Parents: While this meme is meant to be funny, we actually get this question quite often. Commercial lambs are currently worth $200 at the local sale barn - while you may not realize it… not all sheep are created equally - it’s really a matter of apples and oranges. While It may be possible for you to buy a commercial lamb cheaper, it’s not very wise to use one as a market lamb project. The whole purpose of your child having a lamb project is to teach them many lessons not the least of which is that repetitive hard work can and will lead to success.
We as show lamb breeders spend a tremendous amount of money, time and effort to cultivate our herds genetics and help our lambs be competitive in many different show classes. Starting with quality show ewes, using tools like artificial insemination, embryo transfer are additional expenses that commercial producers don’t face and we simply cannot sell lambs for whatever the commercial market will bear. Often when parents aren’t willing to invest in a quality lamb to begin with… they are handicapping their child’s ability to be successful because no amount of good feed or show additives can fix the genetic component of the equation. While we highly recommend that all children get involved in 4H and FFA and would hope as many as possible will show a lamb… we want to set everyone up to be successful and would encourage you to buy a lamb from a reputable club lamb breeder, either us or someone else, with the experience and genetics to help their clients achieve their goals.
