There have now been fires at both Dog Resort facilities in Seattle recently that have led to dead, injured, or missing dogs. I have recommended the facility in the past, but have now removed them from my list of recommendations.

Remi, one of two missing dogs from Tuesday’s fire at The Dog Resort, has been found alive.

A new 24-hour veterinary practice has opened in the Bridle Trails area of Bellevue. In the past, I’ve preferred to take pets in need of immediate medical attention to either Seattle Veterinary Specialists in Kirkland or Blue Pearl in Renton, which are often very busy. It’s nice to know there’s an alternative that’s located within my service area.

Bellevue Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital aims to be the gold standard of emergency and specialty care in the region.

Good news for animals in my home state. These state assembly and senate bills were passed and signed into law recently by California Governor Gavin Newsom:

1. Senate Bill 879 prohibits unnecessary toxicological testing for pesticides, chemical substances and other products on dogs and cats. “Animal testing that has no scientific value and causes terrible pain and suffering is inhumane, unnecessary and cruel," said Scott Wiener (D-SF), who introduced the bill.
2. Assembly Bill 1648 requires kennel owners to have a disaster evacuation plan in place before they can operate.
3. Senate Bill 774 makes the emotional support dog certification process easier for homeless people.
4. Assembly Bill 1290 states that taking or stealing someone else’s pet is now considered theft, and therefore punishable by law.
5. Assembly Bill 2723 expands microchip registration for dogs and cats, providing more support for people who’ve lost a pet.

A growing number of my clients use fountains. Based on my own experience, only three of the fountains reviewed here are worth the money. If you do provide your pet with a water fountain, please make sure they actually use it. Always provide at least one plain bowl of fresh water in addition to the fountain. Make sure you completely empty and at least rinse out the fountain every 2-3 days. Despite circulating water and filters, the water can grow stagnant and slimy remarkly quickly. Last but not least, if your pet has a habit of chewing cords, do not use a fountain with a pump that operates on electricity.

The best cat water fountains provide fresh running water for a week or more, employ smart filtration systems, don’t have a lot of fiddly parts, and are a cinch to clean. Click here to read more
