If You've Ever Loved A Collie . . .
By Margaret O'Hair
If you've ever loved a collie,
You'll never be quite the same,
Nothing makes your heart skip
like your Highland Puppy's name
The rumple of gold and white
The glow of dark eyes in the night
Taill waving, Scottish banner high
So much spirit, they almost fly!
From the slide of fur, The sleek of head
Always near your side, Sprawled out by your bed
Prancing, dancing, saucy feet
Evil mischief, heart still sweet
Carrying balls, tattered bits of rope
Their goodness gives your world hope
If you've ever loved a collie
You'll never be quite the same
Nothing makes your heart skip
Like your Highland Puppy's name
Running, soaring, all swishing around
Bringing you things that they have found
Is that a bird? Oh, wait, that's a sheep!
That's what I dream of while I sleep!
Chasing fleecy things, circle left, now right,
All instincts on, life is brilliant, glitter-bright
Obedience heeling, sits, downs, and drills
Tracking smells over all the grassy hills
Agility jumping, tunnels, and weaves
Who loves a Collie, always believes
Arc over that jump, Go out that way wide
Climb the A-Frame, scoot down the other side
Over, under, on top of, tunnel ins and outs
Jump, jump, jump! Swagger all abouts. . .
End of the day, tired, all energy is spent
Checkbook tally, money needed for the rent
But you're rich in love, and a billionaire in loyalty
For your collie adores you like you're royalty
This world just spins, makes us dizzy,
But thank God for dogs to keep us busy
If you've ever loved a collie
You'll never be quite the same
Nothing makes your heart skip
Like your Highland Puppy's name
The rumple of gold and white
The glow of dark eyes in the night
Taill waving, Scottish banner high
So much spirit, they almost fly!
The years go by, honestly they speed too fast
Why is time finite, and that it does not last. ..
Other people think that more than one,
They are just the same under the sun
But each is different, each unique
All have something C'est magnifique
The sable one with sparkly eyes
The merle boy who came as a surprise
The golden girl who did the right things
The ruffly-copper boy who liked to howl and sing
The puppies tender, young, wide-eyed like owls
All the ferocious rough-tough baby growls
All grow up, all get older, with each night
Eyes get wiser, but love is just as bright
Light is glowing through the trees
Wind blows that slow-fade of summer breeze
You don't wonder where they've gone or where they are
You know that they never ever do go far
They wait for you, they are yonder on that ridge of blue
Running the Rainbow Bridge with hearts chanting-beating true
The rumple of furry gold and white
The glow of dark eyes in the night!
Taill waving, Scottish banner high
So much spirit, they almost fly!
And you know Faithful, you know Forever
With every Highland puppy name
That's why if you ever love a collie
You will never be quite the same
