BLAME BENJAMIN FRANKLIN!
The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first conceptualized in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage and calculated considerable savings. In 1895, New Zealand entomologist and astronomer George Hudson proposed the idea of changing clocks by two hours every spring to the Wellington Philosophical Society. In 1907, British resident William Willett presented the idea as a way to save energy. After some serious consideration, it was not implemented. But it certainly is today!

If Pets Had Thumbs Day is a fun holiday that encourages people to consider what their pets might do if they suddenly had thumbs. We bet they would do some of these things:
• Open food: Pets might open all the cans in the house or order food online
• Play video games: Pets might enjoy video games that combine their prey drive with using thumbs
• Take selfies: Pets might take selfies and use Snapchat filters
• Hitchhike: Pets might hitchhike to the park
• Order online: Cats might order expensive food online and dogs might order toys and food from every place they can
• Go on adventures: Dogs might want to go on road trips to every dog park in the country
What do you think your pet would do with thumbs?

KREWE DE BARKUS 2025
Thank you to ALL of our participants this past weekend. We pleased to announce our 2025 Krewe De Barkus King and Queen, as well as our alternate placings. We crowned Bleu (Owner: Leslie Lee) as our king and P*e Wee (Owner: Terri Fairchild) as our Queen. Placed as our alternates, in order from 1st to 3rd, we have Lokie (Owner: Randall Rose, 1st Alternate), Goose (Owner: Willow Campbell, 2nd Alternate), and Honey Bun (Owner: Joyner Applebee, 3rd Alternate). We had an amazing turnout with even more amazing participants. All proceeds gathered from Krewe De Barkus go to the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter and Roadside Rescue. We would like to extend thanks to WTOK’s Lindsey hall for being our emcee, and WTOK’s Carmen Corley and Ross McLeod for judging the costume contest. Their help is well appreciated. Celebrate National Walking the Dog Day
National Walk Your Dog Day on February 22 is a fun and engaging event that highlights the joy and benefits of walking with your furry friend. This day is important because it encourages dog owners to take their pets out for regular walks, which boosts physical health and happiness for both humans and dogs! There are a number of different ways that you can celebrate National Walking the Dog Day. Of course, the most obvious is to go on a walk with your dog. That’s a must! However, why not go on a trail that you don’t usually? You could explore a new part of your local area together. Dogs love exploring new sounds and sights just as much as we do, if not more.

We hope to see you there!

NATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET DAY
On February 20, pet lovers everywhere observe National Love Your Pet Day. This holiday focuses on giving extra attention to our pets. The day encourages pampering our pets and focusing on the special relationship pets hold in our lives.
Did you know that most households in the United States have at least one pet? While there are more cats than dogs in the United States, more households have dogs than cats, but not by much. Pets are not limited to the canine and feline categories. There are quite a few who prefer the companionship of birds, reptiles, fish or rats. Whoever your pet companion is, we are sure you will enjoy spending a little extra time with them on National Love Your Pet Day and reap the benefits, as well such as stress relief and lower blood pressure. So this February 20 (and every day) show your appreciation to your pets!

UNUSUAL KITTY AT PSAH
We were very excited to have Titus Weir — a Sphynx cat — come to Poplar Springs Animal Hospital. That’s our Robyn holding him and we can report he is an absolute sweetheart and much loved by his owner Brian Weir. For the curious among you, the Sphynx cat — also known as the Canadian Sphynx — is a breed of cat known for its lack of fur. Hairlessness in cats is a naturally occurring genetic mutation, and the Sphynx was developed through selective breeding of these animals, starting in the 1960s. Sphynx are known for their extroverted behavior. They display a high level of energy, intelligence, curiosity and affection for their owners. They are one of the more dog-like breeds of cats, frequently greeting their owners at the door and friendly when meeting strangers. The contemporary breed of Sphynx cat is distinct from Russian hairless cat breeds. Although hairless cats have been reported throughout history, breeders in Europe have been developing the Sphynx breed since the early 1960s. The Canadian Sphynx breed was started in 1966 in Toronto, Ontario, when a hairless male kitten named Prune was born to a black and white domestic shorthair queen (Elizabeth).
