Did you know that massage can benefit horses with sacroiliac joint issues?

SI problems are hard to diagnose and treatments include massage, limb manipulation, hot and cold therapies, laser therapy, anti-inflammatories, nutrition, specific exercise plans, etc.

When the SI joint is injured or irritated, the muscles surrounding it spasm or tighten and can create problems in the whole hind end of the horse. Massage therapy works to decrease muscle spasms, increase circulation in the area to increase the amount of cells in that area that will help with healing, which in turn takes pressure off the joint & also relieves hind end muscles that affect how the horse moves. Taping after a massage also increases the benefits.

✨ Not only does massage therapy help treat this condition, it also helps PREVENT this injury which is key to keeping our animals healthy and injury free

Fun fact of the day! If you’re not going to your veterinarian for advice on your animals’ joint supplements and other health supplements (you should be!) but when buying over the counter look for the NASC emblem!

Pet supplements aren’t well regulated and many companies make claims that are not true about their products. This organization is trying to better the industry and their emblem shows efficacy of the product and that it has been tested to make sure that what they claim is in it actually is.

But when in doubt definitely ask your vet! 😁

TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR SENIOR ARTHRITIC DOG:

Things you can do at home:
⭐️ Keep them on a reputable joint supplement to help lubricate arthritic joints - check w/ your vet for their recommendation
⭐️ Short daily walks on soft surfaces
⭐️ Warm compresses over the joints for 5-10 minutes twice a day - this works AMAZING for my senior dog!
⭐️ Thick, soft beds for your dog to lay on
⭐️ Padded ramps instead of steps or jumping into your car
⭐️ Keeping your dog at a healthy weight keeps unnecessary weight & pressure off their joints

🌟Just a friendly reminder to ALWAYS STRETCH YOUR HORSE out before and preferably after a workout/event/ride.

It’s that time of year when everyone is working on building muscle, getting fat off their horse, and getting them in shape. But remember that all of that comes with a lot of muscle contraction and stiffness.

Stretching allows the muscles/tendons/ligaments to expand & stay healthy and it can prevent a lot of injuries.

There’s a lot of helpful YouTube videos on stretching your horse, I have videos on here, and anyone can reach out to me with any questions about it. 😊

Stretching doesn’t take a lot of time & the benefits are definitely worth it. Don’t forget this during this busy time of year! 🌟
