Oncology spotlight!
Sunny is the cutest boy with a very aggressive cancer called hemangiosarcoma. We classically see this type of cancer in the spleen of dogs, but Sunny’s primary tumor is invading his heart, another unfortunate but classic location.
Sunny wasn’t responding as well as we had hoped with the gold standard protocol, doxorubicin, so we decided to add a couple more agents to his regimen to help battle his cancer!
Sunny still comes in to see us (and get some chemo infused) every three weeks, but at home he receives an oral chemotherapy agent called Cytoxan along with a heart medication called Propranolol, which is actually being used to help the doxorubicin work even better!
Sunny likes to make sure he helps his technician, Maggie, check his blood before chemotherapy. But once that infusion starts, he takes a nice nap with his other technician, Suzie.

Ever wondered what a day in the life of an oncology patient is like? Look no further and meet the team behind your furry baby's care!
"Hi! My name is Casie and I have been with VCA ARECA Oncology since 2022 and have been in the veterinary field since 2006. I really love working in oncology and am grateful we can give you and your fur baby more time together. I live with my husband and 4-year-old son. In our free time, we love to travel and explore new places."
"Hi! My name is Maggie, and I’ve been an oncology technician since 2005. What I love most about oncology is meeting all my families and being able to love on all of my patients as if they were my own fur babies. I live with my husband and 4 fur-pup babies of my own. In my off time I love to go camping with my pups, off-roading, and, hang out with my family."
"Hi! My name is Suzie. I have been a veterinary nurse for ten years, eight of those were in the ICU. I joined Oncology in 2023 and love learning how to treat cancer. I knew I wanted to work with animals since a very young age and I am grateful to be in a career I am passionate about. Helping people and their pets however I can is such an honor."
"Hi! My name is Maria. I joined the oncology team just over one year ago. I have been a veterinary technician for 8 years, previously coming from the field of neurology. I chose this field based on my passion for helping animals. My goal is to ensure every pet receives the best quality care.
"Hi! My name is Alyssa Strumpf, and I am your medical oncologist! I have been working in the field of veterinary medicine for 10 years now and joined VCA ARECA a year ago. Oncology is a fascinating field with ever growing new treatments and a constant connection to our human counterparts. I especially cherish the bond I get to develop with my patients and their parents, alike. You will often see a chocolate Labrador make appearances in our posts, Lucky, who has been by my side through it all!

Charlie's Cancer Journey. ❤️
Meet Charlie. Such a wonderful old soul who decided not to get one or two tumors but instead five tumors and some bladder stones. Fortunately for Charlie, three of his tumors came back as benign growths. The other two tumors, while malignant in nature, have a good chance of progressing slowly and not necessitating any chemotherapy right now.
Charlie is really looking forward to not having to wear his cone of shame and getting back to sunbathing in the Arizona heat!
Charlie’s tumors include:
A benign eyelid mass called a meibomian adenoma.
A benign parathyroid gland mass called a parathyroid adenoma.
A thyroid carcinoma, a malignant cancer that invades the thyroid gland.
A splenic mass, which was hyperplastic (overgrowth).
An anal sac mass called apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma or AGASACA for short, a malignant cancer of the anal sac.
Smooshed dog breeds have it ruff in the warmer months.
Our short snouted boy Piney is here with Sarah to give you some tips to help your Brachycephalic (Squished Face) friends have fun in the sun and prevent heatstroke this summer
