A growing concern I have is seeing groomers post or advertise examples of challenging pet behavior in their shops, often presenting it as if it’s typical or acceptable. Instead, let’s work to normalize positive behavioral adjustments and emphasize compassionate care for both our clients and their pets.

For instance, did you know that petting a dog’s chest is a gesture of respect, while petting the top of their head can be interpreted as a sign of dominance? Small, thoughtful actions like these can make a big difference in creating a more trusting and calm experience for the animals.

There’s a lot of debate in the grooming world about shaving double-coated dogs (those that shed). In the past, I shared the differences between double- and single-coated breeds, but my focus is on informing, not lecturing. You know your pets best, and I’m here to support what makes them happy and comfortable, while providing quality care.

Josie, a senior Aussie with a thick undercoat, typically gets seasonal shave-downs. This fall, we decided to keep her coat a bit longer for the colder months, which can lead to a slightly less smooth finish compared to a close shave. To keep her coat looking its best, we did a full deshed and blowout before her trim. I also recommended in-between baths and deshed sessions to maintain her coat’s health and make future grooming even smoother.

Josie looks fantastic, growing out beautifully, and is still as joyful as ever—just in time for Senior Dog Month!

🐾 November is Senior Pet Month! 🐾

This month, is all about celebrating senior pets and raising awareness about adopting older animals who need loving homes. Senior pets make wonderful companions with so much love to give! 🐶🐱

It’s also a time to focus on their care. Here are some tips:
• Wellness exams twice a year 🩺
• Baseline bloodwork & x-rays 📋
• Watch for signs of aging like cloudy eyes or decreased mobility 👀
• Keep nails trimmed & teeth clean for their comfort and health 🦷✂️
• Make food & water easy to reach 🍲
• Notice behavioral changes that could indicate discomfort 🐾

A dog's age at which it's considered a senior depends on its breed and size:
Small breeds: Around 10–12 years old
Medium breeds: Around 8–9 years old
Large and giant breeds: Around 6–7 years old
