We are currently in need of towels, potty pads, and blankets. We would appreciate any donations. There has been an increase in Parvo positive puppies. Sanitation is very important when dealing with this very contagious disease. Therefore, we have had to discard our current supply. Thank you in advance!

Meet Batman! Batman is a 14 year old Domestic shorthair cat who has had challenges with diabetes for a long time. When he was originally rescued by his owners, he had a reputation of being a villain; a tough guy. He was even accused by a neighbor of eating their chihuahua! After he was neutered, he stayed closer to home, although he still fought off advances from neighborhood cats, and even an owl!. As he got older, he developed diabetes, and problems with his vision secondary to the diabetes, and now lives the comfortable life of an indoor cat, getting cuddles and love.

Batman has had lots of challenges with his diabetes, like many diabetic cats, we have struggled to regulate his insulin levels, and have tried a variety of techniques to control his disease. We eventually settled on a combination of insulins which has finally seemed to do the trick. Congratulations, Batman, on being selected POTM!

Meet Ra, our March Pet of the Month. Ra is a 6 year old BIG male Cane Corso. He is the descendant of champions. His owner, who is a former law enforcement officer, originally obtained Ra to be a protector of his family while he was away and Ra fulfills that mission, but as you can see, he is also a big love. He enjoys long walks, playing with the kids in the irrigation, and challenging the neighbor’s bull if he gets a chance.

So why is Ra our Pet of the Month? He presented because he was dripping blood from his p***s. Examination revealed that his prostate gland was enlarged and painful and he was diagnosed with prostatitis. Antibiotics were prescribed and neutering was recommended. The owners had originally intended to breed Ra because of his champion blood lines, but when it was recommended that he be neutered to treat his disease, they did not hesitate. The surgery was performed, and Ra is now doing well. We selected him as our POTM not only because he is such a beautiful dog, but also because he demonstrates that neutering, even at an older age, has some rather dramatic health benefits. These benefits, though profound for male dogs, are even more important for females. Early spaying of female dogs can virtually eliminate the likelihood of their developing breast cancer later in life. Congratulations Ra! We’re glad you’re feeling better.

Our pet of the month for February is LB!
Meet LB, our February Pet of the Month! LB (short for Little Black) is an aged Cocker Spaniel who presented to us because he was drinking more water than he should. Except for significant periodontal disease, he was otherwise doing well. Laboratory evaluation showed that his kidneys were not working as well as they should have been. We hospitalized LB for treatment for his kidneys, but he was having none of it! He pulled his IV out multiple times and we eventually decided that it would be best to treat him at home. LB’s owner gave him fluids at home for a couple of weeks and his kidneys improved somewhat. But there was still his teeth. We anesthetized him and he had to have several teeth extracted. This set his kidneys back some and for a few days, he wasn’t feeling good at all. He eventually rallied and is now feeling pretty good.

So what can we learn from LB? First, is the value of lab work in the diagnosis and management of sick pets. Without the blood tests, we wouldn’t have known about his problems. Second, is that even though LB had some issues with his kidneys, we still were able to anesthetize him and help him with his serious dental problems. Even though it set him back some, in the long run, it has helped to make him more comfortable and to eat better. Many of us are reluctant to anesthetize or do surgery on older pets, and this is understandable, but LB is proof that anesthesia and surgery can be beneficial for older and even sick dogs. Congratulations, LB. We’re glad you’re feeling better.

A heartworm positive dog came into the clinic today. If you watch the video carefully you can see the baby heartworms moving around.
So what is heartworm?? Heartworm disease is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets, mainly dogs, cats, and ferrets. The worms are called “heartworms” because the adults live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of an infected animal. Heartworm can be transmitted from an infected mosquito.
When going into your vet ask about heartworm prevention today! It will cost less money to treat your pet over it’s whole life with prevention versus having to get your pet treated for the disease. Have questions? Give us a call!

This poor kitty has seen multiple vets for an “ear infection” and was treated with multiple antibiotics and treatments. The polyp in his ear canal was obvious, but never addressed. This simple procedure should relieve his discomfort and cure his problem. Warning: this is a slightly graphic video.

Meet Bella our December pet of the month!
https://petrepairaz.com/
This month is a special month for Bella. It is her one year anniversary of her diagnosis with lymphoma. Lymphoma is a common form of cancer in both dogs and cats. Like most dogs with lymphoma, Bella presented with a swelling of her lymph nodes. Diagnosis of lymphoma requires biopsy of the affected area and blood tests; sometimes other tests such as abdominal ultrasound are required as well. Bella has been treated for her cancer with a variety of chemotherapy drugs and has done very well. Like many dogs treated with chemotherapy, Bella has had few complications. The potential for problems is real: 15% of dogs being treated with chemotherapy will have problems severe enough to require hospitalization, but most dogs don’t have major complications. Unlike people, dogs generally don’t lose their hair with chemotherapy. The most common complications are vomiting and diarrhea. Bella has had a treatment every three weeks for the past year. She is continuing to do well. At the one year mark with lymphoma, we like to give owners the option of continuing treatment or stopping. Bella’s owners have elected to discontinue her treatment. We hope that she continues to do well, but there is a small chance that her cancer will come back. Happy anniversary Bella!

This little rottie puppy was diagnosed today with hydrocephalus. If you look at the ultrasound we did today the white parts are the brain and the black in the middle is fluid. Hydrocephalus is where there is an excess of cerebrospinal fluid that has leaked inside the dog's skull. This causes brain swelling and is often referred to as water on the brain. Increased pressure in the skull will press on the brain tissues and can lead to permanent brain damage. He will just need extra care though out his life.
He is the sweetest baby you’ll ever meet🤍🎃👻🖤
