UNUSUAL KITTY AT PSAH
We were very excited to have Titus Weir — a Sphynx cat — come to Poplar Springs Animal Hospital. That’s our Robyn holding him and we can report he is an absolute sweetheart and much loved by his owner Brian Weir. For the curious among you, the Sphynx cat — also known as the Canadian Sphynx — is a breed of cat known for its lack of fur. Hairlessness in cats is a naturally occurring genetic mutation, and the Sphynx was developed through selective breeding of these animals, starting in the 1960s. Sphynx are known for their extroverted behavior. They display a high level of energy, intelligence, curiosity and affection for their owners. They are one of the more dog-like breeds of cats, frequently greeting their owners at the door and friendly when meeting strangers. The contemporary breed of Sphynx cat is distinct from Russian hairless cat breeds. Although hairless cats have been reported throughout history, breeders in Europe have been developing the Sphynx breed since the early 1960s. The Canadian Sphynx breed was started in 1966 in Toronto, Ontario, when a hairless male kitten named Prune was born to a black and white domestic shorthair queen (Elizabeth).

Take the chance to hang out with your pup on National Doggy Date Night on February 3. You’re working all day, out running errands, or spending time with your family and loved ones. How about slowing down to spend some quality time with the one who is always there for you — your dog. They don’t call them man’s best friend for nothing: dogs are loyal, protective and always excited to see you! On this February 3, spend a little extra time with your dog: play games like fetch or frisbee, or go on a nice long hike. Go beyond the standard walks and couch snuggles and make an event out of it to make your pooch feel special!

The groundhog really can predict the end of winter…
Just not with his shadow. Because groundhogs hibernate every winter, the fact that he'd bother to leave his hideaway is a natural sign of spring to come! The furry critter is also easy to find — groundhogs live in the majority of central and eastern U.S., plaguing gardeners everywhere. And did you know this? Punxsutawney Phil has a ridiculously long official name. His full moniker is "Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary." Yikes!
