Green Acres Farm Animal Foundation

Green Acres Farm Animal Foundation Farm animal sanctuary focusing on species appropriate husbandry and science-based training practices in Meriden, KS. We appreciate all of your support!

Green Acres Farm Animal Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit animal sanctuary. Our primary focus areas are rehabilitation, training, and providing a forever sanctuary for those who would likely end up in an unfortunate situation if they left the Foundation due to medical or behavioral issues. We strive to use positive reinforcement training methods to help the animals learn necessary husbandry behavio

rs such as medical treatments, as well as to train animals to demonstrate the benefits and effectiveness of the method. We currently house 16 horses, 2 miniature horses, 2 miniature donkeys, 2 small breed cattle, 13 goats, 8 cats and 2 dogs, and as you can imagine this is a lot of work and expense. Every like, share and mention matters!

For the better part of my life, I did what a lot of horse people do, I listened to those with more experience, people who had been doing this thing for a long time. I didn’t question a lot of what I heard about training, nutrition, hoof care, and just about everything else you would want to learn about horses. There were some things that didn’t sit right in my soul, but what did I know? Who was I to question hundreds of years of experience and knowledge gained by that experience?

Fast forward a few decades and a lot of information later one of the biggest things that I learned was that if it doesn’t feel right you don’t have to do it. No matter what anyone says. You’re gonna have to have thick skin though. People don’t often take kindly to questioning long held beliefs even if the only “questioning” you are doing is just not getting in line. They will ridicule your differences, label you as “one of those” and generally push you to the outskirts of the in crowd but it’s only natural. At our core we humans find comfort in sameness as much as any herd animal, and you’d think that would help us to understand the horses a little bit better, but it seems it rarely does.

I strayed so far from the tradition that I convinced myself that the herd had no safer place than in my care. Letting them be adopted out into the world was as good as driving them to the kill pen myself, or worse yet, condemning them to a life of terror and pain. I forgot about the proverbial baby in the bathwater, that just because a lot of traditional horsemanship makes my head hurt there are still plenty of good people out there doing just what I’m doing. Trying their best to coexist with these animals in a way that is least intrusive and mutually beneficial. I was doing exactly what the traditionalist did to a lot of us positive reinforcement trainers, pushing them to the outskirts and labeling them unworthy.

Recently someone walked into my life that changed everything I thought I knew, everything I thought I wanted, and everything I thought about those who think and believe so very much differently than I do. It was like one of those old movies that started in black and white and then suddenly the technicolor switched on and the eyes of the audience were as wide as dinner plates. I could have discounted this person based on our many, many differences but would have missed out on the way they look at me like I am made of pure magic. The way they see me in a way I still don’t yet see myself, and that changed me. It reminded me that there are good people everywhere even when we don’t agree on how to train or keep horses, and those good people could very well be the technicolor my herd deserves.

So, I guess this is a very long announcement that a limited number of our animals will be listed for adoption in the next year. Potential adopters will be carefully screened and vetted, of course. Reach out to us if there are any that you have watched and loved and would like to add to your own herd.

Chester & Chino are looking for a forever home!

Chester and Chino came to us about 6 months ago and now are ready to find their new home!

They are about a year old and both are spunky and talkative little dudes who love their snacks. They are a little uncertain about handling but have not bitten at all and do great for their nail trims. Chester is currently being treated for hay poke in his eye. They can be homed together or separated.

Will come with appropriate sized cage, hides, bedding, food bowls, water bottles, bag of pellets, bag of orchard hay.

Can deliver within one hour of Meriden, KS.

Message me if you are interested in either of these guys!

Things have settled after the storm and we are able to get around more easily, thank goodness! It's mornings like this that remind me why we do this, I wouldn't trade this place for the world 🥰.

Since our main laborer (AKA Dad) is laid up for a while after a knee replacement, I am figuring stuff out on my own!

Today it was the tractor running out of fuel right after I dropped the first bale in for the east herd 🙃. So I had to go fill up the very sophisticated fuel barrel in the back of the truck and get close enough to the tractor to hook up the pump. I only scraped a little paint off of Bessie, she's fine 🤣. Mission accomplished! 💪 💪 💪

Sadie & Sophie (cows) and Lincoln, Dexter, and Jackson (sheep) were integrated into the big herd today! There was a lot of running and playing and they will spend the winter on the hill with the crew.

Our Story

Our mission is to rescue farm animals in need and provide them with rehabilitation, training, and forever sanctuary, if necessary. We adopt out a limited number of horses to approved homes, and provide a forever home to those whose injuries place them at too high a risk to rehome. Many have come from the slaughter pipeline and for that reason, horses must be able to walk, trot and canter calmly under saddle before being adopted. Our goats and cattle are not for adoption at this time. Our second generation farm in NE Kansas aims to produce the forage needed to sustain our sanctuary animals, and to inspire humans to manage land in partnership with nature. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization, your donations are tax deductible!
