We would like to send a great big thank you to Andrew Barela (@theandrewbarela), Wildlife Technician for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Andrew spent the day collecting native plants and brought them here to plant at the zoo! Andrew is eager to help turn our current Large Pond exhibit into a native wetland habitat! Thanks Andrew!
We appreciate all of the people who came out this weekend and joined us for the second and final weekend of our Earth Day festivites.
Hopefully everyone who joined us had a great time and learned something new about pollinators! ππͺ°π¦

It's a beautiful day to do some gardening, and that's exactly what London, from Girl Scout Troop 3019, is doing for our animal friends here at the zoo! Nothing beats fresh produce! Thank you Girl Scouts!! ππ½π₯¬π₯

Meet our gray fox Wizzer. He came to us in 2013 after being kept as an illegal pet and being deemed non-releasable.
He loves interacting with his enrichment and can be quite vocal at times.
Did you know that gray foxes are semi-arboreal? That means that they are comfortable climbing trees and prefer to spend their time up higher than other fox species.

It's a great day to come on down to the Merced Applegate Zoo and celebrate the mural being created with us!
Hope you are staying as dry as our goats in this storm because our Zookeepers certainly aren't. Rain or shine our Zookeepers are working hard (with a few dance breaks) taking care of all of our animals! ππ»πΊπ
Penelope, the very happy hippopotamus cannot wait to meet you all this Saturday and Sunday for some fun Valentine's Day crafts and a scavenger hunt! Activities start at 10:00 and go until 3:00! Be sure to stop on by and give a great big hug to Penelope!
Our Turkey Vulture Ike enjoyed some behavioral enrichment today and got to shred some paper while scavenging for food. In the wild, Turkey Vultures are scavengers that look for meals in an unlikely place: deceased things also known as carrion.
These birds are highly specialized around their diet. They have bald heads to help keep clean while eating and they are one of the bird species in North America with the best sense of smell to help find those meals!
Did you know the poison of Poison Dart Frogs comes from their diet in the wild?
Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and Southern America, these frogs eat specific insects in their habitat that allow them to produce toxins. Frogs cared for by humans like ours eat a diet of flightless fruitflies and other small insects that don't provide those toxins, making them perfectly safe!
Enjoy this clip of one of our frogs snacking on a few of those flightless fruit flies. πͺ°
