Are they "just cats"?
This kitty family is one I've been feeding for weeks. I've never seen a mother and FATHER so attentive to their baby. Always within sight, this little one was very loved. On Christmas day, the baby was hit by a car and it was clear she wasn't going to make it. I gave her Meloxicam as I frantically looked for mom. Another male in their colony saw the accident happen and came running to her side. He immediately started crying, licking her softly.
His cries brought people from blocks away to see what was going on. Everyone thought he was the mother, it was then that I saw the father watching from behind a flower pot. I brought his daughter over, and laid her on the sidewalk. Knowing the family, I was sure he also saw what happened.
Within just a few minutes, the kitten was gone. The father, without hesitation, knew his daughter had died. His cries now filled the air as he ran from house to house. I assumed looking for mom, he was the one currently on watch. Not wanting to leave the kitten alone, I took her back in my arms. We walked together also looking for mom as it's very important for them to know what happened to their loved ones.
To my surprise, the police showed up. Not knowing the culture or language, I assumed maybe I was doing something wrong. I listened to them talk to Dave, I could only tell the conversation was one of concern. I thought maybe I should give the kitten back to them, I can now tell you that was NOT what they wanted. They actually saw how distressed that I was and came to our house to check on me. Not all police in Mexico are like what you hear about in the news.
It's been a couple days now since this horrific situation took place. Mom has not been back to our house, I continue to encourage her to eat by bringing the food to her. Her loss is still very present on her face as she gives me a couple blinks. There is no "just" when it comes to love and cats definitely know love as much as our beloved doggies do.
RIP little michi. 💔🙀😿
