We had to say goodbye to Ruby this past Wednesday. After being stiff in her hind legs and progressing all the way to barely being able to use them, a trip to the vet and some xrays revealed that she had sever arthritis in her neck that was affecting her nerves. The vet determined that it wouldn't be safe for us to bring her back to Kaizen and suggested we put her to rest.
We'll miss getting to see her perk up when seeing a jump and how easy she made cantering look.

Our sweet Sonny had to be laid to rest on Saturday. His friendly personality was loved by our students and he will be greatly missed. It's always so hard to lose one of our sweet friends.
If you have a memory/photo of Sonny you'd like to share put it in the comments.

Because of this loss we are in the process of looking for another big boy (or girl) to add to our herd. If you know of anyone looking to rehome a larger horse let us know.

It is always sad, painful times, these seasons of goodbyes. But these times are also times of gratitude for the gifts of friendship, love, life lessons, partnership and more. As Kaizen says "Goodbye " to Canyon, also previously known as Pauli, it is with hearts filled with gratitude for the gifts he gave our students. He always wanted to do right. Always tried. Did more than we expected in his short exposure to jumping. The pain from his head shaking syndrome overcame his ability to carry riders safely. His discomfort was evident even in his turnout times.
Horses are never really ours, they are borrowed and at some point we need to let them go. Canyon you are missed.

The weather and view at the barn on Tuesday were just too good to not be out enjoying. Not to mention the work that had gone into setting up the course. It was just begging to be tested out.

We are preparing for our Trail Challenge April 30th. But in the mean time we had a few women surprise us with an update in our tack room. We also have a special lamb named Fencer. The whole Kaizen tribe is begging to keep her. More pictures to follow.

One of the wonderful parts of Kaizen Farm are the elderly horses giving the gift of teaching beginner riders the joy of horsemanship. This includes many aspects of the interactions, from care, ground work, riding, competing, learning, and loving. But also the responsiblity of the care givers to know when a horse tells you it is time to be done.
Sometimes it is easy to know, but it is always painfully hard to say good bye.
Tabard has been with us 9 years. He has been a gift in many of our students lives. But this past month he had a few visits to the vet, with blood levels revealing sky rocketing numbers for cushings, metabolic troubles and an infection. Medications were purchased in hopes we could turn things around. He had a few days with some brighter expressions, but really day by day things got harder. We could see some depression and lethergy and a building pain behind his eyes.
Liz Scott helps the horse leave this world with dignity and kindness. We thank her skills in helping in this task as well. On Tuesday, December 20th, Tabard left us. But he will be remembered in so many hearts.
If you happen to have a picture of him from the years you were with him, please text them to me so I can post them here as a tribute to his gift to us!
Or just put your comments out here for all to see.
Thank you.

December has been a fun month socially with a Christmas party for each age group.
December 4th the party was in the covered arena for the under 13. The following Saturday the teens over 12. Horse Quiz, beach volleyball, and gift exchange created some bonding, shouting and cheeeing.
The adults had a less rowdy party, but equally bonding and fun.
Merry Christmas to all Kaizen Family and friends over the past and present years

Thursday night's games show for our junior (U11) riders. A lot of photos to cover the 42 competitors. Many thanks to Jamie for running the program throughout the summer and our amazing teenage students who form the Pony Team and work so hard to assist her.

This year's show was a pairs competition of dressage followed by a trail challenge. A lot of fun was had by all 20 competitors who ranged from 11 to 80. The judges and volunteers had a good time too. Many thanks to Lenka Skalska - a professional photographer who happens to be one of our students - for taking such great photos.
