What is color dilution alopecia?
Color dilution alopecia (CDA) is a genetic condition that causes hair loss and thinning in patches in dogs with a "dilute" coat color. Dilute colors include blue (diluted from black) or light fawn (diluted from chocolate or liver-colored coats).
CDA is caused by a recessive gene that affects how pigment is distributed in a dog's hair. This variant leads to clumping of melanin granules, which can cause hair breakage and abnormal hair growth. Puppies with CDA usually have normal coat, but later they develop brittle coats, bare patches, flakiness, and are prone to recurrent infections.
We have seen an uptick in this condition, especially among the “silver labs” that have recently begun to be bred. We have also seen among this variant and increase in anxious behavior, rather than the typical “happy lab”. This can also happen in other breeds that were not originally bred to be blue, such as Dobermans, dachshunds, French bulldogs, miniature pinchers, and others. Be sure you are ready for possible consequences when pets are bred especially for color. And know your breeder.
Another great example of health side effects that can be seen from breeding for color can be observed when two merle coats are bred together. This can be a deadly combination , but some unscrupulous breeders will breed this potentially deadly combination on purpose, for unusual coat color, and pups that end up blind or deaf or with heart problems are sometimes simply abandoned or euthanized.
