Meet Antonio, a 13-year-old Bengal mix, who was diagnosed with gastrointestinal tract lymphoma by Dr. Mia Livaccari at MedVet New Orleans. Signs for this condition typically include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and often either a decreased or increased appetite.

Antonio recently completed a chemotherapy protocol as part of his treatment plan, and we're delighted to share he is now in remission! Antonio was surrounded by the team at MedVet New Orleans and his pet family to celebrate his chemotherapy graduation 🎓. Antonio’s mom, who’s also a fellow cancer survivor, rang the celebration bell, too (a special moment that she was not able to do in previous years due to COVID’s limitations).

We are so happy for Antonio and his loving family! 👏

Experiencing a lack of appetite and lethargy, Rocko was brought to the Internal Medicine department at MedVet New Orleans for evaluation. Unfortunately, X-rays revealed an esophageal foreign body and after taking a further look with an endoscopy (scope), we confirmed a lodged piece of a ham bone in his esophagus!

Good news: the ham bone was successfully removed using a loop instrument to wrap around the ham bone. We sent Rocko home the same day with esophagus-coating medications and antacids to help soothe and heal his esophagus.

Rocko's family shared that he is doing well at home, sans ham bone 🦴

Meet Lola, a 3-year-old Pitbull mix, who was referred to the ER department at MedVet New Orleans for acetaminophen toxicity. After a thorough examination by Dr. Julia Fincher, Lola was transferred to Dr. Jennifer Daly in critical care for further support as part of MedVet's collaborative care approach. After a dialysis catheter was placed, hemoperfusion was performed with an aimalojic carbon filter (to safely remove all toxins) followed by monitoring of Lola's liver values post-treatment.

Thank you to Lola's pet family for trusting us with her emergency care; we're happy to share Lola is back to being a happy and healthy pup! 💙

⚠️ Important safety reminder to all pet owners: do not administer human medications to pets and keep medications out of your pet's reach. Medications often have a coating to make them taste better to us that often leads to pets overdosing if accidentally ingested. Arthritis can cause discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility in pets, impacting their overall quality of life. Signs of arthritis in pets are similar to what we experience as humans and can include posture changes, difficulty walking, and reluctance to play.

Dr. Danny Sack from MedVet Columbus gives us a few tips for pet owners managing arthritis in their pet, and when to see a veterinarian for further help.

Some steps you can take to help your pet with osteoarthritis:

#1 – Maintain a lean body weight
#2 – Consistent low-level activity

Today, on Melanoma Monday, we join the efforts to raise awareness about the signs of this dangerous cancer in pets.

Malignant melanomas often manifest in areas like the lips, mouth, eyes, or nail beds, but with early detection and treatment, there is a high chance of successful outcomes.

If you notice any signs of melanoma in your pet, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance and consider requesting a referral to a Veterinary Oncologist.

MedVet Oncology treats several types of cancers, including melanoma. For a list of MedVet Oncology locations, visit:

Lily toxicity is more common in warmer months, particularly for cats. Some types of lilies will cause local irritation to the mouth while others can cause kidney failure.

If your cat has eaten a lily, take them and the plant to your veterinarian, or a pet ER like MedVet, to help determine the best course of action and start immediate treatment if needed.
