Defenders of Animals at Risk (DAR) Foundation is a 100% volunteer ran non-profit dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned, mistreated, and neglected animals in Mexico. We are the U.S.-based sister organization of Fundación DAR, a cat and dog shelter located in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico. DAR Foundation helps raise awareness about the plight of neglected animals in

Mexico, while also providing funding from U.S. All donations collected through us go to Fundación DAR to keep their shelter of 50+ animals running. It also helps cover abused animal’s medical costs, animal welfare education efforts, low-cost vaccination and sterilization clinics for the public, and covers the cost of flying dogs to the U.S.

We found this little kitten at a gas station, very sick and malnourished. We are already providing him with medical care, but despite our best efforts, his temperature is still very low, and he is very dehydrated. We sincerely hope he recovers, and we will keep you updated on his health. 🙏💔

DAR Foundation also helps community dogs that are already adults and live in a specific area. Sadly, we are unable to shelter all the animals who need our help; we are overcrowded, and sometimes, the only option is to provide medical care, sterilize them, and return them to the area where they live.

Fortunately, some of the kind neighbors help feed them and monitor their health. Such is the case of Choco and Flor, who were sterilized and returned to their living area. We will continue to keep an eye on their health. 🙂

New Puppy ❤
This little one-month-old puppy was found abandoned in a park, shivering from the cold and crying. Puppies this young need their mother's body heat, but we couldn't find her mother, so we made a small blanket to keep her warm. Now, she sleeps cuddled up to a stuffed dog. Next, she will be dewormed and vaccinated so we can integrate her with other puppies, which will happen in the coming weeks. 🙂

UPDATE ON SAM ❤
Sam is improving every day. A few weeks ago, he still looked very sick, but fortunately, he is healing and gaining weight.
Sam is a wise, older dog who is very loving and obedient. He is a big boy, quite large in stature, and combined with his age, it is difficult to find a permanent home for him. However, we are optimistic and believe we will find his ideal home. 🙂🙏

New Kitten 🐱
We rescued this tiny kitten when it was being chased by several dogs. At just two months old, he was healthy but a little scared. As you can see in the photos, it took only a few minutes with us for him to feel comfortable and relaxed. 😄

We will begin his health protocol to integrate him with the other cats at the shelter. Can you help us find this adorable little guy a loving home?

Weimaraner Dog
Sadly, being a purebred dog does not guarantee mistreatment or even abandonment. Unfortunately, this is the case with this kind and gentle dog, who suffered under terrible conditions.
The wounds on his body are healing, thankfully, and we are addressing his malnutrition. He is very patient and calm and responds well to medical care, so he will heal very soon. Due to his size, our priority is finding a temporary home to care for him—we are currently overcrowded and do not have kennels for such a large dog.

These cute little girls were discovered in a plastic bag in a trash container. It enrages us that some people abandon helpless living beings like this. Fortunately, these adorable puppies are now with us but they still don’t have names!

W***Y & WONKA
A few weeks ago, two elderly dogs arrived with us, unfortunately appearing to have been abandoned. We have been waiting to see if their family comes to look for them, but that hasn’t happened.

Sadly, as animals get old or sick, some people cast them aside. We don’t understand how someone can abandon them after having lived together for many years, especially when they need care the most. Now, they are receiving medical attention and will soon be ready for adoption.

This month, we are conducting low-cost, subsidized sterilizations for dogs and cats at our facilities. Mexico is battling with some of the highest numbers of stray dogs and cats in Latin America; however, sterilization costs are high, and not everyone can afford them. Fortunately, we have made agreements with several veterinarians who will help us perform the surgeries for just $25 USD.

However, many pet owners still lack the financial resources to spay or neuter their pets, even at this low price. We are asking our Facebook followers for donations to help us sterilize dogs and cats in rural communities struggling with poverty.

UPDATE ON CONAN 💔
A year ago, Conan came to us, and during this time we have provided him with medical care and a lot of love. However, his health continues to deteriorate. He lived for years tied to a tree next to a river, without enough food and water, and all of this has left its marks on his body. Sadly, we cannot do much more for him. We know it’s just a matter of days before we have to say goodbye, and we are truly heartbroken. 😔

Conan, we will hug you a lot in these days, and you will get to go for walks in the sun like you love. We love you so much. 🙏❤

ODIN
Odin is a lovely community dog who lives in a residential area. Still, his neighbors insist he be relocated simply because he is a street dog.

Sadly, many people are intolerant of street dogs, even when they are calm and friendly. Many people don’t understand that we can all coexist and that these dogs just want kindness and a bit of food.

Unfortunately, Odin was attacked a few days ago, so we have brought him in, and he will stay with us until we find a good home for him. We’ve decided to offer him shelter, as people have threatened to harm him if he isn’t relocated.

MISHI
Mishi has arrived at our shelter. She is an adult cat who faithfully waited for her owner’s return for several months. Even though her owner had passed away, she continued to wait inside the house. Her neighbors tried to catch her, but she always ran away, determined to wait for her human friend to come back. Eventually, she became ill and weak; so we were finally able to catch her.

We are taking care of her as best as we can, although she also looks very sad. It is clear she misses her owner terribly. With love and attention, we hope she will recover soon, and that we can find a new home for her. ❤

SIMBA
Have you ever seen such a happy face? This is Simba. Simba’s story is one of hope and success, as he had been badly injured and paralyzed when he came to us, but the dedicated team at DAR never gave up hope for him.

He arrived at our shelter a year ago, and after much care and attention, we are happy to report that he has now been adopted. He continues to visit us for his rehabilitation therapy, and Simba can now move his legs and take a few steps, although he still uses a support cart for his daily walks.

LO**TA
Not long ago, we found a puppy who had been hit by a car. Her front leg had several fractures and torn ligaments. Unfortunately, the prognosis for her recovery wasn’t positive as the nerves were also damaged, and we were not able to save her leg. 😔

She is now doing great, and recovering after surgery. She is a very loving and playful puppy, and despite only having three legs, she has no trouble getting around. We hope Lo**ta can now enjoy a long and happy life. 🥰

At the shelter, we have several three-legged dogs, and we know it’s more challenging to find homes for them. However, we remain hopeful that we will soon find a forever home for Lo**ta.

SAM
We found an elderly dog who was very injured. It seemed he hadn’t received any help for several weeks; he looked in pain, hungry, and thirsty. His body was covered in infected wounds, and he couldn’t stand up.

Fortunately, we were able to intervene in time, and he is now receiving treatment and medication. We believe he will heal, as has a strong will to live. 🙏

It’s not easy to find homes for elderly dogs, but we are confident that there is a family looking for a loving and calm dog who can be happy even in the last stage of his life. ❤

This is what mornings look like at the shelter! After giving them breakfast and cleaning the kennel areas, the dogs at the DAR shelter can enjoy the sun; now that the rain has stopped. It’s a great opportunity for them to run and play! 🙂

While they are waiting to find their forever home, our goal is to make their days as fun-filled as possible. Nothing can replace the love and companionship of a permanent home, but the DAR shelter does everything we can to provide a safe, healthy environment in the meantime. ❤

CHAMPION
We don’t always manage to arrive in time to help an injured animal, as was the case with this little dog we were reported to have been hit by a car. Unfortunately, he had severe internal injuries and it was no longer possible to save him. 😔

The only thing we could do was hold him and let him go peacefully, free from pain. We named you Champion and we will always remember you. ❤

TAMY A few days ago, we found this puppy among the bushes in a fenced-off area. We believe someone must have thrown her there since there’s no way to get in. We could hear her crying but couldn’t find her until, after hours of searching, we finally located her. She was 2 weeks old and had just opened her eyes. She was crying from the cold and hunger. Fortunately, she is healthy and we are giving her the care she needs. We named her Tamy, and we know there’s a home waiting for her very soon!
