believed me, they became exactly that. And now I think my kids are using the same strategy with the puppies… and honestly, it’s working.

As we’re all bundled up, cozy in our little cabin in the middle of the woods, waiting for the first real snowstorm to roll in overnight, I’m scrolling through old pictures and remembering just how much fun winter can be with a puppy. Those snowy days with the dogs were some of the absolute best — pure joy, pure chaos, and the sweetest memories.
